What is going on in north east Iraq???
SULAIMANIYA, Iraq (Reuters) - Kurdish authorities in northeastern Iraq said on Tuesday they were investigating the authenticity of leaflets warning villagers to evacuate ahead of an Iranian military offensive against Kurdish rebels.

Hundreds of villagers have fled their homes in Iraq's mountainous northeast while others hid in caves after what local authorities said was days of intermittent shelling by Iran across the border

(from two days ago) - and then this today

Baghdad/Tehran - Iranian troops on Thursday fired artillery at several villages in Iraq's northern Kurdish region, a spokesman for Iraqi border troops said. The attack east rSulaymanyah was carried out from the Iranian area and was felt some 10 kilometres inland, the spokesman said. The inhabitants of several villages fled in panic. There were no reports of injuries.

The Iranian government, meanwhile, reacted to earlier reports of a pamphlet campaign in the Kurdish region, reportedly aimed at stirring up panic in neighbouring Iraq.

Tehran denied reports of distributing pamphlets in the Kurdish villages that warned inhabitants of Iranian military operations in the area.

Spokesman for Iraqi border troops Jabar Yavar said he ruled out military operations conducted in Iraqi territory.

Tehran wants to avoid a conflict with the United States over Iraqi territory, which could provide a pretext for an attack on Iran.

Fears of an offensive by the Iranian Army grew in the autonomous Kurdish area after the pamphlets, allegedly originating from the Iranian Army, were distributed earlier in the week.

Local sources in northern Iraq had said the purported flyers, written in Kurdish, instructed civilians to relocate in order to avoid either ground or airborne military operations against anti- Iranian fighters from the Party for a Free Life in Kurdistan (PJAK).

Try and link this last one - http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/97327.html

Well - apears those people are indeed running away - And if Iran didn't drop the pamphlets why ae they shooting at those people????

Man - I really think this going to be a day late and a dollar short awakening here - I do.

This has to stop right now!!!!! It is going too too far. And the adults are awol.

2. We cannot allow that - personally - I think the Iranians are just as
dumb as our president. This is becoming way too close to to that books warning - Guns of August - I mean WAY too close.

I know the shells have been flying from the north and east lately into the Kurd territories - all the bad things happening up there - I know.

It just happens when too many weapons come into proximity of too many other weapons??

Goddamn these people - and goddamn the democrats for not stopping it - and they knew better.

They need to be woken up.

Joe

8. Good picture -
And I also think there was some kind of deal with the devil made after that 1979 embargo - I think somebody sold our soul for oil - and I want it back.

It didn't use to be that way - and it doesn't have to be that way.

7. I just really like the people here -
It just keeps going back to that - cause frankly, I have some disagreements with some moderators lately.

But that I do like the people here - it out weighs that.

10. The PKK are on the Turks & Iranians shit list.
The Busolini Regime is probably not so fond of them either.

The Kurdistan Workers Party (Kurdish: Partiya Karkerên Kurdistan or PKK, Turkish: Kürdistan İşçi Partisi, also called KADEK , Kongra-Gel and KCK) is an armed militant terrorist group founded in the 1970s and led, until his capture in 1999, by Abdullah Öcalan.<4> The PKK's ideology was founded on revolutionary Marxism-Leninism and Kurdish nationalism. The PKK's goal has been to create an independent socialist Kurdish state in a territory which it claims as Kurdistan, an area that comprises parts of south-eastern Turkey, north-eastern Iraq, north-eastern Syria and north-western Iran.<5><6> It is an ethnic secessionist organization that uses force and the threat of force against both civilian<7> and military targets for the purpose of achieving its political goal.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization internationally by a number of states and organizations, including the USA, NATO and the EU.<1><3> More than 37,000 people have been killed in the Turkey-PKK conflict since 1984,<8> 4,568 being military personnel.<9>

This is the important part:

The PKK's ideology was founded on revolutionary Marxism-Leninism and Kurdish nationalism.

14. Hi Joe! Welcome back! And thanks...
I saw the report today about Iranian troops massing near the northern border.

And I think you are right about "a day late and a dollar short awakening". You are paying a lot more attention than most people. I think a lot of folks won't realize how this has all been coming together until it's too late. And it's no fun saying "I told you so" when a bunch of kids (on both sides) are dead or wounded.

I wish I understood this better. And I'm always skeptical of the news coming out of that region, never sure which reports are just trying to stir up a particular sentiment or which are forebodingly true.

Glad to have you back posting again.

17. Right now Turkey has maybe a quarter million soldiers
sitting on the Kurds northern border - I don't know the Iranian number to east - but it is probably about the same. They both shell those Kurds.

But the major problem for those people is from the south - more and more.

And frankly it is still a mystery to be who exacly annhilated that west Kurd village - cause it was pretty total. They managed to kill almost everybody in it.

It is just - there are too many guns too close together and are so likely to go off. And it only takes one SOB to start it.

I want our kids the hell out of there right f-ing now.

Joe

It's a disaster waiting to happen (already has happen, for many soliders) and is not going to suddenly magically get better.

A good military analyst should have predicted what is happening in the north. Oh wait, they did. No one was listening.
