All Homophobes are Gay: Problem of homophia is now considers solved.
all of those times someone got beat up for being gay? their attackers were gay

the reason we cant get married? all the people who are against equal marriage are gay!

Cant pass Enda: Gays stopped it

Gays cant serve openly in the military: gays did it to themselves

GAY GAY GAY!

All our persecuters are GAY!

which ofcourse conveniently shifts the onus of responsibility, but who really cares about that?

(blam,e) some gay signal I just don't understand. ;-)

I read a while ago that homophobes who were shown gay sexual images were more likely to be aroused than straight guys who were not obsessed.

Edited on Thu Aug-30-07 01:49 PM by JackBeck
The sample of men used was somewhere around 50. Too small.

Also, there's no way to tell what the homophobes were thinking. Could they have been fantasizing about women while being shown gay porn, because they found the images too distressful to look at, thus causing sexual stimulation? Who knows?

Upon self-examiniation, I find that much of my response to what I deem detestible is rooted in something I've seen in myself that I've worked to make healthy. Some call it projection. Some see it as a response to a threat to a flipside. I know that the mere suggestion that I'm externalizing has assisted me in my own introspection and improvement over the years. I know as well that my own healthy self-esteem (not egoism) tends to act contrary to hating others - that when I haven't been as healthy in that regard, I've found myself tending more toward externalizing that antipathy.

YMMV, of course. I don't personally believe Craig's (alleged/hypothesized) sexual orientation is really relevant.

25. Let's not be too obtuse. Does ANYONE think "men who hate women" have healthy SELF-esteem?
I've never seen a bigot with healthy self-esteem. I've never known a misogynist with healthy self-esteem.

Hatred for others is often (or always?) rooted in such manure, imho.

31. Sexism is far to intrenched to be a simple self-esteem issue.
Certain extreme and blatant examples of sexism may be self-esteem related. But prejudice is found among vast numbers of people with no apparent self-esteem problems.

Glass ceilings were not created by a few men with self esteem problems. Nor was the ongoing epidemic of rape and sexual assault.

Blaming self esteem is simplistic, at best.

36. A failure to distinguish between the social system's perversions and individual bigotries ...
... makes it far more difficult to deal with EITHER. That there's an interrelationship does not obviate the differing nature of the problems. The inequities infesting our social and economic systems serve a ruling minority - divide and conquer. That various prejudices and bigotries are chosen to spread such division and instability isn't accidental, of course ... but it all depends on perpetuating ignorance and fomenting fears. Into such a context of fear and ignorance, a pointing finger is inserted and the divisions and conflicts serve a very small minority.

38. You're changing the subject.
I agree that both systemic and individual expressions of prejudice need to be challenged. That wasn't the point.

The point was your generalization that all sexist people apparently have self-esteem problems, which effectively limits all consideration of sexism to a few men with a personality disorder. It's not just a few men, and it's not because of a personality disorder.

Sexism is so normal in a sexist society that almost everyone (possibly everyone) in a sexist society is sexist. The question isn't "are we/they sexist." It's "how sexist are we/they."

Calling me out for supposedly implying that it's only a systemic issue (which I never implied) doesn't change the generalization you posted that I was responding to.

If you were to give me a bit more credit for understanding your point, you might understand mine ... and understand how I see it relates to individual behavior.

But posts where we employ "you" and "I" as subjects migrate for too much into the personal rather than objective for my taste. It looks like an impasse ... far too protective of a personal perspective for really civil discussion.

I don't think appetites and animosities stemm from healthy self-esteem.

39. Then, have you ever met anyone who you think has healthy self esteem?
Have you ever met anyone who has no prejudices? If you think the two are so closely related, then prejudice and self-esteem problems would be equally common.

41. Yep. I've known a decent number of people who were remarkable ...
... in their healthy self-esteem, a couple to the point that they personified 'grace' - a kind of comfort in their own skin that was (almost?) contagious. Without exception, they were accomplished and successful without a hint of obsessive or over-compensating behavior. What I found noteworthy was they were far more effective and efficient than most because they didn't waste their time and energy on preserving some bigotry or prejudice.

While those who attain the point of comfort in their own skin that shows as 'grace' have been quite rare in my experience, I suppose that's as much due to dragging my own baggage around for far too long as that they're actually that rare. I've at least learned enough to be able to do better in finding and maintaining relationships with those with self-esteem ... since I'm sure there've been times in my life when I'd not recognize them if I tripped over them.

Let's face it ... we're not a society that's particularly healthy, psychologically. 'Average' ain't all that good.

9. Sadly, it seems likely many are homophobic just because they are insecure in general
and feel powerful if they can give grief to some other group they consider vulnerable.

It's the ol kick the dog trickle down patter of behavior for many people. They feel like shit and look for someone to blame it on. Not always about sexual orientation at all.

35. agree,
some people just have to put down somebody in order to feel good about themselves. sometimes it is not personal as in "i'm a terrible person" but more " i am a member of a lesser class". A lot of bigots actually do not think white people are much but adopt racism as a way to try to make it come true, or at least not be noticed. Others use racism as a reason for them to exist when they do not have any other real reason for living. (people without a feeling of purpose in their lives)
