Owen Wilson Suicide Attempt Confirmed

The incident on Sunday afternoon that landed actor Owen Wilson in the hospital was called in to police as a suicide attempt, according to Santa Monica Police Department phone logs.

According to the records, a call was received at 12:08 p.m. on Saturday for an incident listed as "attempt suicide." Wilson remains in stable condition at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills, California, according to spokeswoman Cynthia Harding (see "Owen Wilson 'In Good Condition,' Hospital Says").

"Extra" reports that Wilson's brother Luke found him at his home on Sunday. Since being admitted to the hospital, Wilson reportedly has been visited by other family members, including his brother Andrew. Samuel L. Jackson was also seen at the hospital, though it has not been confirmed that he was visiting Wilson.

Wilson's publicist has offered no further comment since issuing the following statement on her client's behalf Monday: "I respectfully ask that the media allow me to receive care and heal in private during this difficult time."

Meanwhile, rumors continue to run wild over what provoked the incident. The New York Post cited a recent "vicious quarrel" with a close friend and his reported breakup with "You, Me and Dupree" co-star Kate Hudson as potential reasons — however, nothing has been substantiated.

The fate of two of Wilson's upcoming high-profile films remains to be seen. Slated for release next month is the Wes Anderson-directed "The Darjeeling Limited," in which Wilson co-stars with Jason Schwartzman and Adrien Brody. Wilson was scheduled to attend the film's debut at the Venice Film Festival next week; Fox Searchlight has not responded to inquiries about any change in plans for the launch of the film.

8. Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Suicide is more publicly forgiveable
than being a heroin addict.

22. Did you ever see "Bottle Rocket"?
Great movie, but obvious to me at least, that it was written by someone with mental heath issues.

If I were to guess, I would think both he and his Brother Luke have had to deal with bouts of Depression and that Owen might even be bi-polar (Manic/Depression) leaning mostly toward the Manic side most of the time.

Why is this on DU? I didn't even know who this guy was, but I recognized the picture. Never liked his movies, at least the ones I've seen.

14. Sorry
Didn't mean to offend. I just didn't know the guy. I don't spend much time thinking and talking about what celebrities are doing, other than when my wife jabbers on about Brad and Angelina. I prefer to try to stay removed from the Britney Spears brand of journalism and TV. But I know some people really identify with celebs, so if you fall in that category, that's cool with me.

18. Be sure to put that on your "Get Well" card...
Made me laugh -- hope it brings at least a smile to him.

Suicide is no laughing matter - my extended family was hit in the 80's. We are still recovering, unfortunately for us, there was no preliminary attempt discovered by a family member.

The fact that his brother was on the spot suggests to me he was crying for help enough to alert his brother to check up on him. That, plus the borderline attempt (which possibly would have been fatal if not detected), just screams to me to leave the guy alone for a long time.

Then he can go on Oprah and make the rounds and continue his career which has brought cheer to the rest of us.

30. I was really sorry to hear this too!
The first time I noticed him in a film was when I saw Behind Enemy Lines. If you haven't seen it, you should!! It's a great movie!! And I don't even like war movies but it was so good!

After I saw this movie, I rented Shanghai Noon and that was another good one!!

Since then, I've seen many Owen Wilson movies, some good, some not so good. But I still go to see them or rent them just because Owen is in them.

I'm very sorry this has happened to him and I hope he gets the help he needs.

And btw, I'm usually not into celebrity-type stories either but Owen is not the typical Britney-Paris-Lindsey celebrity trash story.....
