Gore is now running for president.
Last year Ezra Klein introduced me to a word I had never heard: disintermediation. Simply put, Klein (and others) were saying that Gore was bypassing the American press in order to get his message out directly. In 2003 he began a series of speeches on the decline of America due to Bushs disastrous foreign policy and contempt for our Constitution.

http://www.prospect.org/cs/articles?article=the_new_new...

He has continued that path with a movie on global warming, An Inconvenient Truth, which has fundamentally changed the American debate on this most important issue. Along with publishing a companion book for the movie, he has also published a book (The Assault on Reason) on the decline of American discourse, due to the corporate control of television and other media. He goes on to talk about the power of the Internet to change American discourse so that it is two-way in nature (rather than one-way like television) with access for all citizens so as to re-vitalize our democracy.

I believe Al Gore is now running for president. He is using these principles of disintermediation and democratic discussion to run the kind of 21st century campaign worthy of his visionary record.. On Friday he held a news conference acknowledging his latest international honor, the Nobel Peace Prize. Toward the end, he stated

I will be doing everything I can to try to understand how to best use the honor and recognition of this award as a way of speeding up the change in awareness and the change in urgency. It is truly a planetary emergency and we have to respond quickly.

Gore has stated in recent months that he is waiting to see if the Democratic candidates will give this issue the attention it deserves and that he isnt currently satisfied with what they have done.

Today, Gore launched his new version of Current (formerly current.tv, now current.com). Not only did he launch it, for the first time he added content. Today he took three major positions:

1. We should get out of Iraq as quickly as practicable;
2. Universal, single-payer health care for all Americans; and
3. The need for new protections for all Americans from governmental spying.

http://current.com/people/algore

In other words, he has taken common sense positions on major campaign issues that leave Hillary and Obama sucking his dust. Of course his concrete proposals on climate change are also light years ahead of any viable Democratic candidate. Soon, I believe he will follow up on his promise to reflect on how best to use his award to help save our civilization by formally announcing his candidacy. It wont be a traditional campaign, but a visionary one.

Just as 1960 was the first campaign where television changed the race (television viewers thought Kennedy won the historic debate, while the smaller number of radio listeners thought Nixon won), the 2008 campaign will be the first where the Internet plays a major role in determining the outcome.

In 2000, the press framed Al Gore as a liar. That is why some people still believe that Gore said he invented the Internet, or discovered Love Canal, or the Love Story lie, etc., etc. This is why some people still believe that Gore didnt emphasize the environment, because of the lies of the press. In 2008, Al Gore will be speaking for himself to a much greater extent, aided by fact-checking bloggers. That is a truth which could be much more than convenient, for us and our planet.

133. Al Does give me hope
but he is one of the favorite kicking cans of the mainstream press and the RWing. I would hate to see someone that could do so much good be destroyed a second time by a coorperate controlled media, which like it or not is still too powerful for the internet blog-o-sphere to overpower. I think Al would work better as a rouge agent working to sway public opinon away from this out of control Republican ideology, and try to bring things closer to a moderate view, if not a left wing view.

I think we can all agree that the current movement of our country is so far to the right of moderate it is not even funny.

...but as for the right-wing...they don't speak for all conservatives. I have actually had probably 5 different conservatives in recent weeks acknowledge to me that they ARE in fact impressed with Al Gore, and would probalby vote for him if he ran.

This simply BLEW ME AWAY, especially the ones who offered the opinion without my asking :) :)

287. Serious question...Do you think that's because of his actions on climate change?
Or because he is not being introduced as "Democractic *job position*" anymore?

I think the perception of his has improved on both sides because he has played climate change as completely non-partisan. Will be interesting to see how the public reacts to "Democratic" Al Gore rather than "Champion of the Environment" Al Gore.

235. The world is benefitting from his work now
Hence the Nobel. Why would you think we aren't benefitting from his work now? What do you think Current is? The Alliance for Climate Protection? The Climate Project? Generation Investment Management? An Inconvenient Truth? The movie, the book, the new book coming out next May to give us solutions, the slideshows, the meetings, the progress he has forged on a global scale? Are you stating none of it is of benefit unless he runs in this decrepid system again? A system many just sit and allow to rot more daily while shaking their pom poms? Just what do you want from the man? After thrity years in that cessspool it isn't enough? You want him to suffer some more? To give up all he has to do what exactly? What guarantees do you have that progress would be made in that snake pit? He has excoriated CONGRESS in his video, and that means Democrats as well. Any guesses as to why?

172. I hope your right. What do you consider a landslide? ...
Because I just came across a poll on Friday, after Gore was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize,
that asked if Gore ran for President, would you vote for him?
And, there is still approximately 35% of those that cast a vote, that stated that they would
not vote for Gore. This was not-scientific, with no margin for error listed.
So, is 65% - 35% considered a landslide?
35% appear to be the hardcore Republicans, what if they convinced another 13% to vote with
them? That margin would be within stealing-the-election-numbers. AGAIN!

Also, I think Hillary would come after Gore as well. How dare he take away my presidency.

187. If it's not scientific then there is no basis for the poll.
Actually 35% is high for hard core repugs. I believe that 28% would be the considered hard core that would vote Republican even if they committed a crime and were found guilty. And considering recent news about young voters the Republicans are losing instead of maintaining a piece those voters.

Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) Al Gore's Nobel Peace Prize hasn't translated into an increase in support for a presidential bid, a poll found Tuesday.

Asked if they would like to see the former vice president run for president in 2008, people said no by a 54 percent to 41 percent margin, according to a Gallup Poll. That was about the same as last March, when people opposed his running 57 percent to 38 percent.

Even among Democrats there was no visible surge of interest in Gore. In the new survey, 48 percent said they would like him to run and 43 percent said they would not. Last March, Democrats were in favor of him entering the race 54 percent to 41 percent statistically the same as the new poll...

whatever the polls are without him even getting in I believe a mass wave of vision will sweep over a, campaign as usual weary, populous and erupt into a huge following for Gore. He will reach the young people quickly and win the election.

I could see Al Gore's campaign commercials now. ...He'll use clips from his debates with Chimpy...

Well all be reminded of how he wanted to put our surplus of Social Security in a LOCKBOX, or how Bushs tax cuts are for the wealthiest Americans, and the very missed Pay-as-you-go system of economics.

.....And just once again, Id like to see the clip of Kerrys I voted for the $80 million, before I voted against it clip. But this time I want to hear his next sentence. I want all freepers to see and hear how Kerry was explaining (the now well known fact), BUSHS WAR CHEST ISNT SPENT ON OUR TROOPS!!!

vs. voting for a candidate that you know thru many contacts during the campaign.

If you attend functions that candidates attend you have a better chance to express your views and be heard then just as a voter. It also depends on the venue available for meeting those candidates.

http://www.amazon.com/World-According-Gore-Incredible-P...

Other candidates have either put out books about what their positions are, or have had them done by a ghostwriter/friend. Since Gore is running such a stealth campaign, and he doesn't want to detract attention from his main focus of global warming; he had someone else put out his 'position' book.

Absolutely BRILLIANT.

213. I don't think Al Gore "had" Bill Katovsky put out this book.
Edited on Tue Oct-16-07 03:02 AM by Apollo11
I think Bill Katovsky saw a market for this book and rushed to fill it quickly.

If Gore has not jumped into the race by early November, it will be too late for him to even enter some of the primaries. So there is a small window for this book to appear "relevant".

Of course - if the Admiral is right (see OP) and Al Gore does announce his candidacy, then I guess the book will sell a lot of copies and Katovsky might become a wealthy man.

PS - Bill Katovsky has his own blog on Huffington Post:

16. Gore has learned well the lessons of indie media.
He has taken to heart the beauty of blogs, of internet, of word-of-mouth campaigning.

The "forerunners" in the race are dependent (addicted) to their yes-men and advisers and to the traditional media outlets. They have no idea the true ambivalence or outright disregard many of us feel regarding their status as candidates.

Gore for President.

26. We can only hope this is his vision, my sister in law recently got her arm broke
I took her to the hospital, they were kind as could be but without insurance she was pretty much just wrapped up and sent on her way, they said she needed it to be reset, surgery and so gave us numbers of drs to call, long and short of it, without insurance, no specialist will touch her, they all told her she had to go to the only hospital in town that takes welfare patients, so now needing surgery, she has been put on a waiting list for surgery to fix her broken arm.

Love this country and its so called caring about it's people, she has cash and offered to pay, it didn't matter, crazy.

83. Talk to
legal aid or to an attorney where your sister resides. Some states have laws that prohibit doctors from refusing treatment to a patient who demonstrates the ability to pay for such treatment - or who pay in advance for treatment. Some states have laws on the books that prohibit price discrimination (i.e., charging different prices for the same services to different patients) for medical services.

Might work. Might not. Thing is if the law is on your sister's side and if she has the money to pay for the medical care then she has the money to pay a legal retainer and seek damages. Legally, refusal to treat a patient with the documented ability to pay is something very different from refusal to pay someone without the ability to pay. A doctor who accepts some patients while refusing others who have the ability to pay opens himself up to all sorts of allegations including violation of his professional oath and various prohibited forms of discrimination among other things.

101. HR676 - Universal Single Payer
http://www.house.gov/conyers/news_hr676.htm

Brief Summary of HR 676: The United States National Health Insurance Act,
Or Expanded & Improved Medicare For All

"Of all the forms of inequality,
injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane."
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The United States National Health Insurance Act establishes an American national health insurance program. The bill would create a publicly financed, privately delivered health care system that uses the already existing Medicare program by expanding and improving it to all U.S. residents, and all residents living in U.S. territories. The goal of the legislation is to ensure that all Americans will have access, guaranteed by law, to the highest quality and most cost effective health care services regardless of their employment, income, or health status.
With over 45-75 million uninsured Americans, and another 50 million who are under- insured, the time has come to change our inefficient and costly fragmented non health care system.

Who is Eligible

Every person living in or visiting the United States and the U.S. Territories would receive a United States National Health Insurance Card and ID number once they enroll at the appropriate location. Social Security numbers may not be used when assigning ID cards.

Health Care Services Covered

This program will cover all medically necessary services, including primary care, in patient care, outpatient care, emergency care, prescription drugs, durable medical equipment, long term care, mental health services, dentistry, eye care, chiropractic, and substance abuse treatment. Patients have their choice of physicians, providers, hospitals, clinics and practices. No co-pays or deductibles are permitted under this act.

Conversion To A Non-Profit Health Care System

Private health insurers shall be prohibited under this act from selling coverage that duplicates the benefits of the USNHI program. Exceptions to this rule include coverage for cosmetic surgery, and other medically unnecessary treatments. Those who are displaced as the result of the transition to a non- profit health care system are the first to be hired and retrained under this act.

Cost Containment Provisions/ Reimbursement

The National USNHI program will set reimbursement rates annually for physicians, allow for "global budgets" (annual lump sums for operating expenses) for health care providers; and negotiate prescription drug prices. The national office will provide an annual lump sum allotment to each existing Medicare region; each region will administer the program.

The conversion to a not-for-profit health care system will take place over a 15 year period. U.S. treasury bonds will be sold to compensate investor-owned providers for the actual appraised value of converted facilities used in the delivery of care; payment will not be made for loss of business profits. Health insurance companies could be sub-contracted out to handle reimbursements.

Proposed Funding For USNHI Program:

Maintaining current federal and state funding of existing health care programs. A modest payroll tax on all employers of 3.3%. A 5% health tax on the top 5% of income earners. A small tax on stock and bond transfers. Closing corporate tax loop-holes, repealing the Bush tax cut.

they are valuable information that more in Du might need to learn about thank you both, for right now she is scheduled to see a specialist at the hospital on Friday and they told her she can make payments and only needs seventy five dollars for the initial payment which she can easily afford.

28. wow i believe you are right..and look into the article you posted by Ezra Klein ..
Edited on Mon Oct-15-07 01:09 PM by flyarm
and how Gore used Move-On for disintermediation...now it makes perfect sense why the neo cons grabbed onto the Ad by Move -On to smear them and try to marginalize them..they know..they know Gore is going to run..or they are scared shitless he will run..so they tried to marginalize the one Group Gore has used for disintermediation..they had to try to crush Move-On before Gore could run..

but what did it do within the progressives and dems..it back fired on the Neo cons..it motivated Dems and progressives to dig into their pockets..and give to Move-On...

Gore has virtually beat them at their own game!!

he fucking out smarted them!!....big time..because people that had never given to Move -On did so because of the Petraeus ad...there by enlarging their lists of contributors..and it even garnered more Independants...for Move On..and possibly some republicans..a bigger list is now had by Move On..for disintermediation that Gore will probably use should he thrown his name in the fray...

it was brilliant..absolutely brilliant..

wow i am so impressed by this article..thank you for bringing it to our attention!!

I had also noticed over a month ago Hillary putting out a few jabs at Gore..and i thought..she knows..or she is scared shitless also..

no one knows the inside of this machine better than Al..no one..we can only think we are smart..about it all..Al *is* smart about it all..he knows who is owned by who..and where and when!!

and ...for me i await..

RUN AL RUN....

56. I agree.
The San Francisco speech against the war in September 2002 was historic. I chose to reference the MoveOn speeches (which began, I believe in August 2003), because for me they represent the "new politics" because they were sponsored by an Internet-based organization. My recollection is that the 2002 speeches were traditional in sponsorship.

Having said that, I have seen statements by Gore (similar to those of Dean) that labor and environmentalists need a place at the table.

because of NAFTA, etc... and because he was such a shill for Clinton foreign policy in his Senate days. Not to mention he was one of 10 Dem Senators to vote for the original Iraq war, etc..

But he seems to have undergone a personal and political transformation. Let's pray that it's real! Pray pray pray. And if it is, then lets pray the OP is correct on all counts. This combination of circumstances - a real Gore transformation and a Gore run - seems the only hope we have.

Help us Gore-Be-One Kanobi. You're our only hope.

there was a thread about this yesterday. According to the OP, the version of NAFTA introduced by Bill and Al was quite different from the one that was eventually made law by congress. Gore may have well being advocating something good at the time that got corrupted by the thugs. So until I know more about it, I'm not going to hold it against him. Meanwhile, Bill Clinton had no business signing the final version into law.

I have thought for a while that Edwards wouldn't want the second spot again but you know I'm beginning to change my mind

AND - I really think something must be up because WHY if Al Gore wasn't at least SERIOUSLY considering running doesn't he just flat out definitievly SAY SO?

However if those are the three principles that Gore is pushing then I would have to say I would be comfortable with him winning the primary.

That said I will not wait and waste time pining away for him while Hilary is trying to push her way into a coronation.

...while you're at it. I see this more as a BobbyKennedy sandbags Gene McCarthy moment since I support John Edwards (who has a better chance than Dennis Kucinich unfortunately IMHO). You take what you can get. I wish Gore would have thrown his support to Edwards and I think it's a shame he hasn't done so.

But if he is running, I'm in since he's already won the Presidency once !

118. Remember now, and always (because it will come up again) that Gore
snubbed Lieberman when Lieberman ran for president in '04. Gore endorsed Howard Dean way early on in the primary.

Gore shoved HIS OWN (DLC appointed, strategically suggested?) ex-running mate out of the way. He snubbed Lieberman like a nasty ex-wife who poisoned the kids against him.

DUers aren't the only ones who had Joe's number.

Remember the three crappy arguments you'll see presented here against Gore:

* He chose Lieberman as a running mate.

* He's better off in the private sector.

* He was DLC.

-They're all horsecrap.

220. important note
we WAS DLC, not he IS. big difference. He has also done more to spark environmental awareness in the USA than anyone I can think of. He took a hint from Michael Moore. Bypass the media, make a documentary. He is adored on this side of the Atlantic for what he is doing in the name of the global warming awareness. He would greatly IMPROVE the image of the USA in the eyes of the world. End war, Health care for all, and protections against spying!!! what a great candidate. Run AL! for the good of the world run. Landslide, landslide agaisnt any Republican excet a more narrow victory over Ron Paul (a lot of paul supporters could vote Gore for an anti spying stance.)

Perhaps Al should run, win, and work to rename the party the Social Democrat Party of the United States.

DLC.

Another uninformed attack is by way of Tipper and her efforts to get a consumer label on music containing adult content so that parents can regulate their underage children's consumption of such material.

No I don't think it's a good idea to rename the Democrats. But that name, such an echo of a sad part of history, would be a superb name for the Repubelickin's :D

is French. Generally Gore is known for his recent film about global warming. The press covered the release of his movie but France became much more concerned about global warming after the 2003 heatwave so it is not necessarily because of Gore. Many folks here, left or right, do not understand why the USA has not signed on to Kyoto and see this film as a sign that some Americans get the picture.

76. I don't know I think he's smarter then that.
He knows how the game is played.
He knows who is truly running the country.
He knows that if you get in these peoples way, you will have an "accident".
He knows that the game is rigged from the primary to the general.
He knows that the US economy is held up with scotch tape and chewing gum and once a dem. is in charge they will let it flop.
He knows that as soon as a democrat is elected interest rates will jump.
He knows that the price at the pump will also take a jump.

So I think that he's smarter than that, who would want all of that blamed on them.

96. Actually, the economy always gets better under Democrats.
Because we actually do things that stimulate the growth of new industries and new jobs. And, since we're not insane, flight capital returns to us from whence it has flown. (Although it will be a lot harder this time.)

Yes, the economy is being held together with chewing gum and duct tape, but that's because it's under a rapacious Republican administration. The economy, nightmarish as it is, isn't the real problem.

The real problem is very likely the dissolution of the federal system under the pressure of millions of coastal refugees looking for homes, jobs, food, and shelter in the central states which are under crisis of crop failure.

you hadn't heard we are broke and not a lot of outsiders are ready to buy our junk treasuries lately to help us out. The two parties are different sides of the same coin, they are both doing the bidding of their corporate masters. It's not if there is a Dem or Rep controlled congress, for the corps it's business as usual. I could foresee and almost even split on the House and Senate, this way anything, anybody wanted to pass that would actually do some good, like repeal the tax cuts Bush put in, could easily be shot down or drowned in some committee. The strongest best intentioned President can't do squat if the 2 houses won't go along with it.

89. Kucinich is the only one saying he'll bring the Bushites to justice...
...and I believe he means it, he's old-school that way...

Get Ready To Read Bush His Miranda Rights

...and I really really REALLY wanna see this little scene go down one day very soon:

On the other hand, Kucinich remains something of a voice in the wilderness; he doesn't have Gore's recognition factor, not by a long shot... they both have serious negatives to deal with, nearly all of them absolutely MANUFACTURED by the right-wing media--except for Gore's public capitulation and abdication of the position that should surely have been his back in 2000, had he fought harder for it... and this still irks me to this day; all I really know for sure about Gore is that he knows how to surrender in the face of nearly EVEN odds...
But that little hopeful voice within also dreams that perhaps Gore or Kerry will eventually return, stronger and smarter and better-organized than before, to claim what was stolen from them...
Hell, I'll be surprised if we even GET another election to vote in; I'm waiting for these fuckers to engineer another "surprise attack" on America so Generalissimo Butch and his neocon buddies can go to DefCon 4, declare martial law and put everyone's remaining civil rights into a "lock-box" along with whatever shreds of the Constitution they can still scrape up...
Until that actually happens though, I will continue to hope that Gore or Kucinich or SOMEBODY can still get in there and try and turn this sinking ship around...
So cheers to all! Go Gore Go!

Disintermediation is happening everywhere because of our new localized, dispersed, electronic embedded technologies. Toffler and McLuhan both discussed its effects. It is why many management jobs are disappearing. People will be doing things that are productive directly, not so much managing other people.

the Dem 08 platform.

He has just drawn the line in the sand, and is in my mind saying, these are the price I exact to let the rest of you even play at running.

The moment I see you back away from this line, I wipe you all away. So even if he gets a name on the ballot in the early states, I would wait to say beyond a doubt. He may be the head of the platform committee. He may free up Howard Dean to run for the Congress.

Really, he has juice and he has a mission. I am interested in seeing what happens next.

and he's a Democrat. Governor Dean lives a few blocks away from me, in the same city precinct (it's his legal residence, this I know because he's voted at my polling place in the most recent elections). I doubt he'd take on Leahy or Sanders in the Senate, either.

Unless Gov. Dean moves to another state and takes up legal residency there, he won't be in Congress anytime soon.

Sorry, Goreians. He's not running for President again. Why would he?

I respect Gore for his newly found position as Climate Change Guru of Planet Earth. Really, I do. If he'd run for President on that issue in 2000, I would have voted for him. Now, he's recognized WORLD-WIDE as a leader, while Bush is UNIVERSALLY ridiculed. That's strong.

Why would he want to give that up and dive into the cesspool of American presidential politics?

Let's face the truth here: Being POTUS come 2008 is gonna be a LIABILITY rather than an ASSET.

Again: I respect Gore's stance. He WON'T run. He's in a much better place now.

132. Slowly up the other side of the roller coaster I go . . .
geez, I was just getting comfortable with his not running. In my mind I just sadly let it go. I'm up, down, now with this post, I'm getting all excited again!

It's OK Al, I don't mind. I happen to love roller coasters.

Please run for Pres again!!!

:bounce: Gore44 :bounce:

I think it might be possible that Al definitely plans to run, but was not planning to run in 08. I think perhaps his work with Climate Change isn't finished. But I hope he sees that we can't wait another 4 or 8 years for him to decide. We need him now. :-(

134. Gore has my vote and my money, Bar none.
I like these 3 points especially:

1. We should get out of Iraq as quickly as practicable;
2. Universal, single-payer health care for all Americans; and
3. The need for new protections for all Americans from governmental spying.

I'm working on Assault on Reason

:grouphug:

I still don't think he's running.

However, I'm writing him in twice.

Once in the primaries, once in the general.

Got my voter registration card at the ready!

I cannot argue with a single one of his important issues. he could get 70% of the popular vote and nearly all the electoral college. He would get Florida based on the health care stance alone, not to mention Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan, New Mexico, New York, California, he could win most if not all of the deep south (especially against a "big city" NYC guy). think of how much less shit we would take from our bosses were health insurance a right, not just something one had to pay for on their own or depend on their employer to pay for.

135. Forget this fantasy.
I would love to see Gore run but, I am completely convinced he will not do it with Hillary in the race. I do not believe Gore would run against her.
Gore has enough good character to keep from ruining his friend's chances at a great victory.
I would love to be wrong. Time will tell.
Just if anyone would want to guess the future, I am thinking, Hillary will get the nomination and select Bill Richardson as her running mate. The only hope other Democrats have is if Edwards and Obama make an agreement to run together, and do it quickly. That is the only hope I see for the Hillary train to get derailed.
Richardson will be Hillary's choice to pull Hispanic and southern votes from the Republicans. Once again, it will look like African-Americans will be taken for granted by the Democratic Party and Obama will be off the ticket. Again, I would love to be wrong, but, again, time will show if this comes true.

Was Lieberman his friend? Is that why he endorsed Howard Dean over Lieberman in 2004? Maybe Gore isn't a person to become friends with if one is expecting political favors from that friendship? :D

I hope this is right. It all makes sense, and for the first time since 2000 it might actually give me a little bit of hope for this country.

Circumventing the media and what controls it, circumventing the mudslinging and the garbage and the nonsense of political campaigning... doing something different, thinking differently, finding a better way to do things and quietly doing them. A stealth campaign, right under everyone's nose. Not politicking, not campaigning, not making promises and not self-promoting... just walking the walk and leading by example.

Beautiful!

Edited on Tue Oct-16-07 06:46 AM by RestoreGore
Whatever they be. But it figures coming from the same people who did nothing but harass him in 2004 until he turned them down. Is that really ALL some can think about here? I suppose it is, but in the process does anyone ever think of him? This is EXACTLY the same title based on nothing of fact I would expect to see in that MSM you all trash, tied to the launch of an innovative tv station that
offers so much more but gets no mention. So don't even try to explain this. It is blatant pushing. If you can't discuss his efforts based on their merits without infusing this baseless political speculation hype, then I think those who can't do so need to reflect a bit on what it is exactly that they "support." Unless of course, they are just political operatives doing their "jobs." And perhaps he now knows that too which is why he keeps that door ajar just a little for those who can't seem to think of anything in any other context. See, I can "speculate" too. He got a lot of new "members" yesterday who more than likely will not even participate unless it is to go on those threads and push him some more. How "supporting" to his goals of bringing back that "two way Democracy" that is actually one way to syncophants here. Either run or we don't support you. That is the overwhelming impression left on these blogs and I for one think it is sad when he may just be trying to move away from that hoping we would just talk to him.

243. Did you ever want or encourage him to run in 2004, and if you did
was that harassment?

Also the dysfunctional corporate media, the Iraq War, the Global Warming crisis, the trashing of the Constitution, torture, illegal wiretapping, etc. independent of Al Gore running for President have indeed been discussed many times on this website,if you haven't noticed it's because you haven't looked.

The growing calls for Al Gore to run or be drafted is nothing but a common sense realization among many that he is the best qualified person for the single most important job in land that could alleviate or eliminate those abuses or threats to the people of the United States and the rest of Earth. This being a political website one would think to expect people debating, encouraging, cheering, cajoling or just begging for the rest to support who they believe to be the best qualified person for the job, I'm amazed you find that surprising.

As I've said before it's not over until it's over but if you want to quit and just leave the Presidency to whoever, because you think the system is broken and everybody that supports the person they believe is best qualified for the job are nothing but sycophants, have at it, I'm sure things will get better.

While I agree on one point regarding the title of the thread, it's really doesn't matter to you what the title is, if someone starts most any thread trying to drum up support for an Al Gore Presidency, your day isn't complete unless you can rain on it, that's my speculation.

And all the speculation and backbiting and competing with BS polls numbers between him and Clinton now is very OLD here. Here he is now a Nobel laureate with a world platform for change, and all we get from this venue is the same gossipy Bs. That is not where he is now and that is evident from his own words and his actions. But continue to live in your own world and continue to sit out all that is happening with his organizations that are unimportant to the syncophants here while you and others sit here dreaming. I intend to live in the here and now and look to the future supporting this good man without getting involved in all the same old crap he left behind and you all obviously have not.

sorry to burst your little status-quo-loving bubble, but there is no way in hell that Gore wouldn't beat the other side's "best" candidate by a landslide. Who is their "best," anyway? Ghouli9/11ani? Dogcatcher Romney?

He won the popular vote in 2000--I'm sure that a large majority of those who already voted for him, as well as those who voted for Nader, will not vote for him again :eyes:

only in your dreams would Gore not win, and by a huge margin.

253. I read what was posted here.....
and unless the rest of the article contains the information that Gore formally announced his candidacy then my statement stands. The title was misleading.

When I read "I believe Al Gore is now running for president" I realized that the article stated an opinion and not a fact. Someone being OF THE OPINION that Gore is running is not fact, it's an opinion. Nothing more.

If you choose to spend your time speculating that's fine but I'll wait to see if Gore actually declares himself a candidate.

196. I think I just had a Goregasm.
He's said that he doesn't like the way the campaigns and election cycles are run. This is definitely his chance to usher in a new era of thinking about elections and campaigns. A new era of thinking is what this man has been about for some time. I think he has a real opportunity to do more than just be President. He has the opportunity to change the way Americans expect their candidates to respond and act in the public forum.

201. don't wake me up..it is a marvelous dream..of Al and Tipper in the White House..
Edited on Mon Oct-15-07 11:57 PM by flyarm
I see in my dream Tipper with the White House Xmas tree..and the easter egg roll..and Al with the official Turkey..a real one unlike the idiot now ho had a fake turkey in Iraq..and i am dreaming in Technicolor of Al bringing the troops home..and him standing waiting all the flights coming in with our soldiers on them..and i am dreaming of Al Gore with builders and architects rebuilding New Orleans..and the people of the Gulf Coast getting new homes of which they can finally go on with their lives..like they should have long before now..i am dreaming of Gitmo being closed..and i am dreaming of my kids Habeas Corpus rights restored..and the spying on Americans stopped and exposed..

and more than anything i am dreaming of Albert Gore taking the oath of office with Tipper and their family by his side..like he should have been in 2000..i am dreaming he is getting what he rightly earned the first time..

and i am dreaming of seeing Al and Tipper walking into the white house as bush and cheney are being marched out with hand cuffs on!

please..do not wake me..it is the most wonderful dream i have had in 7 years...

and you know what my biggest dream is???..that Al Gore reopens the 9/11 inquiry,..a real investigation..one with teeth ..that will expose the real reasons my co-workers were killed on 9/11.

I dream of a world that has reason to trust my nation again..and who respects us again..and a world who likes us again.

marvelous dream/..that i will not give up until Al Gore either throws his hat into the race ..or he says he will not under any circumstances will run and throws his endorsement to another candidate.

i am going to take a sleeping pill..so i can have this dream continue!!..

He gets to say what he he wants, he gets to say it when he wants to say it, he gets plenty of exposure for whatever he says, people take him seriously because he's "not running," he doesn't get attacked because he's "not running" and he doesn't have to follow FEC rules... well, until he files at the last possible moment.

He is organized to the point that he has mounted a media campaign without buying a single ad. He won the nobel prize, if he announced he could win the primaries without doing a campaign. Then he would get the Democratic party money for the presidential run.

221. Time is running out ......
I have been paying attention to Al Gore's work, speeches and statements over the past few months (and years) and I think it is now extremely unlikely that Al Gore will suddenly announce that he has decided to be a candidate for the 2008 Presidential election.

I watched the video clips on Current.com and I don't think they indicate he is preparing a run for the Whitehouse. What he is saying on Iraq is exactly what he said to Larry King on CNN back in May 2007. See http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0705/22/lkl.01.h...

When asked directly about 2008, Gore makes it clear that he has no plans to be a candidate.

Al Gore interviewed for 01238 Magazine - Sept-Oct 2007

A recent poll shows that if you entered the presidential race, you would handily win the New Hampshire primary. Isnt that tempting?

GORE: Sure. But I am old enough and have been a candidate enough times to have a very high level of resistance to temptations of that sort. I trust my instincts, and it doesnt feel like its the right thing for me.

But if you believe global warming is such a crisis, wouldnt you be more effective within the White House than outside it?

GORE: Im under no illusion that theres any position in the world as influential as that of president. But it doesnt feel like the right thing for me to be a candidate at this point. I have had the experience of seeing how necessary it is to have adequate support among the people as a whole for the dramatic policy changes that are needed. It may well be that the best use of whatever skills and talents and experiences that I have gained is to concentrate on creating that sea change in mass opinion about this issue, so that whoever is elected will face a groundswell from the people themselves.

Will you endorse a candidate in the primary?

GORE: Odds are that I will.

Who?

GORE: I havent made that decision yet.

http://www.02138mag.com/magazine/article/1485.html

I think that Al Gore wants to influence the debate over the next 12 and 1/2 months, leading up to the Presidential election. I think he will be an important and valuable supporter of the Democratic ticket, and an asset to the campaign of our eventual nominee. He is on the record as promising he will support the Democratic nominee in 2008 (as he has always done).

It's a shame that he is not running because in many ways he is the best person for the job.

But I think we should respect his decision and support his efforts to influence the national debate on the climate crisis and a whole range of issues.

224. Here is what we know about Al Gore's plans ...
November 27-29 - Al will be in England to address the "Leaders in London" Conference.

December 10th - Al will be in Norway to collect his Nobel Peace Prize.

January 22nd - Al will be in Sweden to receive the "Gothenburg Sustainable Development Award".

April 2008 - Al will bring out his next book "The Path To Survival".

None of this is really compatible with taking part in the Democratic primaries.

Many states have filing deadlines in early November (Michigan on October 23rd).

When I find myself in times of trouble, mother Mary comes to me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree,
there will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted there is still a chance that they will see,
there will be an answer. let it be.

Let it be, let it be, .....

And when the night is cloudy, there is still a light, that shines on me,
shine until tomorrow, let it be.
I wake up to the sound of music, mother Mary comes to me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be, .....

283. My dear RG, in spirit, you are one of the worst environmental activists
I have ever seen. Your negativity and raging entreaties toward a self-imagined positive goal reek of failure, and other problems one can only speculate upon. Your essential inability to inspire others to anything at all is pitiful.

Your goal to enlighten is one of the most perverted I have ever seen here at DU, and quite possibly anywhere else.

There are people in the world who live in the streets, who have had their health destroyed, who struggle mightily to get through a day. who live in poverty and despair and physical pain despite their best efforts, as well as individuals who live in slavery of every kind.

Your self-assured arrogance is getting to be stomach-turning. If you can lead, go do it. We're all happy for the life you have, go do some good with it for a change.

And please, don't give a tedious list of credits, your self-aggrandizing words are becoming more worthless by the hour.

I didn't vote for Gore because I thought he was just like Bill Clinton. I didn't pay attention to politics and voted for Nader. Quite honestly, I thought Gore would win anyway because Bush* was such a LOSER! Boy did I start to pay attention after that.

Now that I watch Gore, I think he is truly Presidential material. Actually, I think he's too good. But if he runs, he has my vote for all the 3 major reasons mentioned in the OP. End this stupid war, REAL healthcare reform, and bring back the rights of American citizens. Not only that, he's a true environmentalist. He'd be a good leader who would restore honor to this country.

I'll vote for him, I'll work for his campaign, and I'll donate money when able.

I hope this writer is correct. If so, Gore is brilliant.

275. In 2000, Lieberman
was not radioactive, as he has become since he revealed his idiocy on foreign policy in 2002. I think Gore did it in part as a concession to the DLC, which he broke with to run a populist campaaign against big business.

Bottom line, it was a choice that probably helped him slightly in winning the 2000 election. Lieberman contributed somewhat to the big convention bounce Gore received.

280. lieberman was supposed to be the "restore dignity" part
in order to counter all the "what will we tell the children" part

(psssst... here's what you tell the children- all people are human, especially presidents. don't idolize those in power. people make mistakes and we have to look at others within the entire context of their lives. Then the kids say... what are you talking about? If the kids are older, you say, Henry Kissinger said power is an aphrodesiac. Handling the power you have responsibly is the most important task of your life. Then the kids say... blowjob. Sounds like some of the parties I've heard about after school. If the kids are even older, you say... blowjob. what else is new? The kids say, can we change the subject, please???)

I really detest Lieberman. If Gore chose Obama as a running mate, he would be making history in many ways. Or if he chose Feingold. (I REALLY like Feingold.) But Obama could help to smack down the racists in the south and bring out the African-American voter. Oh how I would LOVE to see that. I would LOVE to see the look on the Repuke party face as their attempts to disenfranchise voters died.

I would gladly vote early and serve as a poll watcher, etc. to stop voter intimidation in the south, or elsewhere, for that matter. A run from him would allow dem strategists to show that fake Dade county riot... they should bring a copy just in case the media won't run the picture. Would bring the issue of voter fraud out where the repukes can't stand to have it.

Yeah, I wish he would run too.
