I admit I never heard of creating explosions with fertilizer before McVeigh either, but what do you suppose those guys in Germany were going to do with all that HP? OR...is this yet another diversionary mistake?

39. self-cleaning dog barf?
It does make the dog barf if he's been accidentally poisoned (don't ask), and it does leave the carpet cleaner looking than pre-barf.

Edited on Wed Sep-05-07 11:13 AM by northzax
hexamethylene triperoxide diamine. it's the same stuff the airplane liquid bombers were supposed to be using. you can also combine it with magnesium oxide. if you have access to decent acids, you can make TATP as well.
this was concentrated Hydrogen Peroxide, remember.

17. I was thinking of TATP
Though you'd have to be utterly insane to try to make it, even if you're a trained chemist and have access to a well-equipped lab.

Assuming you can get the ingredients (you have to use pure hydrogen peroxide, not the dilute stuff you can get at the drug store,) trying to make it in a bathtub or kitchen would be nearly suicidal.

I'm not familiar with HMDT though - it it even remotely stable in the way that TATP is not?

7. A fairly good one, actually.
The stuff you get in the store is usually less than 1% H2O2 in water. Concentrated peroxides are actually quite dangerous. They're also ridiculously unstable, so no terrorist would ever use it.

So yeah, if people are talking about terrorists using peroxide, it's a diversionary mistake.

40. The morning news said
35% H2O2.

Strong enough? (A serious question: For all I know, the reactions at that concentration would have such a low yield as to be useless.)

41. No, not strong enough at all.
That's the common concentration used for certain industrial purposes, and many chemistry labs.

You wouldn't want to get it on your skin, but it wouldn't explode.

Nearly pure hydrogen peroxide is truly nasty stuff.

The Nazis even used hydrogen peroxide to power experimental submarines.

22. Yeah, I remember stories about the Komet
It was a very dangerous aircraft, and several pilots died in accidents. Sometimes the hypergolic fuel tanks leaked, causing fires and explosions, or spilling on the pilot (very nasty.)

44. T-stoff
A stabilized, high-concentration (like 90 percent) hydrogen peroxide solution. Mixed with C-stoff (methanol-hydrazine), it created spontaneous combustion. Me-163 pilots had to introduce the mixture ever so carefully, lest they blow the thing to Kingdom Come. Some weren't careful enough.

Each mixture was loaded separately. They didn't even dare have them near each other in an uncontrolled situation; it was that volatile. After fueling, all hoses, etc. were thoroughly rinsed with water, as were the Komet's fuel systems after each sortie.

With all that, they got only 16 Allied bombers in about a year of service.

I love "Wings." :D

Pure or nearly pure HP is really nasty stuff. On the other hand, it's also wildly unstable so no competant terrorist would use it.

14. A pretty violent one.
Explosion:
Contact with oxidizable substances may cause extremely violent combustion. Drying of concentrated hydrogen peroxide on clothing or other combustible materials may cause fire or explosion. Sealed containers may rupture when heated.

They had 35 vats of this.

Europe has been dealing with terrorists for a long time. They realize it is minimized by good police work and not by bombing the crap out of countries.

45. Used in the 7/7 bombs in London
Post-incident forensic analysis has shown that the explosions were caused by
home-made organic peroxide-based devices, packed into rucksacks. Organic
peroxide explosive is dangerous to manufacture because of its instability but it does
not require a great deal of expertise and can be made using readily available
materials and domestic equipment.

20. I am a rocket hobbyist and would like to learn more about the use of H2O2 as a propellant.

This is an area that requires extreme caution since high-strength H2O2 is used. US Peroxide does not support this application by hobbyists given the potential dangers and logistics of transporting the material. You can learn more of the application by contacting the National Association of Rocketry -- Technical Services (NARTS) Group at P.O. Box 1482, Saugus, MA 01906 (CompuServe account: 73320,1253) or The Pacific Rocket Society at 1825 Oxnard Blvd., Ste. 24 , Oxnard, California 93030. A good technical article on hybrid engines using H2O2 is David Andrews, "Advantages of Hydrogen Peroxide as a Rocket Oxidant", Journal of the British Interplanetary Society, vol 43, number 7, page 319-328, July 1990.
