LONDON - Britain on Thursday backed new US sanctions on Iran’s military and three Iranian banks to choke off funds to the Islamic Republic.

“We endorse the US administration’s efforts to apply further pressure on the Iranian regime,” said a Foreign Office spokesman after Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice announced the sanctions in Washington.

“As the prime minister (Gordon Brown) has said on October 24, we are prepared to lead the way to a third resolution of sanctions and at the same time support tougher European Union sanctions.”

Since coming to power in June, Brown has stuck to his predecessor Tony Blair’s line that diplomacy is the best way to resolve the stand-off between the West and the Islamic republic.
