Democrats failing to pass anti-war bill

By ANNE FLAHERTY
Associated Press Writer

President Bush

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democrats are unable to pass legislation that would challenge President Bush on the Iraq war, despite public opinion polls that show the war remains deeply unpopular with voters.

Failing to muster the support, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says the war now belonged to Republicans and vowed they would have to go on record again and again as siding with President Bush. He scheduled a vote Friday on legislation by Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., that would order combat troops home in nine months.

"Back home they assert their independence, but in Washington they walk in lockstep with the president and continue to support his failed policies," said Reid, D-Nev.

Friday's vote caps off a week of disappointing roll calls for the Democrats, who had hoped that more Republicans would have jumped on board by now.

2. Gee, it's kinda hard to say the repubs own the war, when
AP headlines say the dems couldn't get it passed, instead of the repubs blocked it.

3. Gee, it's kinda hard to make your arguement
When the Dems have the Constitutional power to hold up each and every supplemental war funding bill in committee, defund the war and force the troops home. No voting needed.

5. In wartime the president can move money around despite wording appropiation bills-not funding troops
is one sure way of giving the GOP control of Congress and the Presidency for the next few generations.

6. I suggest that you go back and recheck that little detail
Once money has been earmarked and appropriated, the president can't do shit. Bush isn't omnipotent yet, and if he tried to touch appropriated money he'd be in deep shit, much of it from his own party.

Go read your Constitution, study basic Civics and stop making up excuses for Democratic inaction.

8. And look what happened
The Iran Contra hearings, and a sharp reigning in of Reagan's spending. Your point?

9. Sigh -Nixon signed Gulf of Tonkin repeal 1/71 - we left 4 years later. Reagan signed Boland 12/8/82
and we never left.

Iran Contra hearings were not about Boland, but in any case a Bush pardon made a joke of those hearings and subsequent court cases. The current USSC judges were the ones that said Boland can not be inforced because of Presidents "war powers".

Nothing has ever been done by budget action that has affected a war - ever.
