Topeka police on Thursday were investigating vandalism to Westboro Baptist Church, as well as the discovery outside the church of two small, homemade firecrackers.

The police bomb unit removed the firecrackers and took them away to be examined, Pankratz said. When asked whether they exploded before they were discovered, she said the state in which they were found remained under investigation.
Pankratz said nearby streets were closed off and a police dog checked the area before the streets were reopened. Officers left at about 11:30 a.m.
Westboro Baptist filed a report with police indicating graffiti had been painted on its marquee and its fence. "God hates intolerance" was twice written, as well as "God hates the Phelps."

Phelps-Roper said she was arriving home from Maryland late Thursday morning when she saw police cars in the area of the church and officers told her of the vandalism. She said the damage was only the latest among numerous acts of vandalism committed to the church's property over the past 17 years.
"We don't expect any different from a filthy nation that is about to be destroyed," Phelps-Roper said. "They hate their God and they think they can get at him by getting at us."
