What is your sign that America has jumped the Shark...
Here's my three....

Gitmo...

Hanna Montana...

Dancing with the stars....

Why, because more people are interested in who was voted off the stage than what is going on at Gitmo....

As for Hanna Montana, the latest Disney creation, is another in a long line of prepubescent "actors" who promote shallow values such as following fashion trends and enticing same audience into spending obscene amounts of money on concert tickets and all the paraphanalia that goes along with what ever the marketing mavens at Disney can think up...

And, it's crapy music...

Well that, and the fact kids look to her as some kind of role model...

And if that's the role model for kids these days, we are doomed...

Well that's my three big ones...

Add on if you care...

Or just, whatever...

39. I know, it's no slur against Gore.
Just an observation that he went from understudy to the heir apparent to being one of the most reviled individuals ever labelled as (D). He was an interesting choice in the light of hindsight, considering his behaviours during 2005/6, don't you think?

45. It is Ironic..but learning a bit
of the history of that whole debacle ..it would seem that lieman was chosen for Gore by some advisers(who thought he could bring up the level of morality(Big Farce)).. and lieman seemed to have a hand in sabotaging his own victory as VP. The "military votes" he insisted that should be counted even though they were legally late..and the "debate" with the dick cheney that was more of a lovefest(now I know why). Who knows what else the little whining warmonger sabotaged?

65. Don't forget that Holy Joe refused to give up his Senate seat

to run for VP but ran for both offices simultaneously. I thought Al should have thrown him under the bus for that reason alone, before he was ever announced as his running mate. Al should have said "Thanks but no thanks" and chosen someone else. It showed LIEberman's lack of commitment to the Party ticket. Perhaps it even showed that he knew the election would be stolen. He certainly helped them do it.

47. I didn't start paying attention
to politics until 1999 but I can see from reading some history in politics over the last few years on DU that there should have been quite a few clues.

The coup by the 5 on the extreme court was even more glaring because of the weeks(that seemed like months) that we had dared to HOPE!

Right~ In retrospect.."All the gawd damned lies about that one as well."

Or did you know at the time?

Gore had the popular vote and he had the most votes in Florida and it was also our corporatemediawhores who handed us the bushcoup..without them there would be no bushit.

68. I concur. 12/12/2000 was like 11/22/63 in that there was

a feeling of "This can't be happening in the US."

The assassinations of the Sixties, the war in Vietnam, etc., were all bad but assassinations and wars had happened before in US history. Never before had the SCOTUS decided who would be the next president. Never before was I convinced that an election had been stolen. There were just too many signs of theft.

Never before had I seen such stupidity and meanness as the GOP staged "citizen revolt" in Dade County or the protesters outside VP Gore's home yelling "Get out of Cheney's house." (Hello, presidents and VPs don't move out until the next administration is inaugurated. Those faux protests were inane gestures and a big tip-off that we had some nasty-ass opposition.)

Never would I have imagined all this, or that the "news media" would talk perkily about how well democracy had worked. I just kept saying "It's a bloodless coup, you idiots" to the talking heads but of course they did not respond. We have since learned our own Party does not respond, either. The future hasn't looked good since SCOTUS crowned King George. :scared:

that someone (more than one) is running for president who does not believe in evolution and rather than be laughed off the stage as a dunce, they are applauded.

2. That 20% of the population still believes that George Bush is doing a good job as President.

3. That we have not taken Cheney and Bush in handcuffs for outing a CIA agent. That America is not pounding on the traitors' doors.

8. Somewhat banal, but
A disastrous holiday season for retailers.

I want evidence that Americans understand that they need to stop spending money. The American consumer fuels the economy, and they are constantly encouraged to spend, spend, spend, but the moment they realize that their very future is in jeopardy because they spend, spend, spend, they will come to their senses and stop spending.

That cessation of spending will be reflected in the earnings estimates of stocks, and then liquidity in the markets will begin to dry up, and it will be impossible to pretend that we live in a healthy economy.

Almost all of today's "Democrats" are http://blueworksbetter.com/EisenhowerFlamingLiberal">far to the right of Eisenhower - a Republican! Hell, two of our three Democratic frontrunners for president even love war more than Ike!

30 years ago, a typical family could be middle class on a single typical full-time wage. Today, it requires at least two full-time breadwinners!

I first noticed this 15 or so years ago. It has gotten worse since then.

In most western european countries, a single wage can still support a family.

She is a fourteen year old kid. If you want to hate on somebody, try her achey breaky Daddy. THAT I could probably get behind. Have you checked out that kid's concert schedule? I did because I have an 11 year old kid and figured if she wandered through our town it wouldn't hurt to take my daughter and her friends. HOLY SHIT! For one thing the concerts are sold out forever. For another, the tickets are really expensive. And for another, that kid is doing concerts practically back to back all the way through the holidays.

SOMEBODY is making a fortune off that kid and it isn't right. For the life of me, I can't say bad stuff about HER.

58. 2000 coup, 9-11 commission, Iraq war run-up.
I was relatively non-political until 1999. I saw one of the debates BvsG by chance... Bush scared the crap out of me, and came off as an idiot, but was lauded as having 'won' the debate????

9-11 was hideous, but the 9-11 commission was a joke (ignoring bldg. 7 and the hundreds of firefighters/police/maintenance workers...).

I went to all 3 pre-Iraq war protests in SF because it was absolutely obvious we had no reason to invade...........

As to cultural shit..... it's beyond useless drivel.
