Navy offering up to $90,000 to re-enlist
Navy offering up to $90,000 to re-enlist
By Jeff Schogol, Stars and Stripes
Mideast edition, Sunday, October 7, 2007

ARLINGTON, Va. — The Navy is offering re-enlistment bonuses of up to $90,000 for sailors such as Explosive Ordnance Disposal technicians and special warfare operators.

The move is one of several changes to the Navy’s Selective Re-enlistment Bonus program that were outlined in a recent Navywide message.

Sailors are paid the bonuses based on a formula that includes their time in the Navy and an award multiple to determine how much money they can get.

The increase in re-enlistment bonuses for EOD technicians and special warfare operators is meant to keep sailors with critical skills, said Master Chief John Siegel, technical adviser for the EOD rating.

1. This is one thing if it was done in a Free Nation.
It is quite another when done in a Totalitarian Nation like Imperial Amerika.

Odious, grotesque, blood money to get the suckers to line up to be treated like a rich kid's toys a month after Christmas.

:puke:

12. Ummm . . .
Doesn't the fact that they are free NOT to re-enlist if they don't want to put the lie to the whole "Totalitarian Nation" thingy??

13. No. We are in mid-transition from what we were to what we will one day be.
I believe fewer and fewer soldiers are free to not enlist nowadays, anyway.

It's called stop-loss. It's called tours without reasonable rest between. Maybe you've read about it.

I'll say it for the millionth time, we are dealing with a New Totalitarianism, a new form, a kinder and gentler form, which is the only kind that could be in the former United States of America. It so camoflauges itself and poeple refuse to see it and name it, so it has no name.

We have only gone 40% of the way, and one cannot predict how the final 60% of the transition will go, except to say that it will do anything to camoflauge itself and keep people doubting as long as possible.

By the time the soldiers literally are 100% unable to get out of the Arnmed Forces, it will be way too late.

Please to read these two links, as well as the link in my sigline, for more understanding of my point and why I feel so strongly about this, and why I feel the Bushies are merely another manifestation of the same totalitarianism in a new form.

and many, a few years shy of their 20, were forced into the army or marine corps.

Hell, submariners have been dying in the desert.

4. "submariners have been dying in the desert..."
No way! Tell me this is a joke.

I was a submariner and if they thought they could take me out of my boat, put a gun in my hand and *presto* I'd be infantry then they'd suddenly have a gay, joint-smoking soldier on their hands.

USS Skate

6. My sentiments exactly! Why leave the security of the maneuvering room for heat and dust and get
at? No way, bro! I didn't suffer under Hyman Rickover for 6 years to pound sand!
Can you imagine a bunch of submariners with a bunch of grunts? "What is the matter with you you lousy nonqual! I am trying to get in a nooner before going on watch!" or "What do you mean, on duty for days at a time, back on the Usedtafish I had 4 section duty and my only collateral duty was to recopy the MTS logs when we did an alignment. . ." or even better, "What is the movie tonight? I am getting tired of the Grateful Dead Movie!"

Submarines once, submarines twice . . .

9. And when you think of how much it costs to train bubbleheads....
but the Bush Administration has killed the sub force, AND the navy. It was Bush that suggested we go down to 35 attack boats. NOT Clinton.

7. According to Bill Clinton, it is no joke!
Last week during a tv interview I heard President Clinton say that Navy personnel are getting infantry training and are serving in Iraq.

I'm trying hard to remember what show and who the interviewer was.

8. Cdr. Matthew-Sweet, most senior naval officer since Vietnam...
was killed in Iraq last spring. His funeral at Arlington was a big deal.

They have, on occasion, given sub sailors three days of firearm training at Ft. Bragg and had them doing security for convoys. An instructor at sub school made a stink about refusing to be sent to do electronics in Iraq. The 'blue to green' program has also been a way of forcing sailors who want to get their 20 in, to 'go green' if they want their retirement.

USS Skate was a neat boat...

So was this one...

18. Nice boat
If you were on it, you saw a few more liberty ports.

I can remember pulling into Yokosuka to repair a singing screw only to find out that there were protesters at the front gate. They knew we were a nuclear boat and thought we were carrying nuclear weapons. And New Zealand stopped allowing any nuclear vessels into their ports.

I always thought the best diesel boat to serve on would have been the USS Barbell.

Hell, I still take submarine showers and yell "Water buffalo" at my wife (also a Navy vet) if she takes too long in the shower. :)

28. Yep, we were trained to take 'sea showers'...
that's dad sitting on the left and, later - RAdm Brad Mooney standing on the conning tower. Dad always hated heights, so he made Brad do the standing.

Yes, the smoke boats had far better liberty. But Skate was a neat boat to be on.

Many good friends in the service. This region lives and breathes the Silent Service. I can't understand why we send good Naval officers and sailors to the desert.

3. That's a nice improvement.
Our military is grossly underpaid, and that is one way to compensate for it. The bonus was only $30,000 for my particular skill set when I was ready to get out, but money was not a deciding factor for me; I knew I could do better for myself on the outside, and I have.

29. Most of them will never see a dime of that bonus
The military will find a technicality after they re-up to exclude most of them from getting the money.

30. Where do you come up with an idea like that?
It's kinda hard to wiggle out of a contract that says, "We will give you $xx,000 for signing on this line." You sign the line, you get the cash.

Everyone I know who signed up for an SRB got it with no problems. Have you heard of someone who didn't?

31. You have got to be kidding me.
Sorry but Google is your friend. There are just so many cases out there of the military screwing soldiers out of bonus money that is breathtaking. - 279 day deployments instead of 280 day deployments to get out of paying educational bennies - wounded disabled soldiers being sued to pay back enlistment bonuses PLUS having to fight tooth and nail to get the bare minimum of medical care. -- delay, deny and hope they die disability claims processing on wounded vets.

Soldiers these days have MANY reasons to distrust their bosses and they choose to serve their country anyway. God Bless them, because the US Gov't likely won't.

32. Nope, not kidding. :)
I was in the Navy (which IS the subject of this post), and everyone I saw reenlist for a bonus got a bonus.

The 279 educational benefits you mention have nothing to do with a reenlistment bonus.
