Bumper Sticker Survey
Last weekend, I made a trip through 4 states (AR, MO, IL, IN) and decided to check out the bumper stickers on cars. I saw exactly two: one was an old 2004 Bush/Cheney sticker, the other was an Obama sticker. No other political stickers were seen, and we were on the road for 16 hours. In fact, in the past month I've seen 1 Fred Thompson sticker and 1 Dennis Kucinich sticker, and 1 Ron Paul hand made sign out of cardboard.

To my mind, this means that most folks really aren't paying that much attention to the candidates yet. When I start talking about politics to folks, they are polite, but frankly aren't really that interested, except for the usual political activists-and THEY don't have bumper stickers supporting any candidate yet!

So what have you noticed about bumper stickers in your area?

5. Where are you from?
Just curious. We drove through St. Louis twice (coming and going) and I didn't see ANY political bumper stickers when we breezed through at midnight and then at 3:00 pm. I found it interesting that I saw the stickers along the road in the country rather than near big cities.

2. hey aye!
I've seen a handmade Paul sign, 2 Mitt stickers, 1 Giuliani, and that's it over the past few months - of course I see the occasional Kerry/Edwards, and way too many of the B*sh/Cheney stickers - I refrain from flicking them off... but the urge is there.

7. Your location?
I'm wondering if maybe some areas of the country are more interested in what is going on politically than others.

3. I've seen a couple
of Kerry/Edwards stickers with the Kerry and the 04 ripped off. Seems to be the hip way to support Edwards around here. :)

Yup, I took a pair of scissors to a left-over Kerry-Edwards sticker. I kept the American flag, too!:kick: :kick:

On edit, here in the Austin TX area I see a couple of Hillary, a couple of Obama, one Ghouliani, a couple of Mitt, a couple of old W, but a boatload of Ron Paul. Lots of Texans support him.

8. Interesting
The first one is funny but subtle-a good one for those leery of reactions.

Have you noticed that more of your sales come from one area of the country, or are sales pretty much from all over?

seen a single sticker for ANYBODY in the 2008 election. I must note, however, that I live in a very rural area, and have not traveled outside a 35 mile radius from my home for many months.

Tomorrow, I will be venturing out a good 80 miles or so away from home to a semi-large metropolitan area (Duluth, MN) on Interstate 35. I will definitely be taking note of any bumper stickers or yard signs I may see.

(edited for spelling "bumper" as "bumber" -- which was, without doubt, a Freudian slip of some sort...)

14. When we crossed the Mississippi River
I expected to see a lot of Obama stickers, especially around East St. Louis/Belleville. The only one I did see was in that area. But I was expecting to see a lot more.

I have more than that on my own car!

Many cars in my town have multiple bumperstickers. I'm talking MANY.

endorsing a specific candidate. Oh, I saw plenty of bumper stickers, including your GOD is too BIG to fit into one religion.

13. I see quite a few "Bush-Cheney 04" and "W" every day...
My car occasionally displays my magnetic "Gore '08" sticker. Because I live in "W" country and value my personal property, I remove it when parked.

16. Smart move
Springfield MO, a town we go to to shop, has a few W stickers floating around, but not many. Odd thing is that there are no stickers for GOP candidates. I'm wondering if the fundies are going to sit out this election. Springfield is the home of a couple of religious universities and has the Assembly of God headquarters. I see more fish signs than political signs.

18. Our primary is Feb 5
instead of in May next year, so it isn't that far off. I'm surprised that I'm not seeing any bumper sticker action in Arkansas (except for the Ron Paul home made sign and the Kucinich bumper sticker, I've not seen one political sticker around here lately).

24. My son went to college in KC from 2003 to this past May, so I used to drive down there 2X a year.
During the 2004 election season, I was pleasantly surprised by all the "Kerry" lawn signs and bumper stickers that I saw in KC, on both the Kansas and Missouri sides. There were also "Bush-Cheney 04" stickers, but far fewer, and no lawn signs.

23. I still see a lot of Kerry/Edwards stickers
in my own city, Minneapolis, but last week I drove down to Des Moines and then west to central Nebraska and back, and outside the Minneapolis area I saw virtually no bumper stickers at all the whole time. I did see a Ron Paul poster along I-80 west of Des Moines, but that was it. Nothing at all in Nebraska.

25. Around Iowa
I moved to rural Iowa in July, born and raised in Des Moines, lived in Chicago burbs (7 years) and Madison, WI (1 year) in between. My town's population is 478 (according to the 2000 census) and I actually live about 5 miles out from the town center.

See no stickers out here in the boonies (unless you count my Darwin fish and DU sticker). Trick-or-treating in town I saw 3 houses with Hillary signs.

Driving through Des Moines about a month ago, I made a conscious effort to count the stickers/signs I saw. The results were....
  • Hillary: 1 yard sign
  • Edwards: 2 stickers
  • Ron Paul: 4 yard signs
  • Huckabee: 2 stickers on same vehicle (vehicle also had a Christian-themed sticker)

Also saw a couple generic democrat stickers:
  • Enough is enough: vote democrat
  • Voldemort: Republican for President (LOLed at that one)

But those were it, far less than what I was used to seeing in the liberal areas of Illinois and Wisconsin. I guess a lot of people are still waiting and seeing.

26. Around here, no one slaps those things on the car.
You are more likely to see yard signs here than car stickers. All I've seen is Ron Paul and Edwards so far.

28. Just came back yesterday from road trip
From WA to CA through Oregon...saw one Bush one in WA, few great funny stickers wish I could remember them against the war and for impeachment in OR and no candidate ones where I was in CA and I was on Hwy 5 down to bay area but I do admit I then parked and took Bart (train) all over...

Still did see though the magnet ones with ribbons for the soldiers...

But...I bought this great sticker in Ashland, OR that says Stop Bitching Start a Revolution and put in on car right away the only other one I have is about the war.

I agree I don't think people are into anyone yet...and talking to folks out on the road most feel the same way no matter red or blue cities...sick of the war, sick of our health care, sick of the congress, sick of Bush...sick of stupid candidates...just basically sick of our country...sad really!

29. I just got back from running errands and saw a huge "Ron Paul" sign
on someone's front lawn. This wasn't your typical candidate lawn sign. It was more like a banner.

30. CA Bay Area
Lots of Obama and Hillary stickers in the East Bay. It's a politically active, liberal area, and lots of Dem money flows in and out of here. Still lots of old Kerry/Edwards stickers. Some current Edwards stickers. And when I leave the Bay Area to go to North to Napa County or eastern Alameda County, I see Ron Paul lawn signs. And lots and lots of anti-war, anti-Bush and impeachment stickers all over California. Meanwhile, I went to the Boston area, Cape Cod and Providence, RI two months ago, and saw almost no stickers of any kind. Maybe this has changed, but the contrast at the time was startling. The few stickers I did see were for Hillary, Mitt or Giuliani. Saw an occasional anti-war or impeachment sticker, but in general, very few stickers of any kind at all.
