Marie Callender Frozen Turtle Pies Recalled for Bacterial Contamination

Disclaimer suggested by DUer KamaAina:
"Turtle Brand Pie, Not Made With Real Turtles" :spray:

American Pie, LLC of Syosset, New York is recalling more than 1,400 cases of frozen pies that have the potential to cause food poisoning. The Marie Callender Turtle Pies, which were sold in 15 states, are being recalled due to an unspecified bacterial contamination.

American Pie said that the turtle pies had tested positive for levels of bacteria higher than company standards allowed, but were mistakenly shipped from its warehouse. The pies were sold in Kroger, Giant Eagle and Hy-Vee supermarkets in Ohio, Texas, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota. The recalled pies have a UPC code of 12781 10280, and a production code ending in 143. Only Marie Callender Turtle Pies with the code ending in 143 are included in the recall.

No illnesses have been reported due to the recalled Marie Callender Turtle Pies, and the company has not said what type of bacteria sparked the recall. However, American Pie warned that eating the pies could cause gastrointestinal illness, nausea and vomiting. Such symptoms are associated with several food-borne pathogens, including Salmonella, Shigella and E. coli.

<snip>

American Pie is said to be working with the Food & Drug Administration to get the tainted Marie Callendar Turtle Pies off of store shelves. There is no word on when, or if, American Pie will disclose exactly what type of bacteria has contaminated the pies. But anyone who purchased Marie Callendar Turtle Pies with the appropriate UPC codes should not consume the product. The pies should be returned to the supermarket where they were purchased for a refund. More information on the recall can be obtained by calling 1-888-339-7437, extension 3987.

4. Should read "Turtle Brand Pie, Not Made With Real Turtles"
It took me a couple of minutes of head-scratching before I remembered that "turtle pie" is really just a pie made with chocolate and other sweets, analogous to the "turtle" candies. Having dined on turtle soup in the past, notably at Mother's in New Orleans, I was envisioning a turtle pot pie, much as you probably were, and thinking, "Um, yeah, I could see where they might have salmonella"... :dunce:
