China: Another Mine Flood, 8 Missing

BEIJING (AP) - Water rushed into a coal mine in southwestern China and trapped eight workers, a newspaper reported Friday, one week after similar flooding left 181 miners missing and presumed dead.

More than 200 rescuers were trying to reach the eight miners, who were trapped Thursday, the West China Metropolitan Daily reported. There was no word on their condition.

"The precise causes of the accident are being investigated," the report said. The mine is in Panzhihua city in Sichuan province.

The accident comes after a swollen river breached a dike last Friday and flooded two coal shafts in eastern China's Shandong province, trapping 172 workers in one pit and nine in another.
