ON This Week, a persistant fly kept buzzing her sweating face. It seemed to have more sense than Condi, though. Her "Let me just say" and "I want to be clear" while she gave a stream of talking points and nonanswers were par for the course.

you unambiguously raise the "black person" issue--I don't think anything in the OP suggest that the fly or the comments about the fly had anything to do with Rice's race.

If a wingnut made some comment about Obama that was clearly racist, I'd find it offensive, but if the comment was similar to this OP (flop sweat and lies) or even if it drew the immediate connection I did (shit and flies), I would not assume it was racist.

I guess being a neocon puts your beyond the pale of such protection.

It boosts one's self esteem to look for other reasons, though. If a clerk in a store scowls at me, I can think it's me or I can realize I don't know and maybe the clerk is having a bad day. Her teenager is in trouble or her husband is cheating on her or she's having financial woes. I don't have to assume she didn't like the looks of me or found something wrong with me. That's a good thing to remember for those of us who've had low self esteem.

This kind of comment is getting there. For this one, it would be easy to presume this is being said because Condiliar is a neocon in with * and Darth. Look for an alternate intention and it is often there. Obama would be better off, too, because he needs votes from all races if he is the candidate and the mainstream culture is pitiless toward victims, especially of this sort of thing. Look at the bully problem - everyone thinks it is part of life and if you complain about it, it is presumed the complainer has the problem and has to learn to stand up to the bully. If you want to be the leader of this nation, you just can't be a victim of words - you have to stand up to whoever it is somehow. I'm not saying I think that's ideal, but it is the way of this culture. And I way a shy, nerdy kid, so I feel your pain.

Flies are attracted to shit coming out of her mouth. Fine. It's even funny. There's a million things that we can say about her without saying something that we would regard as possibly racist if said about one of our own.

It's amazing how many people just totally ignored my original statement that we would object if the same thing were said about Obama. We would object to it as a racist or insensitive comment, not as a lie or the truth or whatever else anyone wants to come up with.

By the way, I"m white, so I don't feel the pain of racism. I'm just attune to such comments because - sadly - I grew up hearing them. Not very much from my immediate family, thankfully.
