I often write based on my own life, because I know it pretty well :)
Tonight showed me some things in a more refined light, about our goal and mission.
I popped in to check on my daughter. She and my wife were sitting in her bed reading a story before bed time. It was a beautiful thing to see them both sitting there in the light, a smile on their faces.
I went out and sat on the couch to watch some dumb tv shows. A short spell later the wife came out and said "You won't believe what she just asked me."
Oh boy - probably something about what some kid said to her at school today or something, and I was hoping there were no bees or birds involved.
No. It was worse.
"Mommy, when will you not be sick anymore?" My wife tried to explain that she would not get better, but that she has medications. She just did not understand.
So I poured me a drink and pondered this, you can't shield her forever.
And then it fell into place for me about this country and what we are up against - and no, not talking health care.
bush is but one brick in a pyramid of problems, an edifice built on pessimism, hate, war, lies.
What we face my friends is not an illness. It is a disease.
I am sure the scientists working to cure Parkinson's have their fights - only so much funding and lab space, so maybe we should explore avenue X over Y. I am sure it gets heated.
And there is us. We see that there is a disease, and it is we who want to find the cure and heal this sickness in our country.
We DO know that for now it cannot be eradicated, only fought while the cure is made. And even when we FIND a cure, it will take a long time for the body to heal.
We here all want the same things, but like those scientists we don't always agree which route to put our resources in. Each one may make some headway, but overall a cure is a way off.
We won't die unless we give up - and every little bit we do keeps us alive and healing. Every little step we take that pushes back this disease gets us closer to a cure - and it will be a cocktail of drugs and debates.
My daughter is sad her mommy is sick. And we are all sad our Lady Liberty is near collapsing and we ask ourselves 'when will she get better?'
She will my friends, and every vote, phone call, snail mail, email, research, post, etc helps give her a transfusion and keeps her going while the cure is worked on to finally bring her back to the stature she once held.
America, she is sick - and we are her only health care.
