Poll question: What's the CLOSEST relationship you've ever had with a loyal Republican?
I tried to put these in order of close-ness--if the answer is more than one of these, pick the HIGHEST on the list.

40. I slip sometimes and call my SO a Repug
and we both get a good laugh out of that. My SO is actually more liberal than I am in a lot of ways -- how many Repugs do you know who go to Burning Man every year -- when I have never even had a chance to go yet!?

It's just a matter of conditioning, IMO, with my SO. All of my in-laws are Repubs, or so they think they are. They all vote Dem, they're all pro-choice. It's hard to explain -- it's like trying to let go of that old t-shirt you used to where all the time: It's beat to hell but you just can't bear to part with it for some damned reason.

Yes, my closest human being, my brother, is quite the loyal republican.

We have a good time every time we get together. It's kind of like GD on a Saturday night.

29. All you are showing is how closed-minded and limited you are
I guess you need to get out more, or expand your education, or your social circle.

MOST of us know and love at least one (R).

If your world holds no such challenges within the context of love and understnding, is that a good thing? I think not.

32. All you are showing is that you don't know me at all.
MOST of us apparently DON'T know any rethugs and don't care to, as I am also one of 'us' here at DU.

As soon as the rethugs stop killing Iraqi's and American soldiers and stop being so greedy as to
oppose children having health care, then I might chill but until that day, don't hold your breath!

5. A friend for 16 years. But,
I will not discuss politics with him. If he brings it up, I go silent until he talks about some other subject. We find other relatively non-political things to talk about. But it really puts a limit on the friendship. I am always secretly holding that against him.

15. Is there an entry for "casual, brief sexual relationship in college"?
There was a young woman in my dorm that I got together with a few times- she was beautiful, and had a real Earthy, granola vibe, so I was real fuckin' surprised to see her walking down the hall one day not long after we had had our fling, wearing a pro Ollie North t-shirt. I thought for sure it had to be a joke, but sadly, she was serious.

I ran into her several years later.. I think by then she had her head screwed on right.

16. I'm married to one. But don't condemn her too quickly.
She despises Bush, thinks the war is awful, and quite rightly, all Bush's fault. She is appalled by the state of our country these days, not to mention the state Iraq is in, and she likes both Barack Obama and Al Gore. Just not enough to vote for either of them.

She's a Republican because "they're anti-abortion..."

21. All in-laws on my husband's side...
But they aren't Mensa members to say the least. Some fine examples below.

These folks are all in their mid to late 50's.

Sister-in-law #1 : "I don't care how many countries we have to bomb as long as they don't come over here."

Sister-in-law #2: "I won't vote for Kerry because he is 'wishy-washy' on the issues." When pressed for an example: "I can't come up with one right now, but I know he is."

Sister-in-law #3: "Do you have to cook chicken before you use it for chicken salad?" <--- Really said that. No need to elaborate further.

I would sooner shoot myself than listen to any of them talk about current affairs....and that's just the womenfolk. I don't even want to talk about their husbands.

28. K&R. My mom. I love her, and I refuse to make excuses or apologize for her.
She is an outstandingly good person, LOVED by any decent person who has spent even a bit of time with her.

She would give anything to anyone. She wants only to make you laugh and feel at home. She wants you to feel loved.

The complications of the last six or seven decades are confusing to her, so she calls herself a republican but she votes with her heart, so anyone who seeks to demonize her can just step off.

36. All my close family are republicans
My parents are republicans, though my Mom's more moderate, she used to be a democrat until my Dad got her to switch over.

My older brother is definitely a big religious republican.

My younger brother seems to be more moderate, he'll jump in on criticizing both parties in areas (like dumb things GOP religious fanatics say, environmentalists who believe in global warming, out of control Labor Unions that demand stuff like pay raises when a business is badly in debt and going bankrupt).

I know one of my grandmothers is definitely antiBush and has been voting against his party lately. My other grandmother just votes on who she likes more (which seems to be whoever she thinks is prettier). Not sure about the rest of my family.

Edited on Wed Oct-03-07 01:53 AM by policypunk
but these are Orange County old fashioned republicans who are pretty harmless and liberal by any modern standard, they are still fighting Nixon's battles, they HATE southerners and they hate Bush. They just hold out hope that their financial clout will be able to swing the party back to economic interests instead of southern christian bullshit.

But he is a real conservative ala Barry Goldwater and hasn't voted for a Republican since Nixon's first term. He's now more of a Libertarian. I think the only person he will vote for now is Ron Paul.
