Cobb (near Atlanta) County Home Uses Enough Water For Neighborhood - 440,000gal in one month
http://www.wsbtv.com/drought/14545360/detail.html

Cobb Water officials are drafting a warning letter to high water users. Soon, rates will nearly double for customers who use more than their share. Channel 2 dug through the records and found the top home on the list.

Channel 2 obtained months and months of records from the Cobb County Water System. One address rose to the top of the list month after month – a single house that last month used enough water to fill 1,000 hot tubs.

“I think it’s absurd, I really do,” said Ken Scott. Scott lives across the street from 4151 Thunderbird Drive. It’s a single home that uses as much water as a 60 home subdivision.

“With all the pressure on everybody not to use water and to conserve…I think it’s ridiculous,” said Scott.

Over the past six months the address has used an average of 390,000 gallons of water. Last month it was 440,000 – up 15% from last October when there was no crisis. That one home would drain the nearby water plant’s filtration field in less than a year.

Probably just some experimental tomatoes. Or the pool. Big pool.

Then, too, an OCD handwasher can be really dangerous in this situation.

52. That's The First Thing That Came To My Mind...
About a year ago they busted a huge McMansion not far from here that was the ultimate hothouse...three floors of nothing but tubing, grow lights and the delicious odor of canibus on the vine.

The tip off wasn't even the high electric or water bill (I think the paper said they consumed about 100,000 gallons a month) but complaints from neighbors of large trucks moving in and out of the property. I could just see these 18-wheelers loaded to the brim.

33. No, owner is registered as Chris G. Carlos
14,511 square feet, 5 bedrooms, 6.5 bathrooms, and a 5,438 square foot basement.

Maybe he's converted that into an indoor pool.

Mr. Carlos purchased the home on December 19, 2001 for $500,000.

BTW his last annual property tax was $37,613.64.

22. Random question: Is Fayetteville in Cobb County?
Maybe it's changed since I was there, but--as beautiful as it is--it was not some hideaway for the very wealthy. I stayed with a family whose water came from a well in the backyard.

I love this area of the country and I shudder to contemplate what might happen if this region begins to run out of water. Here in AZ we face similar issues, but not this dire, yet at least.

28. It's the lawn
I remember a drought years back - '86 or so, in northern Alabama. I was only like, six, but the memory is pretty clear. Everyone's lawn was brown. The grass would cut into your feet and stay there. Hell, the cops would patrol just to cite people running sprinkler systems, at least in our neck of Huntsville.

Grass (the yard kind, not the basement kind) is the biggest waste of water humanity has devised. You hear a lot about conserving water with your toilet, well, people should be more worried about the showers they give their lawns. A sprinkler doesn't look like much water, but can go through over a hundred gallons of the stuff very quickly All so you can have green crap in front of your house that probably shouldn't be there anyway. I've always been in favor of using lawns as a garden, or even better, letting native plants grow.

When you see pictures like this, of a large manse with lush big lawns in the middle of a drought... or when you fly over New Mexico or southern Nevada and see big green patches where there's a well-watered golf course... you know who's to blame for the water shortage.

29. Hey Math whizzes: Versailles Palace
Edited on Fri Nov-09-07 07:10 PM by supernova
Just for fun I looked up the water useage at Versailles. They report that with all the water features turned on, the palace gardens go through abut 3600 cubic meters of water/hour.

What percentage of Versailles' usage does this nut take up?

My thinking is oddly, that for it's size, Versailles (the most wasteful palace in Europe) is more efficient, but I could be wrong.
