Terror suspect released after he’s found eyeing I-80 bridge

A man on a federal terror watch list was reported snapping pictures of the I-80 bridge over the Delaware Water Gap this week, then released after telling New Jersey state troopers he had stopped so his wife could feed their baby.

A New Jersey State Police spokesman, Sgt. Gerald Lewis, said troopers were called at 10:44 a.m. Monday about a "suspicious person taking pictures" of the interstate bridge, about 100 miles north of Philadelphia.

Troopers found a man fitting the description, along with his wife and 6-week-old infant. Lewis said a trooper reported the man's identification to a state police operations center, where it was determined that the man was a "person of interest" on a federal terror watch list.

Lewis said further investigation revealed that the man wasn't doing anything suspicious. He had pulled off the interstate to allow his wife to feed the baby in an area he thought was safe, Lewis said.

New Jersey State Police Capt. Al Della Fave said the man did not have a camera and was simply looking at the bridge while his wife fed the baby.

"He said he was looking for a safe place to pull over so his wife could feed the baby," Della Fave said. "The trooper asked him, 'What about the pictures you were taking?' He said, 'What do you mean? I wasn't taking any pictures."'

The trooper received permission to search the man's car. No camera was found in the car or the surrounding area, police said.

"Just because someone's name is on a watch list doesn't mean you can arrest them if they're not doing anything wrong," Della Fave said.

1. "In an area he thought was safe"
No place in this country is safe any more. Our own government has seen to that.

2. Homeland security at the airport asked me once if I'd taken pictures of public buildings...
which are generally legitimate tourist attractions.

That this needs to be said out loud at all is a sad reflection of our current society.

The USSR, folks!

The United States of America just isn't its same old self any more. Sometimes I hardly recognize my own country.
