"Dead Certain" Bush's autobio released today-has a 5 -star rating so far-

In this ambitious work of political narrative, Robert Draper takes us inside the Bush White House and delivers an intimate portrait of a tumultuous decade and a beleaguered administration. Virtually every page of this book crackles with scenes, anecdotes, and dialogue that will surprise even long-time observers of George W. Bush.
With unprecedented access to all the key figures of this administration -- from six one-on-one sessions with the president, to Laura Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Condoleeza Rice, Karl Rove, and perhaps 200 other players, some well known, some not -- Draper has achieved what no other journalist or contemporary historian has done thus far: He has told the story of the Bush White House form the inside, with a special emphasis on how the very personality of this strong-willed president has affected the outcome of events.

Now....we aren't going to let that happen, are we?

"...In recounting the Miers nomination and other controversies of the Bush presidency, Draper offers an intimate portrait of a White House racked by more internal dissent and infighting than is commonly portrayed and of a president who would, alternately, intensely review speeches line by line or act strangely disengaged from big issues..."

although the spin on the mainstream media gave the impression that this was about Mr Bush's turmoils and successes.

13. The Miers nomination
was of little long-term significance. Still, in general, by pointing to "internal dissent and infighting," the president does not appear responsible for the errors of the administration. One very clear example -- which is significant, unlike the Miers bit -- was the Plame scandal. The book takes the fictional stance that the president was shocked to find out that Karl Rove and others were involved in exposing Plame's identity. That is no more true than the story of George Washington cutting down a cherry tree.

25. Saw the author on the Today show this am, and the author (Draper)
related a story: in 2001, at the beginning of Chimpy's reign, he held a meeting at the WH to which Sec. of State Colin Powell was late. Bush ordered the doors to the meeting room locked, and everyone inside the meeting laughed to hear the doorknobs being tried--I'm asuming Powell never got to sit in at the meeting. What a classless, petty, self-important tyrannical dick Chimpy is. A good boss knows how to show displeasure at someone being late without resorting to that sort of heavy-handedness. A good boss would say, "Colin's here, now we can finally get started", or some other subtle dig.

30. Bush:"I really do not feel comfortable in the role of analyzing myself."
Edited on Tue Sep-04-07 09:19 AM by CGowen
Bush, as always, bridled at the request to navel-gaze. "You're the observer," he said as he worked the cheese in his mouth. "I'm not. I really do not feel comfortable in the role of analyzing myself. I'll try. But I don't spend a lot of time.
...

"The other thing is that you can't fake it. You have to believe it. And I believe it. I believe we'll succeed."
...
You can't play mini-ball with the influence we have and expect there to be peace. You've gotta think, think BIG.
