Why would anybody sane give a rat's posterior whether or not Iran went nuclear, other than the obvious bad effect on proliferation? Since Bush has been doing everything he can to promote proliferation anyway, one more member of the nuclear club would be a drop in the bucket here.

We are, after all, talking about people who have not waged a single aggressive war since the Sassanid dynasty of the 6th or 7th century. They are completely surrounded by nuclear powers (Israel, Pakistan, India, China and Russia) two of which have come scarily close to the brink a couple of times already. Even if they broke a centuries-long tradition and used a nuclear weapon pre-emptively, they'd be obliterated.

Russia is still our most significant nuclear threat, not because they currently mean us any harm (though the neocons are working really hard to change that), but because their command and control systems have deteriorated so badly. Naturally, Bush has cut funds from the Nunn/Lugar Threat Reduction Act which was meant to help them deal with this problem. On the ground, there is no difference whatsoever between "Oopsie" and "Die Yankee scum".

i tend to believe that they simply do not care.
neoconserative ideology is extremely short sighted. It has a preoccupation with the immediate at the expense of the future. They sincerely believe that if they do the "right" thing now, the rest will just work itself out.
