re: hospital infections

The University of New Mexico Hospital flushed its water lines overnight after routine tests found a bacterium that could cause Legionnaire's disease. Legionnaires' disease in turn can cause pneumonia or Pontiac fever, which is an acute form of the flu. Two of the 32 hospital faucets that were randomly tested came up positive for the bacterium. Officials said it can grow from sitting water in pipes, so crews ran each faucet for five minutes to flush the system. They finished by 1 a.m. Thursday. There's no requirement to test for the bacterium, but a hospital representative said it does tests anyway. A doctor with the hospital's infection control staff said the risk to normally healthy people, employees and visitors is low.)
