Man who spit on dying immigrant convicted of his murder
By adamg - Mon, 11/26/2007 - 4:41pm.

Roberto Mulero, 23, faces life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years, following his conviction today on second-degree murder charges.

Mulero had been charged with first-degree murder for the Dec. 18, 2006 death of Dakermu "Eugene" Kollie at Mulero's home in Mattapan. Kollie was a Liberian immigrant living in Salem.

According to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office, Mulero ended a fight between Kollie and some other people at a party by plunging a combat knife into Kollie:

In the aftermath of the fight, witnesses testified, Mulero smoked a cigarette in the dying man's presence, at one point spitting on him as he was lying on the floor. Boston Police criminalists testified that Mulero's DNA was found in a spot of saliva found on Kollie's jacket.

1. That's kind of a misleading title.
It makes you think that the spitting is why he was convicted of murder. It had more to do with the fact he stabbed the guy to death.

3. Yeah, but that's not a snappy headline. Seriously, which is more grabbing?
"Man who stabbed victim convicted of murder"

or

"Man who spit on dying immigrant convicted of his murder"

It's a no brainer. Quite literally.
