A FReeper Thanksgiving: They react to news that Food Banks are desperately short this year.
We hear all the time about how conservatives are so very compassionate, and that private donations will make up for cutting all those nasty government "handouts" to people in need. OK, so the private Food Banks are apparently short this year, and the FReepers react with all the warmth and charity we have come to expect. Here's three samples of way more than 100, just to give you the picture. They're almost all like this. And I hope your Thanksgiving is just as predictable, in a better way. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1929296/posts

I'd be thrilled to be charitable (as in days of yore) IF the government would quit robbing me, forcing me to pay for non-working leeches.

And each year the govt does nothing to control our borders. Get used to it, all charities are being stretched due to the influx of illegals.
Excellent point. Ten million alien moochers living off the fat of the land does make a difference doesn't it.

1. So, they're both stealing their jobs AND existing on charity...
Freepers are more talented than I imagined, able to hold two conflicting (and ridiculous) thoughts in their tiny little minds at the same time.

Fucking pinheads.

4. My sister feels the same way
Bear in mind, of course, that she got the money from 1/2 of my mother's estate when she died and used it to pay cash for a home in Colorado Springs. She didn't work for it, she never had a single mortgage payment, but she does sit on the throne of judgment when it comes to everyone else.

She wanted to move to Colorado Springs because somehow, on previous visits to her daughter, she came under the impression that "everyone there was white."

The minute she moved into her new home she started complaining about how many Mexicans were in Colorado Springs.

We haven't spoken for 4 and a half years...since the day the attorney for my mom's estate mailed her the cashier's check.

Cha-CHING.

8. I hate the fact that I haven't spoken to my sister in years...
...and probably never will again.

Yes, while she still lived in California, I had to sit and listen to her clueless racist crap, and yes, I could have challenged it, but as John Bradford said,

There But For the Grace of God Go I.

It's one thing when you're hearing this shit from some inbred redneck on FreeRepublic. It's another when you're hearing it from a sister you loved as a kid, who was everything a sister could and should be, who changed over the years into someone I can no longer recognize.

10. I have an aunt like that.
She hates Middle Easterners and constantly uses racist rhetoric to describe them. It pisses me off and one year we ruined Thanksgiving because we got into a shouting match. Everyone left and didn't talk for like a year. Now I just bite my tongue when I hear it, because I don't want to start anything.

13. And that's the key to it all.
Edited on Thu Nov-22-07 04:11 PM by Amerigo Vespucci
I bit my tongue too, but it's not because I was apathetic or agreed with her or anything like that.

It's because she was so firmly entrenched in her ideas that unless you had a lot of time to waste on your hands, there was no chance of getting her to see the world outside of Fox News (which she kept on the TV all day long, just like the White House).

She also purchased a set of tapes from Bill O'Reilly's Web Site and raved about how wonderful he was and how he's one of the few people who "gets it."

So all I can say on this day of thanks is thank God for free will, and that I accept everyone for who they are and who they want to be and not what I "expect" them to be.

Edited on Thu Nov-22-07 07:57 PM by Amerigo Vespucci
Don't ask me to explain that...I can't.

She got a free HOUSE in Colarado Springs, and upon close of escrow sent an email to my OTHER sister in Nevada saying I "ripped her off"...

which is 100% IMPOSSIBLE under California Probate Law, among the toughest in the U.S.A....

I'd give every fucking penny I was given BACK to have my mother BACK.

My sister got a FREE HOUSE and wants MORE.

That's it, in a nutshell.

Feels entitlement is due to her all the time. :eyes: She is a goofball, but I love her anyway. We Never discuss politics, NEVER. It seems to be the answer for us, it's working very well.
Just got home from Thanksgiving at her place tonight, it was a great turn out.

I'm very sorry about the loss of your Mom. I still have mine, but she is quite poor, hence, my rightwing sister will have nothing to bitch about when it comes to property distribution. :P (I know that's my Mom and Dads plan, leave nothing behind to split the family, they had 9 kids)

15. There are so many times I am so glad I am not like them...
Edited on Thu Nov-22-07 04:14 PM by rasputin1952
Over the years, fat and lean, i have always found ways to do something over the holidays. I have worked the food line at the Salvation Army, and cheerily washed dishes, pots & pans as the day wore on. I took the time to talk to the little ones, and hopefully made a difference in how the adults looked at life.

I know that so many things are beyond our control, people get slapped down, and most merely need a good pair of ears to listen to them as they work through things, a helping hand and a smile...so they know they won't get kicked by you when their down.

I do believe that everyone on this planet should go hungry, not of their own volition, but because they have had something "bad" happen to them, like breaking down in the desert on a Thanksgiving Day when no one will be on the route for a couple of days. I don't wish to see anyone harmed, but sometimes, when you are out there and realize that may be a LONG time before you can get help, and you are so spoiled you have no idea how to help yourself, there might just be a manifestation, not an epiphany, but a notion that things can co terribly wrong.

So sitting there, with a wallet full of credit cards and cash, a cell phone w/a dead battery or no towers to pick up your call, and a couple of sunrises and sunsets under your belt, the idea may come around that "shit happens" to everyone. A car comes up on the horizon, a horizon so distant it takes a half an hour for the car to get near you, and you feel the joy of rescue, only to have the car whisk by you, with people, exactly like you, shaking their heads wondering "how you could be so lousy as to break down"...and the dream of salvation rolls down the highway with the car filled w/snobs.

The only one who stops and offers aid, is the grizzled old Desert Rat,the one that gets you on your way, asking for nothing in return and offers you something to eat and drink from his own meager victuals. I've been there, I was he Desert Rat, and I just hope that couple helped someone else further down on the road the have decided to travel.

32. You are SO right rasputin 1952. I had an experience like that
about 7 years ago. This may be rambling, but it is an amazing story because it is true, it happened to me & I was the prissy spoiled ditzy blonde with the preconceived notions in the story.
I was a stay home Mom when * was elected (I despised * & Poopy before him) & the minute he stole office, my husband who had a very good job as an environmental engineer with a global company, was laid off. So I went out & got a job. We were transplanted Midwesterners in the Deep South and we loved it here, but as with any cultural change, we were still adjusting to the people & customs.
It being a new job and the boss a stickler for promptness, is where the miracle happened. I was driving my beloved 1968 Buick Riviera to work (yes I am rather eccentric) and I was on the ramp heading to I-65 on the way to work. As I accelerated, there was a tremendous BANG! from under the hood and I immediately pulled over & stopped to the side at the end of the ramp. Figuring it to be serious and noticing a significant DENT in the hood from underneath, I did not even bother opening it up. Not owning a cell phone, I trotted over to a convenient nearby construction site, borrowed a phone and called husband, who said he would be there as soon as he could get 5 year old daughter dressed.
As I was waiting, along came a little, beat-up pickup truck that pulled over behind my car, and out came two men striding toward me. They were the most tattooed, long greasy blond haired, FILTHIEST pair of SWAMP RATS (no disrespect intended) you could ever imagine. They asked me what was wrong and I pointed to my car and described what had happened. They asked if they could check it out (they thought the car was cool) and I demurred, saying my husband would be here shortly and would take care of it. They kept cheerfully and politely insisting so I said go ahead whatever, thinking husband will be here soon and they would go away. They gleefully popped the hood and quickly discerned that a blade from the fan had SHEARED OFF from metal fatigue and had flown violently enough to dent the Sherman Tank Steel of the hood. They quickly checked all the hoses and belts to make sure of no further damage.
Meanwhile husband and daughter showed up. The two swamp rats (what I called them in my mind) said they owned a parts junkyard and could get me a new fan in TEN MINUTES and would come back and be happy to install it. No charge. Husband & I consulted, both in a state of consternation, thinking these guys are nuts, maybe they will go away if we agree, so we agreed & they did.
THEY CAME BACK, on schedule, did the repairs & I was only 45 minutes late with an explanation that didn't bother the boss. Husband gave them $20 which they did not want to take. Come to find out, they had spent the last month working a shrimp boat and were on their way home, but decided to stop and help anyway.

is so hard to do without blathering on forever, but apparently I needed to share on this Thanksgiving Eve, so thanks for your reply & the best to you for the holidays! On further thought, maybe some more stories of random acts of kindness would be wonderful to share - may be a thread just devoted to that? Hmmmmm...

45. "Random acts of Kindness" reminds me of the time
me and hubby were driving on a backroad and came upon a truck on the side of the road, with what appeared to be an elderly gent crawled half under it. We stopped and called out, Do you need any help? And out crawls this bibbed overalled drop dead gorgeous blue eyed man in his prime, I do not recall exactly what his response was, but he did not need help that day, I just remember those eyes and that face. Still drooling.
Happy Holidays to you and yours also!

21. A true and timely story for you...
...I am a Christian, by the way, but I don't bludgeon every man, woman and child I meet with the fact. It's my life, my choice, and it works for me.

I am self-employed, a "sole proprietor"...My business is "strategic marketing services," including Web Site design, etc.

I have a client who tells me in AT LEAST every third conversation, "As you know, I'm a Christian..."

ALL of my OTHER clients...EVERY single ONE of them...generally pay me IMMEDIATELY upon receipt of my invoice. I met with a new client yesterday and she had my signed contract waiting for me and ran off into the other room while saying "Oh, wait while I get your check"...

But the CHRISTIAN client...it takes a minimum of 8 to 10 requests before he pays me.

My former contact at this account became a good friend. We had a chat this morning when I contacted her to wish her a happy Thanksgiving. She brought up the "Christian" thing before I did, and said "David and his wife like to have people work for them but hate to part with their money."

So yes, let's print that full Tull quote or all to enjoy:

"If Jesus saves -- well, He'd better save Himself
from the gory glory seekers who use His name in death."

My client tosses around the "As you know, I'm a Christian" stuff until it sounds like "Woof. Woof Woof Woof, Woof. WOOF!"

It's November 22nd and I had planned on his check in order to come up with December's rent. That probably won't happen, but hey...at least he's a Christian.

20. By the way, Bush vetoed the Appropriations Bill with heating help and more.
I am sure the FReepers will rush to take up the slack. Bush vetoed the bill; the Dems couldn't override. Home heating costs - especially heating oil, which many of the poor rely on - are projected to climb as high as 25% over last year, especially in the northeast. The money simply won't be there to help them cope. But, be of good cheer - $3 billion a week will continue to go for wars, and that number can only go up, once we attack Iran in 2008.

27. Yes, the Rich taking care of the poor was always BS. But FReepers aren't rich. Just stupid.
FReepers are useful dupes. They are the kind of people who are more than happy to see Medicare, Medicaid and other benefits cut, until it comes to care for their parents or all of a sudden they face bankruptcy because of unanticipated medical emergency bills, and they find that bankruptcy is no longer an option because of George W. Bush and his allies.

Their pensions may be taken, their Medicare may go, but thank God for George W. Bush, who cuts taxes mostly on the wealthy and is against gay marriage and for teaching "Intelligent Design."

That's who FReepers are.

Christmas Day 2004 I was stuck with 27 F-ing turkeys and called all over trying to find someplace that’d take them. Do you think I could find anyone that’d even answer the phone?
I finally did – in deepest, darkest Oakland. It was still before 9:00am so I figured I might be able to slip in and out without being assaulted and killed.

Well I made it, but that food bank was in the *worst* neighborhood on EARTH. Hopefully someone enjoyed a turkey.

I hate to admit it because I know it’s extremely wasteful and all, but next time I’m in that position I’m going to find the nearest dumpster and in they go.

41. Indeed, absolutely vile
my Conservative Christian mom and sister used to volunteer at the local homeless shelter on Thanksgiving, but they never did during the rest of the year. It's good that they wanted to spend any time at all volunteering, but when it's done on a major holiday it does look like more of a show of generosity then actual caring (Christmas and Thanksgiving are probably the ONLY two days when most food pantries are filled and fully staffed). I'm more impressed when people choose a random weekday in the middle of July to give their time to charity.

52. It sickens me that a disgusting creep like this lives in the Bay Area.
I moved here to escape the vile FReeper town I used to live in, because it's one of the most liberal areas in the country. Thankfully, we have a fantastic Dem majority here, but I bristle at the thought of people like this polluting my Democratic oasis with their hateful, racist bilge.

Assuming he'll be assaulted and killed just for going into Oakland? What a sad, sorry idiot.

40. They claim that charity will be enough to help the poor
And then slander the poor as lazy, non-working leeches, so as to have an excuse not to give anything to charity.

They aren't even sincere in their opinions. That's why they keep conflicting.

43. You do of course understand
It's that they want to control WHO they give what charity they give, not those who may need it, but those who fit their world image. The colored, poor, ugly and of course the forgotten need not apply.

$1 trillion missing -- Bush plan targets Pentagon accounting

- Tom Abate, San Francisco Chronicle Staff Writer
Sunday, May 18, 2003

The Department of Defense, already infamous for spending $640 for a toilet seat, once again finds itself under intense scrutiny, only this time because it couldn't account for more than a trillion dollars in financial transactions, not to mention dozens of tanks, missiles and planes.

The Pentagon's unenviable reputation for waste will top the congressional agenda this week, when the House and Senate are expected to begin floor debate on a Bush administration proposal to make sweeping changes in how the Pentagon spends money, manages contracts and treats civilian employees.

The Bush proposal, called the Defense Transformation for the 21st Century Act, arrives at a time when the nonpartisan General Accounting Office has raised the volume of its perennial complaints about the financial woes at Defense, which recently failed its seventh audit in as many years.

"Overhauling DOD's financial management operations represent a challenge that goes far beyond financial accounting to the very fiber of (its) . . . business operations and culture," GAO chief David Walker told lawmakers in March.

WHAT HAPPENED TO $1 TRILLION?

Though Defense has long been notorious for waste, recent government reports suggest the Pentagon's money management woes have reached astronomical proportions. A study by the Defense Department's inspector general found that the Pentagon couldn't properly account for more than a trillion dollars in monies spent. A GAO report found Defense inventory systems so lax that the U.S.

Army lost track of 56 airplanes, 32 tanks, and 36 Javelin missile command launch-units.

47. And DUers will make fun of the people
who recognize that Thanksgiving is nothing but a piece of whitewashed history that ignores the genocide of native peoples by Europeans and mock those who worry about the treatment of turkeys in our slaughterhouses.

And DU is different from FR why?

and love in our hearts. Not out of some sense of so called nobility where we feel as good christians we should help those less fortunate then us once a year and do that good deed begrudingly then talk down about the people who we helped.

and i don't mock vegans about their beliefs. I'm sure alot of us dont. I also don't mock people who enjoy thanksgiving because i believe it is now more a holiday to be with one's family as the major point, not the end of starvation of a couple of pilgrims.

btw how is the free republic today?

Shouldn't the Freep use her seven years of generous Bush tax cuts to to "be charitable as in days of yore"?

Yeah, never mind the fact that most people already have jobs, are plowed under with medical bills, or are working-poor. According to the freepers, they should get up at 6AM, work one job, then work another, then get home at midnight for the next day. Exploitation is the way - no assistance for anyone when you can slap them.
