FRANKFORT, Ky. — On the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attack, the Kentucky National Guard announced the death of one of its soldiers in Iraq.

Pvt. 1st Class Sammie E. Phillips of Vine Grove, Ky., was killed yesterday when his vehicle overturned while conducting a traffic-control mission on a highway near Rustamiyah, Iraq.

Speaking to reporters after a brief service remembering the anniversary of 9/11, Kentucky Adj. Gen. Donald Storm told reporters: “Sammie Phillips, 19 years old, lived in Vine Grove, Ky. His wife is 19 years old. Just a tremendous young soldier that had just tremendous potential

4. That's just about 10 min. from where my Mom lives and less than 30 min. from Ft. Knox
Very small community. I'm sure many in town knew him.
