The media.....the media.....the media.....the media
Say it until you understand it. The media can spin any story it likes in the direction that it wants. They can make any story as big or as small as they wish. They can make some scandals and let them disappear. They can take some things that should disappear and make them scandals. They are fair and balanced. They can report both sides of the story and make one look good and one look evil. They are deceitful scoundrels.

1. or they can report a story...
...that DOES have a good side and an evil side as if both sides are moral equals and there is no truth. That is what they do all the time.

7. Exactly.
If one person is telling the truth and one person is telling a lie, the truth DOES NOT lie somewhere in the middle.

But the corporate media gives merit to lies to make it look that way.

2. I like their montages...
Various groups with signs could be anywhere anyone, cut to angry "dictator" who could be talking about anything.
Perception management with visuals. Bleh!

4. Just watched CNN equating the Swift Boaters to NAACP (add against * in 2000
for being against hate crime legislation). They said NAACP "crossed the line" - which - I don't know - as the facts were true.
Then they equated the NYC firefighters attacking Rudy for lack of radios on 9.11 to the Swift Boaters. They showed some obscure internet page with the title "Urban legends" then they LIED the 9.11 commission debunked this by saying "lack of radios wasn;t the sole cause of the deaths" (no shit sherlock, there was also fire and buildings falling!). then they praised Rudy for responding faster and better than Kerry to the attack....My head started hurting so I tuned off (I had watched the GOP debate - otherwise I am NEVER on that channel)

5. K&R - the media is, in my view, the single biggest problem in the US today.
If the media simply reported the TRUTH, the citizens would in the streets with torches and pitchforks.

Instead we get fallacious moral equivalences set up as 'debate' and people yelling at each other with volume declared as truth.

I pine for Walter Cronkite and the CBS of old.

6. It's worse than that...
If they did absolutely nothing, reported on absolutely nothing, commented on absolutely nothing -- the level of public awareness would be so much higher that this country would be unrecognizable. People are generally curious and, absent being told which stories matter and what to think about them by these self-anointed sages of popular opinion, they'd have to seek out information on their own.

Inevitably, a fair percentage would choose to find their news on the internet, which is -- as we all know -- a parallel universe. News from the UK, continental Europe, Southeast and South Asia, commentary by actual journalists, op/eds by people with actual opinions worth sharing, bloggers from around the world...

If US mass media simply didn't exist, or only ran game shows or dog races or anything but the swill they now show that passes as information, the US would begin to have to think for itself. The results could be astonishing.

Of course, given the amazing numbers of pure dumbshits running around masquerading as humans in this country, maybe it's beyond even the internet's power to fix. I'd sure like to give it a try, though.

8. Do you remember that it was Cronkite that warned Richard S. Salant
that tracking ratings and requiring the news departments to turn a profit would be the end of news reporting on television? Dead on right again.

Now he lives in The Boulders outside Carefree, AZ and plays golf.

Damn.
