Why would poor anti-abortion Republics vote for Giuliani rather than the Dem candidate?
It's lose-lose for them regarding abortion. And they will be totally screwed economically if Giuliani gets in.

1. Because they are incapable of rational, logical thought...

2. If they're looking at survival, and ideology is taken out of the mix,
I bet they'll get logical real fast.

5. Only if they are listened to, and the party... you and I, start taking them seriously.

6. I take them seriously.
John Edwards has been very outspoken about the need to address poverty. All of the Dem candidates would certainly roll back the horrendous tax breaks for the ultra rich, and distribute tax breaks more equitably, tax to better fund education, health care, and social programs. As much at fault as our candidates are, they are worlds better than any of the Rethugs.

9. Glad you do. I didn't mention Edwards, because I didn't want to make it a "partisan" statement.
He's the ONLY one including poor people in his campaign. How's that for sad?

You will see all kinds of replies to your post about how stooooopid poor people are, and voting against their best interests, etc. BUT... what it really comes down to is that the party turned it's collective back on poor people many years ago.

The only way to change that is to LISTEN to poor people!

Telling them the same old thing, that Dems will do more, without LISTENING to us, and without really coming to us and standing with us, is just so much more taking us for granted, and it's not working. You're asking poor people to TRUST that the Dem will do more... we have run out of blind trust!

As for "better fund.... social programs", PLEASE remember it was Clinton who did away with welfare.

I can guarantee you that poor people haven't forgotten that.

Especially survivors and friends of those who suffered and died because they lost welfare!

3. Because Rudy kept 'those' people in their place when he was Mayor of NYC
And he talks about how we need to kill brown people who believe in the wrong God over there so they don't come here.

Never underestimate the extent that racism motivates the GOP base. It and misogyny are the basis for all of their beliefs.

4. WHY? What are "Dem candidates" saying about poverty? How many are talking TO POOR PEOPLE???
Yes, I know.... DUers will love to paint all poor people as stoooopid.

BUT... think about it... Just what is the Dem party, as a whole, actually saying to poor people?

WHERE is poverty in the national party conversation?

WHY would anyone vote for someone who isn't even talking to them?

There is still time for the national party to direct their attention to poor people, and stop taking them for granted, or discounting them.

It's your choice.

7. Socially conservative Catholics will drop him like a stone...
I grew up Catholic in a socially conservative area. A lot of people at my church voted Republican for one reason and one reason only: abortion. However, when it came to other issues of policy, such as economic issues, they did not toe the corporatist Republican line.

If Republicans nominate a candidate like Rudy who favors abortion rights, look to see a lot of the single issue voters on abortion either abstain or maybe even contemplating voting Democrat.

8. Democrats are good for the economy
Edited on Thu Oct-04-07 10:37 AM by Rambis
and when the economy is good for everyone less abortions happen. So it makes sense to support the party where less abortions happen. Staunchly pro choice!

10. just because
Yesterday on Madison radio this issue was discussed on the conservative program opposite Randy and a number of Christian Conservatives called to say they would vote for Rudy in order to stop Hillary-- remember conservatives like strong men images- white images- and will hold their close beliefs in hind to elect that image if they have to.

11. Because he's a Republican
Edited on Thu Oct-04-07 11:48 AM by Prophet 451
First off, you've got the 20% or so of the electorate who would vote for Jack The Ripper if he had an (R) after his name. It wouldn't matter if teh Dems ran Jesus Christ, they'd still vote for the other guy (and Faux Noise would run a special asserting that the crucifixion was faked).

Secondly, many of them don't understand economics. All they know or care about is their taxes, nothing else.

The brighter thinkers will assume that Rudy will be constrained in his views on abortion by the right-wing of the Republican party (almost the entire Republican party these days).

Oh, and assuming the Dem candidate is Hillary, the right hate her with such a frothing murderous passion that they would vote for Hitler if he stood against her. As much as the Repubs dislike most of the Dem candidates, they hate Hillary more than Hitler, Bill Clinton and Judas Iscariot combined. If I were Hillary and I were nominated, I'd wear a bullet-proof vest to every public appearence.
