McCain still thinks the US could have "won" in Vietnam

McCain compares Iraq, Vietnam

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - Republican presidential candidate John McCain took part in the Veterans Day parade today in Beaufort, South Carolina.

McCain rode part of the way in a nonmilitary Jeep right behind the Marine Corps Band, with his 95-year-old mother, Roberta.

He talked to a crowd of about 200 people packed in a restaurant after the parade. He says it's important for the nation to support those fighting in Iraq.

He compared the situation with the Vietnam war. McCain says the United States won every battle in Vietnam but was forced to leave because of problems on the homefront.

2. Hmm...
McCain could not actually know about or comprehend the situation in Viet Nam - he wasn't getting any information in real time.

20. I was only eleven when the war finally ended.
Having been exposed to the daily toll of war dead on the evening news for six years, I never thought it was about winning, that it was a "patriotic" or "righteous" war. It was just stupid and a waste of American lives.

8. Sad--just like his views on Iraq--doesn't care about whether or not
the war is necessary or in our best interests, but only concerned with being able to call it an American "win"--no matter how much money or how many troops it takes. Seriously, seriously unfit for office, this man.

25. And that,
is exactly what his problem is:denial. If he admits Iraq is a dismal failure and "unwinnable", then he has to come to terms with the failure that is Vietnam. In denial, AND insane. Hang it up, Johnny.

11. WHAT fucking war????
Vietnam was no more a war than is Afghanistan/Iraq. It was an illegal military adventure!

And what does he think 3 demonstrable signs of having "won" would be?

(This vitriol is aimed at McCain -- not the OP.)

12. This is what Obama is talking about
Time to turn the page on these old arguments because they're getting in the way of resolving the problems we face today. I wish we'd learned the lessons of Vietnam, we didn't, so we're going to have to figure out another way to get people to understand our foreign policy has to change.

13. It depends on what the definition of win is
according to all my Republican friends we should have just Nuked them. They also think we should just Nuke the entire middle east. Of course that would kill millions of innocent people and leave all the oil wells contaminated and useless but what the hell we could say we "won". Don't ever misunderestimate the stupidity of Republican.

19. I'll second that last remark
Your Repub friends sound a lot like my Repub relatives. Hideously uninformed and always ready to play the "just nuke them" card. Thoughtless cretins.
