Regarding Elections in Cuba
Just trying to get a firm grasp of the recent electoral events in Cuba. Apparently multiple candidates in each district announce their intention to run..they each have their history and positions posted and the community chooses one of them for the general election. At general election time if that one candidate does not receive 50% of the vote then the election goes back to the district again to vote on someone different..on and on until someone is found who gets 50%. In the current election 1/3 of those who won elections are not Communist Party members. 1/2 of the elections resulted with the candidate not getting 50% and so must be sent back for another vote. Half of all elected reps from the last election have been replaced. As for this 50% vote to get a person into office..it sort of reminds me of how a union opperates and votes here in the US. For example, the Chrysler union contract needs to "yes" vote of 50% of the membership or it will be sent back to the drawing board for another contract. Is this how in theory, the Cuban socialist democracy is supposed to work? Like one big union?

3. could you provide info for the
"only approved people can run" part of your post? I simply don't know enough about their system. From reports i have read in the foreign press and Cuban press, the communities get to decide th candidate and anyone can run.

4. I guess what is hard for me
is that there is so much info pro and con on Cuba that you would almost have to live there for a few years to stuy the system for yourself. I wonder if there are independent minded anthropologists doing this?
