Gore's Favorabilities Up 10; Plurality Of Dems Want Him To Run by NYPopulist

Gallup released a poll earlier today, the first of its kind since the Nobel Peace Prize was announced on Friday, and the results are very telling: Gore should enter the race for the Democratic nomination.

For one, Gore's favorabilities are up an astounding ten points overall since early August, and even more importantly, his approval rating among Democrats rests at an impressive 79%. Just for comparisons sake, that is nine points higher than Obama's favorabilities and fifteen points higher than Edwards'; Hillary only bests Gore by five points in the category. I'm also willing to speculate that many Democrats don't remember than Gore was the first of the bunch to oppose the war - if and when such information were to ever be learned by the Democratic masses, I imagine his ratings would exceed those of Clinton's.

Even more importantly than favorabilities though is the fact that a plurality of Democrats would like to see Gore jump into the race for the White House. By a 48-43% margin, respondents would like to see the former vice president throw his hat into the ring. No, it's not a majority, but when you would potentially have four top-tier contenders for the nomination, 48% is an awfully high number. Does 48% wanting him to run equal 48% of the primary votes? Probably not, but its still a very good reflection of Gore's appeal as a candidate. It's also likely a reflection of the electorate's weariness of a year-long race for the nomination - it has long been said that Gore, believe it or not, would provide voters with a fresh face with a late October entry.

Now, the same poll also finds a slight uptick in support when Gore's name is thrown in with the rest of the Democratic field - he's up four points since earlier in the month and in third place. That being the case, I've long said that these polls are not a reflection of Gore's actual support should he run (as evidenced by the previous paragraph). For an accurate picture of how many people might vote for Gore in the primaries, the question must be asked as such: "If Gore were to run and the Democratic primaries were held today, who would you vote for?" These polls instead have not included the clause that I highlighted and thus, many, many Democrats do not choose Gore based on the fact he's not currently running.... **

Lucky for us, a little birdie has told me that the AlGore.org people have commissioned a Zogby Poll that will ask the question correctly - stay tuned for a poll that may very well shock the pundits and mainstream media later this week.

**A similar situation to the one NYPopulist describes: One question by the CNN/Opinion Research Corporation is "And thinking about all the candidates currently running for president, both from the Democratic Party and the Republican Party, which one do you think is most likely to win the general election for president in November 2008?"

Clinton 45%
Giuliani 16%
Obama 8%
Thompson 5%
Edwards 4%
McCain 4%
Gore 2%

Why is Gore at 2%? One reason might be because he isn't currently running!

New Poll: Gore more electable than Hillary
The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll only polls Clinton v. Giuliani and Gore v. Giuliani, but the result is clear: Gore is the far more electable candidate, something many supporters have been saying for a long time now. With favorabilities on the rise and international acclaim to go along with his movie star status, its no wonder that the former vice president polls four points higher than Hillary; Clinton winds up edging out Giuliani 49-47% while Gore handily defeats Rudy 52-46%. And remember, Giuliani is supposed to be their most electable guy - imagine what Gore would do to the likes of Romney, McCain or Thompson! America is ready to repent for 2000 and is ready for a Gore administration - Al running in the general election is our best bet to win back the White House.

I just wish he'd throw his hat in the ring or come out and say he's absolutely ruled it out forever.

posting them. It was cathartic enough to post it before deleting it! However, when I went back to the other post where RG was lurking he/she had left me a snarky remark. I answered with one word: chill. That was followed by a tirate of RG saying no one would tell him/her to shut up! THEN I wished I had left my post alone on this OP.

I CAN get a little "snappy" at times.....actually Snappy Turtle was the name of a gift shop I owned......in a vacation town that raced turtles!

52. No Question - He Should Run
This isn't in keeping with the light-hearted tone of this thread, but I think people will agree with the sentiment. I posted this elsewhere, but that thread fell off quickly and hardly anyone saw it. This is my response to a column by John Nichols in The Nation.

Link to column: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/10/12/opinion/main3361667.shtml

This column from the Nation is a great piece of writing and makes a valid point, but it stops short of making the most important point. Yes, if Al Gore doesn't run for President, there will be a hole in his resume, and that might concern him a bit. What should concern him more, and probably does concern him more if he looks at it this way, is not what this would do to his resume, but what it means for this country and the planet. Mr. Gore is not petty and won't make this momentous decision based on a vanity issue such as his resume.

The planet is at a crucial juncture. What occurs in the next few years will determine whether we go beyond the point of no return on global warming or we take the steps necessary to save Earth as we know it.

Our country is teetering on the sheer edge of a rocky and treacherous cliff with regard to the survival of our civil liberties and our tripartite system of government as laid out in our constitution. If the very nature of our country, as designed by the founding fathers, is destroyed, America itself is destroyed. There may still be a huge chunk of land on the map labeled "United States of America", but that country will not be our country. Unitary Executive is just a nice-sounding euphemism for Dictator.

It could be argued that Mr. Gore will have as much, or possibly more, opportunity to influence the awareness of global warming as an absolutely critical issue if he remains a private citizen. Obviously he has a tremendous opportunity to stimulate public awareness now, as a private citizen. After all, he just won the Nobel Peace Prize for doing so - and winning the award does not by any means mean that the job is over. But, he will not have the opportunity to determine policy if he is not the President.

With regard to the other issue, the preservation of our constitution and thus the very nature of our nation, none of the current candidates have indicated a full acknowledgment of this critical issue. Most haven't mentioned it much at all. Perhaps some relish the thought that if elected they will enjoy the concentrated, extreme and unconstitutional power that Bush and Cheney have given the presidency. His book, The Assault on Reason, as well as his speeches, demonstrate that Mr. Gore has the entire picture and can communicate it clearly, effectively, completely and with great passion. The only person who will be in a position to guarantee that we do not fall off this cliff into totalitarianism is the person inaugurated as president in January, 2009.

If our course remains the same , someday soon, maybe three years from now, maybe five, but very soon, we will be waking up every day in a dictatorship. This will be a tragedy of monumental proportions. I can't express the profound grief I feel over the loss of this "noble experiment" in democracy. I can't imagine the pain of regret I would feel to wake up in such circumstances knowing that I had been the person who could have prevented it, but I chose not to. I don't think Mr. Gore wants to find out first hand how that would feel.

53. The bolded part in the OP is the part that I have been thinking about for months.
In all the polls, the ones that include Gore in the list, I've always figured that a lot of people wouldn't choose Gore, because the question is not worded as, "if Gore were running". They just throw his name in with all the other candidates and people think, "well, Gore's not running, so...." and they pick someone else, even though they might actually pick Gore if he were an announced candidate.

Ok, did that make sense? Anyway, I can't wait to see that new Zogby poll - I think it will be very telling.

GORE, GORE AND MORE GORE!!!

66. Thou speakest truth.
Tis burden to deny such musing.

The dankest most unpleasant and foresaken pussy should stand as a formidable mount' to such as he.

Such a pitiable beast woud'st remain for eternity unsurpassed in worth by such as this cursed knave of Mantua, whose name I dare not to utter lest my soul be stolen from me by some passing devil. :scared:

56. GORE GORE GORE GORE GORE GORE GORE
and more GORE.

The most favorite threads at DU for the past three months has had the GORE running for president theme.

Are we representative of other Dems -- or are we much more to the left?

57. My guess is that Gore's life has been threatened. Often.
And by people who were very able to carry out horrific punishment on either him or his loved ones.

Ditto the Senate and House leadership. The powers that be will not allow a true Liberal to grasp the reins of power and survive.

The anthrax attacks and other means will surface if Al Gore runs for president. It's the reason he didn't fight the 2000 recount as hard as he wanted to.

77. gotta stop you right there...
He fought for the recount. The Supreme Court nixed it. There is no intermediate step between a supreme court decision and armed revolution. He wasn't willing to take it that far.

80. Kinda
But I believe as an acting president pro Tem of the Senate Gore could have demanded senatorial action much earlier than the Supreme "hanging" Court intervention. The specifics of the actions Gore could have taken I'm not clear on. So i'm told anyway.

79. Thanks and a question...
I'm 100% with you regarding your Al Gore sentiments.

I'm also beginning to wonder what the purpose of threads like this is?

Why?

On DU we unequivocally want Al Gore way more than any other candidate! Poll after poll here has shown that. You don't have to convince DUers that Al is the best choice --- he is!

Yet the people that need to read all this Al Gore-must-run stuff don't hang out on DU or probably the blogosphere in general. The Dems that seem oblivious to nothing but the corporate MSM are the ones we need to reach. And beyond that, we need to reach Al himself.

All this wonderful energy on DU telling folks what we already know.

Again, I agree with your wishes - I just question the method of all these zillions of PLEASE RUN AL POSTS - seems we are missing the audience that really needs to read them???

That is where we need to direct our energy. A tough road indeed...

peace~:)
