I am against the death penalty ... but, in this case
Edited on Tue Nov-27-07 12:41 AM by sjdnb
only because it would be over too quickly for the evil that is Lori Drew. An adult woman, who, on hehalf of her daughter, who had a 'spat' with Megan, drove another child, Megan Meier, to her death.

Read more about it here http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/2007/11/blog-readers-ou.html

These people (Megan's parents) have to be saints to have only smashed and burned a game table in these people's driveway. May they find peace, comfort, and solace.

Hopefully, society (us), can help them find justice.

1. So, you aren't against the death penalty.
Based on your own words. An exception means you aren't totally against it.

8. And who are you to decide?
You have to separate your personal feelings from what's best for a rational, civilized society.

12. Deserves death? I daresay she does! Many live that deserve death. And some die that deserve

life. Can you give that to them? Then be not too eager to deal out death in the name of justice. Even the wise cannot see all ends.

13. I have no sympathy what so ever for those who murder an innocent human life
Edited on Thu Nov-29-07 04:09 AM by CRF450
If it was cold blooded murder, I support the death penalty, and they can burn in hell for eternity. No if, ands, or buts from me.

16. I'm WAY smarter than YOU. I'm smarter than just about everyone I've ever met...
...and I'm smart enough to know that I am -not- smart enough
to play G*D with another human being's LIFE.

"JUDGE NOT, LEST YE BE JUDGED" ring a bell much?

4. Get the bigger pic eh?

OK, so maybe I could have phrased it better, but the fact is, if ever I thought there was a reason to get so mad at someone you'd be ready to kill them, this would be it.

If anyone preyed upon any one of my children, like this woman did, for such a ridiculously juvenile reason (i.e., her kid had a falling out with my kid) AND she chose to respond by driving my child to his/her death), I'd want that person brought to justice - my kind of justice. (Sorry, my motherhood instincts trump my political correctness)

But, for me, the best punishment would be for this/these people to be economically and socially destroyed for the rest of his/her/their natural lives. They'd be taunted and reminded, daily, of their crimes, remaining ostracized from any level of normal society, forever.

But, if that didn't happen I'd be ok with them vanishing from the face of the earth.

So, yeah, maybe when it comes to my kids, I'd be ready and willing to go "eye for an eye".

My guess is you don't have kids.

5. Kindly...
...don't presume to know anything about me based on my stances. Whether I do or don't have children is of no consequence to this conversation.

There are many on this board that are parents and also against the death penalty.
Your presumptions are nothing more than assumptions, based on your own beliefs.
Nothing more or less.

If you want to know something about someone, ask. Don't assume. It's rude to assume.

6. I'll say this again....
...for your benefit.

Kindly don't assume things about people based on your own beliefs, assumptions and values. Whether or not I have children is not the issue here.

If you can make "exceptions" regarding something, you don't believe in it unequivocably.

Your response seems a passive-aggressive attempt at baiting. Given your rude response, and general stance in this thread welcome to my ignore list.

2. Same here, when I first read about this story
Edited on Tue Nov-27-07 12:49 AM by Mr_Monday
I was astonished by Megan's parents calm reaction to the news that their close friends' involvement in the death of Megan Meiers. Bullied by her ex-friend's crazy mother. Seriously, what is wrong with that woman? Was she not mature enough to rise above her daughter's friendship troubles?

15. It kills me that so many people comment upon many different threads...
that characterize some horrible crime. I have seen hundreds of them. There are always a few posters in those threads that make the claim that "I am against the death penalty, but in this case...."

You either are for or against the death penalty. There is just no gray area. There are crimes that just make me sick to my stomach, especially those that are committed against children. I would like to personally get them alone in a room somewhere myself.

However, we either collectively as progressives decide one way or the other. Regardless of the heinousness of the crime.

I am against the death penalty in all cases. However that doesn't mean I don't want to kick someone's ass badly.

I would think life with no possibility of parole would be the best situation.

"I'm not racist, but..."

"I don't hate Mormons, but..."

When I hear the word "but" in such a statement, I know I'm being lied to.

Linguistics should seriously be taught as a requirement in high school.

20. As a pro-death penalty advocate, I don't support it in this case.

The Drew, her family, and friends were cruel and manipulative, and I hope there is some criminal charge and conviction in their future, but not the death penalty. Megan was a fragile young person, and yes they knew that and acted negligently, but she took her own life.
