Who to call in the Senate for tomorrow's habeas corpus restoration vote
Edited on Tue Sep-18-07 03:43 PM by swag
(note: Freepers who are interested in Constitutional rights are also encouraged to call in support of the Restore Habeas Corpus Act).

from Christy Hardin Smith:

Please keep calling. I am told the cloture vote has been scheduled for 10:30 am ET on Wednesday — as in tomorrow.

Thanks so much to everyone who has been making calls this morning to support S.Amend. 2202 — the Restore Habeas Corpus Act. More information here. We need to keep those calls to every single Senator going today. Your help is needed, because a vote is schedule for as early as tomorrow on this.

I’m hearing that the switchboard is tied up, so I’m providing this link: through it you can find direct dial numbers for every Senator on the Hill. Also, you can try the following toll free numbers to connect you with the switchboard:

1 (800) 828 - 0498
1 (800) 459 - 1887
1 (800) 614 - 2803
1 (866) 340 - 9281
1 (866) 338 - 1015
1 (877) 851 - 6437

Every single Senator needs to hear from their constituents today. Word is that Sen. Lindsey Graham has threatened to mount a filibuster of this bill — nice way to stand up for basic human rights, there, Huckleberry — so it is essential that your Senators hear from you today. Cloture has been filed on the Amendment — so we need 60 votes to move it forward. Here are some Senators that I’m hearing could use some extra persuasion today, because it looks like the vote on cloture is coming up as early as Wednesday (as in tomorrow):

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT)
Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE)
Sen. John Warner (R-VA)
Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE)
Sen. Richard Lugar (R-IN)
Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID)
Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME)
Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME)
Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN)
Sen. George Voinovich (R-OH)
Sen. John Sununu (R-NH)
Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA)
Sen. Gordon Smith (R-OR)
Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN)
Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN)
Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-AR)
Sen. Ken Salazar (D-CO)
Sen. Mark Pryor (D-AR)
Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI)

3. I can begin calling in 25 minutes
I hope that's not an omen of his vote from Senator Smith. Perhaps he just hired poorly?

4. I think he's just getting hammered on the phone by consituents.
I went to http://gsmith.senate.gov and filled out his little webform just to reinforce the message.

On a related note of "who do you call in the Senate...?":

That University of Florida guy that got torture/tasered by the cops "called" out for help to a U.S. Senator and an auditorium full of people, but the U.S. Senator payed no attention at all to the fact that the guy was screaming for help as the Senator answered the question while the U of Florida guy was screaming for help! Amazing!

12. Called Sen. Bayh's office.
I was told that they do not know what his stance is or how he'll vote. I asked him to urge the Senator to support the amendment. I hope he doesn't let us down on this one.

14. This might help a bit
http://restore-habeas.org/whip/total.php

In Gordon Smith's case, he's facing a very tough re-election fight in 2008, he has taken no position on the act as of yet, and hearing from his discontented constituency is likely to persuade him to at least consider doing the right thing.

18. One of mine is a firm no. May a vulture poop on Cornyn's head tomorrow
However, to my great surprise, Hutchinson was undecided. I may have actually done some good.

I've spread this around the other Texas political forums I post on.

Unsurprisingly, Lindsey Graham is leading the charge against our rights by threatening filibuster.

20. Don't know how late they all work up there.
Kind of late, some of 'em.

If you can't call, how about at least visiting a web page or two and hitting that "Contact Me" link and filling out a little web form.

Or save up and call in the morning.

23. Last ditch
www.senate.gov will eventually guide you to a feedback form for any of these fence-sitters. (Gordon Smith of Oregon, on the list, is now for restoring habeas corpus!)

Hit those feedback forms, call when you get up, and get us back one of our most fundamental rights!

28. Target list (from Christy Hardin Smith)
Every single Senator needs a call today, regardless of whether they are on the target lists. Here are some Senators that I’m hearing could use some extra persuasion before the vote today on habeas:
