Subject: US Attorney's Offices Are Having Trouble Paying The Bills
There I was reading along with another article about our dysfunctional Justice Department when I stopped, womperjawed and flabbergasted. Could this be right?

The line that captured my attention was the one that read, "According to WSJ, lack of money is so acute, that US Attorney's offices are having trouble paying for court reporters transcripts, travel to take depositions, and even photocopying."

According to the Wall Street Journal the US Attorney's Offices can't pay the bills. Wow! Is Rupert Murdoch in charge over there enough yet that we can't believe the Wall Street Journal? When will we know? Will the WSJ have a front-page photo spread of Brittany's butt and Lindsey's mug shot?

Let the thought of a lack of money for the Justice Department rattle around in your skull while contemplating the fact that we are spending about $100.000.00 per minute in Iraq and Mr. Bush wants another $50 billion while the Justice Department of the United Frigging States of America of which the US Attorneys are an essential part, cannot afford photocopying. What the hell can you add to that?

1. In a strange way, that evens out the fight.
Traditionally defense attorneys have had the harder time trying to save their clients from imprisonment with no retainers, no promise of full payment upon a decision, having to rely on their own saved earnings to pay for evidence, witnesses, professional tests that will have to be interpreted by experts (more money to pay for the experts), etc. Prosecutors used to have an almost limitless budget that allowed for the luxury of paying for more evidence which by its disproportionate volume which convince a jury of guilt.

2. Actually, we're all poorer for it
If you read the entire article, the author stated that there is evidence of cases that are languishing due to the budget shortage. The US Attorney offices around the country are losing key personnel as well, those who could have cleaned up the mess after the Boy King goes back to his ranch. We'll be left with Regent grads and Kool-Aid drinkers for the foreseeable future.

One might also want to consider the idea that the DOJ is being starved of money for the same reasons several other entities are -- is the current administration casting its eye towards privatization, for instance?

3. As an accountant that sounds to me like someone isn't doing the paperwork

I don't know what payment mechanisms they use but you do have to take the time to fill them out/submit them. There has to be a control on approval and a record of who got paid what and when.

Either the admin staff aren't doing anything or the managing partner (for lack of an accurate term) is spending their time on something else.

I doubt that it is from a lack of funds.

ON EDIT- I misspelled accountant

4. The RW monkeywrenching of the entire government is just
about complete.

Don't forget that when Grover Norquist said, "I don't want to abolish government. I simply want to reduce it to the size where I can drag it into the bathroom and drown it in the bathtub" he really DID mean for it to be utterly destroyed.

This is why I consider the entire RW to be guilty of no less a crime than treason - because they seek to DESTROY our government.
