DeFazio, a Democrat who represents Oregon’s 4th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, was denied access recently to a presidential plan outlining how the federal government might continue to operate in the event of a catastrophe. As part of the Homeland Security Committee, DeFazio said he is usually able to review secret papers.
“It’s either one of three things: it’s nothing and they don’t have a plan, it’s something unconstitutional or extra-constitutional, or it’s just their obsessive Dick Cheney idea of security about everything,” DeFazio said. “They certainly feed the conspiracy theories because I can’t tell people it’s not if I can’t see it.”
Interest in the classified documents arose, he said, from Oregonians who asked him to look into the matter. DeFazio said he has since partnered with leadership in the Homeland Security Committee and asked again with their support.
