Lieberman Urges Leader Reid and Speaker Pelosi to Denounce Moveon.org Attack on General Petraeus
Lieberman Urges Leader Reid and Speaker Pelosi to Denounce Moveon.org Attack on General Petraeus

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senator Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) issued the following statement in response to the Moveon.org ad attacking General Petraeus in today's New York Times:

"The personal attack on Gen. David Petraeus launched today by Moveon.org is an outrageous and despicable act of slander that every member of the Congress -- Democrat and Republican -- has a solemn responsibility to condemn.

"General Petraeus has served his country honorably and selflessly for over thirty-five years. He has risked his life in combat and accepted lengthy deployments away from his family to defend our nation and its citizens from its enemies. For this, he deserves the respect, admiration, and gratitude of every American -- not the disgraceful slander of Moveon.org.

"It has been widely reported that Moveon.org has worked closely over the past months with many members of the Democratic Party in coordinating their efforts to derail the strategy that General Petraeus has been leading in Iraq.

"I do not know whether the Democratic leadership was consulted in any way or informed by Moveon about this personal, political attack on General Petraeus. That is not the point. The point is that when partisan political attacks which have already divided and weakened our nation in many ways are directed at a non-partisan, non-political commander like General Petraeus, everyone has a responsibility to shout, "Stop. Enough."

"As a member of the Senate Democratic caucus, I therefore call on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to denounce Moveon.org in no uncertain terms for its vile attack on Gen. Petraeus. General Petraeus deserves no less.

"Regardless of our disagreements on the way forward in Iraq, the claim that one of our most decorated and accomplished soldiers -- whom the Senate unanimously confirmed in his command -- would "betray" his country is an insult to the honor of all of our brave men and women in uniform who are fighting today in Iraq.

"As we debate our Iraq policy in the days ahead, we should leave no doubt that Democrats and Republicans stand united behind our troops and the commander who is leading them. We must reject the slander of this brave soldier and patriot."

4. They should do no such thing. Until the repugs apologize for what they
did to our hero's like Max Cleland and John Kerry we will never apologize for telling the truth. They lied and no one demanded they repent, we tell the truth and everyone is offended by it. Too Bad!

9. "non-partisan, non-political commander like General Petraeus"? Oh please.
I'll accept my responsibility to shout 'Enough'—at Lieberman's ridiculous concept that a military officer can't possibly be maneuvering to boost his career advancement by being political. LOL!

12. Is Joe really trying to blame the Democratic Party members of Hatch Act violations?
Does he really believe that MoveOn is piped into the Democratic Party and is getting marching orders from Harry Reid?

Joe why are you so afraid of the voice of American voters? MoveOn doesn't get big money from the likes of the Heritage Foundation, AEI, or Richard Scaife.

Oh yeah BTW Joe, quit conflating Petraeus and the American Military. Calling out the General, doesn't mean anything about how we feel about the troops. We are calling out yet another slimy politician who is using our troops to boost his own career. If Petraeus had any real leadership qualities he would resign his position rather than continue down this path that will tear apart our military for years to come. He can't possibly be that blind to what he's doing to the military.

15. Lieberman is either a liar or an idiot
Edited on Mon Sep-10-07 03:00 PM by atreides1
These staements are pure fiction, which makes Lieberman an idiot who lies!!!!!

He has risked his life in combat:

Although Petraeus did not see combat before his 2003 deployment to Iraq, he completed three overseas assignments short of war earlier in his career. In 1995, his Georgetown fellowship was cut short when he was assigned to the United Nations Mission in Haiti Military Staff as its Chief Military Operations Officer during Operation Uphold Democracy. Four years later, as assistant division commander for operations, he deployed with the 82nd Airborne Division to Kuwait as part of Operation Desert Spring, the continuous rotation of combat forces through Kuwait during the decade after the Gulf War.

During 2001-02, as a brigadier general, Petraeus served a ten-month tour in Bosnia-Herzegovina as part of Operation Joint Forge. In Bosnia, he was the NATO Stabilization Force Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations as well as the Deputy Commander of the U.S. Joint Interagency Counter-Terrorism Task Force, a command created after the September 11 attacks to add a counterterrorism capability to the U.S. forces attached to the NATO command in Bosnia.

...and accepted lengthy deployments away from his family to defend our nation and its citizens from its enemies:

I wasn't aware that the Haitians or Kuwaitis were enemies of the US, and with the exception of the above assigments he has spent most of his career either in the US or in Europe, and most if not all of those assignments his family was there with him, or just a short plane rider away.

And now Lieberman wants to silence Free Speech, you know for someone who claims to be such a "patriotic" American, he sure likes to resort to pissing on the US Constitution when things don't go his way.

Senator Lieberman, go bugger yourself!!!!!!

16. This will be the RW mock outrage topic of the day
Pelosi & Reid will get calls and letters from Dittoheads, and their ilk, urging them to apologize.

the media will join in about this and by this time Wednesday, at least one of them will have at least distanced themselves from MoveOn.

22. don't forget, a few years back
the mock outrage over two member-submitted ads - out of THOUSANDS of submissions - that compared Bush to Hitler. MoveOn took the offending ads down fairly quickly because of the amount of mock outrage.

Meanwhile, we spent months writing letters to our representatives, letters to every media outlet in the world, blogging, etc. all just to get a few peeps in the mainstream about the Downing Street Memo.

18. IF Reid and Pelosi were to do what lieberman is asking
they would be, in effect, making an admittance to conspiring or to consulting with moveon.org and then all hell would break loose!I hope that Pelosi and Reid will instead, in firm language, declare that moveon.org is an independent organization with independent views.....but I wouldn't bet on it.

Everybody send a thank-you email to LIEberman's office. Say that thanks to the free publicity he has given move-on.org, their membership has swelled by thousands and donations made today are waaaay up. Ask him to keep mentioning their name so they can afford to do more commercials. That should shut him up pretty quick.
