Funny, every article mentions farmers groups that support this bill, but the only groups I could find behind it were organisations like the National Pork Council And the Cattleman's Association and that ever present ballyhoo-er of industrial agriculture the Farm Bureau, none of whom actually have the interests of anyone who actually farms at heart. If your Senator sits on the Ag Cmt,I urge you to contact them and let them know you strongly oppose S807 and that manure, especially when it's full of synthetic hormones and antibiotics and it comes from cattle, swine and chicken that have been fed GMO feed is most definitely a hazardous and toxic waste.

Boxer declares war on Superfund exemption for farms

E&E News: The Senate’s lead figure on water pollution oversight yesterday drew a “battle line” with farm state senators who want to exempt animal waste from pollution reporting requirements.

At a hearing on pollution from confined animal feeding operations, Senate Environment and Public Work Committee Chairwoman Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) vowed to fight against any efforts in the farm bill or agriculture appropriations to exempt farms from pollution laws. Boxer said she would “stand all night” on the Senate floor declaiming the exemptions if necessary.

“This is going to be a battle; I wanted to have this hearing today to draw the lines of this battle,” Boxer said at the hearing’s conclusion. “My first priority is to protect the health of the people.”

Boxer said she would tell the “truth” about pollution from CAFOs to “members of the Agriculture Committee who might want to take some of our jurisdiction away, and to the Senate floor.”

The statement was an indirect stab at Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) and other farm state members who are looking for a home for S. 807, a bill that would exempt manure from the Superfund law. They say Superfund was written for industrial contamination, not farms.
