Not Ready to Make Nice
That's what it comes down to, I suppose. We were called "traitors" and worse. People have suggested we should be arrested, or killed. And they're still doing it. Everything we believe in has been dragged through the mud for the past thirty years, by Reagan, by Bush I, and by this little motherfucking chimp. But what's worse, there's the host of talking heads, of mindless puppet people, spouting vicious bullshit every time they open their mouths.

They trashed Natalie and the Chicks--people from Free Republic did everything they could to derail the careers of some beautiful and talented women who dared WHO DARED to question the righteousness of the monkey puppet and his war of choice. Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, and the rest of the FOX News scumbags were like attack dogs straining at a leash. Had it been possible, had they been able to get away with it, they would have egged them on to tear through the barricades and drag them kicking and screaming into the street to be beaten before our eyes. And YOU KNOW IT.

The corporate media went along with the war--creating immensely blinding, spinning, glorifying graphics for the war, lying to us, spewing the toxic propaganda of this administration all along, force-feeding bullshit to the American Public. And anyone who tried to speak out was shouted down. Not just Natalie, but anyone with the nerve.

To me it's part and parcel of the same damn thing. The Republicans serving the oil companies, the Republican AND Democratic Senators and Representatives capitulating to the insurance and credit card companies.

Oh, but NOW that the Dems are in control, and may well end up winning the White House in '08, they're crying for "bipartisanship." The leading candidate is one who tries to straddle the line, who tries to portray an image of being yet ANOTHER "uniter." She doesn't say so, but... that's the idea.

The runner up at this point goes even farther, saying that he wants to be a uniter, that he wants to end the "partisan" squabbling. The fact is that it's NOT about partisan bickering, it's about truth and justice vs. evil and deception.

But we're supposed to "play nice?"

To quote Natalie Maines: "I'm not ready to play nice."

Okay, I'll admit it. I'm sitting here watching "Shut Up and Sing," and the whole thing incenses me BEYOND description.

Fuck country music. Fuck the fans. Fuck Toby Keith for being a opportunistic bastard, fuck Reba McIntire for mocking them, Fuck the radio stations who refused to play their music. Fuck Free Republic, Fuck Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, and FUCK Ann Coulter, just on general principles. And FUCK George W. Bush and his collection of slimeball economic vampires that live in their eternal crypt.

And fuck anyone who wants to "make peace" with the whole lot of them.

4. It was very lonely opposing Bush in the post 9-11 world
Had it not been for DU, I would have lost it.

The Dixie Chicks dares speak out and were lambasted. It's sad thaty a country group provied more leadership and brains in that short time then a certain U.S. Senator from New York who now, unfortunately, is frontrunner for the supposedly progressive party, has done in her entire career

5. Don't say "fuck country music." For one thing...
For one thing, if you really want to make Country Music mad, fucking it doesn't do much good. You gotta steal its pickup truck, sleep with its wife, and kill its dog.

Secondly...

Mission Statement
Press - Facts and Information

The MUSIC ROW DEMOCRATS organization was formed in December 2003 by a group of Nashville music industry leaders who were fed up with feeling as if they had to apologize for being Democrats...
particularly when they knew that Republican policies were negatively affecting the lives of the working class people who make up much of the audience for their music. Since that initial meeting, the group has grown to include more than 1,300 members who are working to create an effective vehicle for the Democratic voice

Mission Statement

1) To recruit and organize Democrats from the Music Community in order to create a data base and disseminate information about all matters relating to the Democratic Party.

2) To promote the image of Democrats in the following ways:

A) To counter the disinformation directed toward Democratic ideals and to vigorously challenge the demonization of Democratic ideals and individuals that support them.
B) To dispel the notion that the country music community is predominately Republican.
C) To defend the First Amendment rights of those in our community.

3) To endorse and support Democratic candidates for election in local, state and national elections.

4) To create a vehicle for the membership to collectively create,
endorse and convey specific unifying policy initiatives to the National
Democratic Party, and to refrain from debating issues that divide our
membership.

5) To focus the unique and powerful resources of our community to
further the cause of Democracy.

And the Chicks FUCKED country music when the little Carrie Underwood darling of country music and Reba McIntyre took back seats to the Chicks at the Grammies this year.

The looks on the country queens' faces were priceless.

They sang a beautiful song called 'We Shall Be Free'.

14. "I'll Never Smoke Weed with Willie Again"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QI-1IYoveM

I always heard that his herb was top shelf
I just could not wait to find out for myself
Don't knock it til' you tried it, Well I tried it my friend
And I'll never smoke weed with Willie again

I learned a hard lesson in a small Texas town
He fired up a fat boy and passed him around
The last words that I spoke before they tucked me in
Was I'll never smoke weed with Willie again

I'll never smoke weed with Willie again
My parties all over before it begins
You can pour me some old whiskey river my friend
But I'll never smoke weed with Willie again

I hopped on his old bus, the Honey Suckle Rose
The party was Vegas it was after the show.
Alone in the front lounge with just me and him,
With one parting puff grim creeper set in.

I'll never smoke weed with Willie again
My parties all over before it begins
You can pour me some old whiskey river my friend
But I'll never smoke weed with Willie again

Now we're passing the guitar and telling good jokes
I know ones a-comin' cause I'm smelling smoke
No I do not partake, I just let it pass by
With a smile on my face and a great contact high

I'll never smoke weed with Willie again
My parties all over before it begins
You can pour me some old whiskey river my friend
But I'll never smoke weed with Willie again

In the fetal position with drool on my chin
I messed up and smoked weed with Willie again

19. The last two times Democrats wanted to "play nice" cost us dearly...
(1) When Bill Clinton won the White House and felt his domestic agenda would take precedence over the Iran/Contra investigations;
(2) When Lee Hamilton decided that it was better to pursue the Iran/Contra investigations in a "bi-partisan" manner...

We saw how the Republicans "played nice" and pursued "bi-partisanship." :grr:

I agree with Natalie Maines: "I'm not ready to play nice (either)."

29. WHEN THAT WAS ALL HAPPENING TO THE CHICKS I HAD A HOTEL ROOM NEXT TO THEM
Edited on Wed Aug-22-07 04:35 PM by flyarm
in Kansas City..my husband was there for business..and i had gone out shopping and i came back to the hotel and wasn't allowed up in the elevator because cops were guarding the elevator..i was told i had to go to the check in desk..

i did as told and was told the Dixie Chicks had the rooms next to mine and police guards would be in the hallways.

So i was given a special card to show the guards..

so i get to my floor and there are cops by the elevator and they walked me to my room..My room was next to Natalie's room..and the other two were next to her's..we had a suite at the end of the hallway and there was a cop sitting in a chair next to my room door which was next to Natalie's room.

I then called down to the desk and asked would this guard be there all the time..and i was told yes..

i asked why for goodness sake..well it wasn't goodness sake..i was told they had a death threat..i said well i want the guards there the entire time!

so not being a country western fan ..and honestly never having heard their music ..i was aware of what was being done to them by radio stations and conservatives...

so i sat down at the desk in the room and i wrote the Chicks a letter..

telling them I was proud of them, for saying what they believe..and that no one should ever refrain from saying what they believe..that is what our country was based on, freedom of speech..i said that is their constitutional right and what every member of my family fought for!

I told them if i was their mothers i would be very proud of them for speaking out for truth , and what is right..i said right is not always popular..but right is right..and wrong will always be wrong, and this war is wrong.

I told them i had never heard their music but i would buy their CD's and i would listen and i said i lived on a beach in Florida and that i would buy 100 of their CD';s and give them out !!

that i stand for free speech...and for their right to free speech!!

and i said it is a damn shame that anyone would threaten anyone's life for excersizing free speech.

again i wrote and said i was damn proud of them.

I gave the note to the guard sitting outside my room to give to them..he said he would..

The next morning i was going out and they were as well..with Annie Lebowitz the photographer...

i said ..hi girls....and i got into the elevator..i didn't want to hassle them ..or bother them..

but i did as i said i would..i got home and i bought 100 of their CD's and i passed them out on the beach..only one person said no thanks...

it took me 10 minutes to pass them all out!!

I have been a fan ever since!!

and i loved their mauve bus!! that was parked in front of the hotel!!

If you would, possibly, add the caveat that it's NOT addressed to those who supported them, just to the jingoistic and thoughtless jerks who did their best to derail their careers, fans and other musicians.

And attribute it to Saje Williams.

37. The documentary is great and so is the CD. I didn't really know that
much about their music until I got the CD as a show of support. It's actually awesome....some really good tunes. Plus, they kicked ass at the Grammy's. I think they might have made fans out of quite a few people who never would have listened to them otherwise. They should be very, very proud of doing what they did- the right thing.

38. Country music radio is the problem,
not necessarily country music, The artists are not in any way unified

Check out the songs (covers) on Dolly Parton's recent album:

1. Those Were The Days
2. Blowin In The Wind
3. Where Have All The Flowers Gone?
4. Twelfth Of Never
5. Where Do The Children Play
6. Me And Bobby McGee
7. Crimson And Clover
8. The Cruel War
9. Turn, Turn, Turn
10. If I Were A Carpenter
11. Both Sides Now
12. Imagine

do you think country radio played any of it?

Or how about this one from mary Chapin Carpenter (You know country radio never touched this):

On With The Song

This isn't for the ones who blindly follow
Jingoistic bumper stickers tellin' you
To love it or leave it and you'd better love Jesus
And get out of the way of the Red, White, and Blue

This isn't for the ones who buy their six-packs
At the 7-Eleven where the clerk makes change
Whose accent makes clear (he) sure ain't from here
They call him a camel jockey instead of his name

No, this is for the ones who stand their ground
When the lines in the sand get deeper
When the whole world seems to be upside down
And (the) shots bein' taken get cheaper, cheaper

This isn't for the ones who would gladly swallow
Everything their leader would have them know
Bowing and kissin' while the truth goes missin'
"Bring it on," he crows, puttin' on his big show

This isn't for the man who can't count the bodies
Can't comfort the families, can't say when he's wrong
Playin' "I'm the decider," like some sort of Messiah
While another day passes and a hundred souls gone

This is for the ones that I see above me
Three little stars in a great big sky
Light for the world and hope for the weary
They try

This isn't for the ones with their radio signal
Callin' for bonfires and boycotts, they rave
Exhorting their listeners to spit on the sinners
While countin' the bucks of advertising, they'll say

This isn't for you and you know who you are
Just do what you want 'cause I know that you can
But I gotta be true to myself and to you
So on with the song, I don't give a damn

58. Dolly's rendition of "Imagine" was awesome...
And kudos to Mary Chapin Carpenter for standing up too.

To hell with everyone who jumped on board, though. To them, my statement stands.

40. A good double bill is....
to first watch "The U.S. vs. John Lennon" and then watch "Shut Up and Sing".

42. Bush didn't do this on his own.
He had help from all the we're-better-than-you flag-waving bullies who love to send other people to die for their pseudo-patriotism. All the SUVs with the Bush/Cheney stickers, the radio bloviators, Clear Channel suggesting protesters be run over... THEY got us into this war as much as bush did, and they didn't even get the $100 million defense contract to show for it.

That's John Edwards if anyone hasn't heard that quote yet.

47. I have loved the Chicks since they first came out!
That movie broke my heart. I knew how they were being treated, but I never knew how horrible it was for them. Everyone should see that movie! I used to listen to country music. Since the Chicks were treated like this I refuse to buy any CD's, listen to any country radio station or watch anything that relates to country. I bought a bunch of their last CD and gave them as gifts. I bought that movie and have seen them twice in concert here in the Detroit area. They are awesome and beautiful. They have a good website too!

"Just so you know, I'm ashamed that George W. Bush is from the United States of America!!"
