One thing I just don't understand...
Edited on Wed Nov-21-07 06:31 AM by William769
On the news this morning here in Florida they are reporting that the Florida legislature says there is a shortfall in Education funding and they are trying to figure out how to cut money with out doing lay offs (it's that bad?). Right now they are looking at a hiring freeze. I remember well in the 80's when they started the Florida Lottery, one way they were able to get is was that all the money raised would goto Education. Well driving through the City I live in I see all these billboards about the Florida lottery and how it has raised more than 11 billion dollars since it started. How in the hell can their be a shortfall for Education?

1. Because they did what they always do
They promised one thing and did another.

That money does not go entirely to education as they said it would. That was just an excuse to get Florida voters to approve it. It should be noted here that Democrats are as responsible as Republicans for making that happen.

This is a state without an income tax. They must squeeze funding from wherever they can get it.

2. They also fail to tell that they take away the rest of the funding, since
they have all this lottery money coming in. It's sold as "in addition to" but the reality quickly becomes "in place of"

3. I read some thing on lottery and the money once as I thought like you.
I think NH had the first one and it was for education and yet their is an endless fight for money in the state and has been for years. This item I read said it was how the bills was worded. Most education does not get the profits so the state can spend it as they like. I do not know where I read it but only a few states did it so the money HAS to go to education. It is sort of like building the ball parks for the people who of course do not make enough money to pay to go to the ball park after they are built with their tax money. I think it is because we really do not watch what is going on. As we become poorer we will be better at that. Watching our money will become a full time job. :spank: :spank: :spank:
