Petraeus: US is not arming former insurgents
Edited on Mon Sep-10-07 03:03 PM by sabra

Paraphrase from hearing:

Petraeus stated that 100's of AQ#2's have been killed/captures. 1000's AQ rank and file killed/captured. Petraeus was then asked if more terrorists are being created than killed. Petraeus responded by saying that the US is not arming former insurgents.

U.S. Arming Sunnis in Iraq to Battle Old Qaeda Allies

BAGHDAD, June 10 With the four-month-old increase in American troops showing only modest success in curbing insurgent attacks, American commanders are turning to another strategy that they acknowledge is fraught with risk: arming Sunni Arab groups that have promised to fight militants linked with Al Qaeda who have been their allies in the past.

An Iraqi Sunni 'volunteer', former insurgents who have joined forces with US and Iraqi troops against Al-Qaeda in Iraq, holds a knife to the neck of an Iraqi man detained by his fighters for links to Al-Qaeda and threatens to cut his throat, in the Hawra Haajab village on the southern outskirts of Baghdad, 06 September 2007. The former insurgent fighters supported by US troops succeeded in pushing Al-Qaeda fighters out of the village for the first time in nearly three years following a day long battle that saw more than 30 suspected Al-Qaeda operatives detained and at least four fighters killed, US military sources said. 5. Of course not. The US is arming CURRENT insurgents. Former insurgents are dead or in prison.

6. Excellent
and this could actually be going around in his head so he can appear to believe what he is saying. You may be closer to the actual mark of his thought than you think. For us, irony, for them a typical shiftiness that helps them lie.
