"God, angels, my seat belt"
A survivor of the bridge collapse just answered that way to Larry King's question "Why are you alive". Mostly, the guy talked about how if he wasn't wearing his seatbelt, he would have gone through his windshield.

2. I guess God wasn't on good terms with those folks still strapped in their cars.
Sitting under a few hundred tons of debris.

4. The way I figure it...
The angels needed to be under the damned bridge holding it up.

9. Not his point, actually
When he elaborated, it wasn't about god stuff but his seatbelt. He just answered why he thought he made it out alive. His seatbelt helped him in his unique situation. I just wanted to quote him as completely I could.

17. Hey, whatever gets you throught the night, I always say
I am glad he lived. When people do thank their makers publicly it always strikes me a little callous, but I can't fault them after coming through such an ordeal.

I DO draw the line when someone says God was on, for instance, MemphisU's side rather than Topeka State in a basketball game lol.

30. No, one man was expressing thanks to God, the Angels and his seatbelt, mostly

his seatbelt, that he survived.

No rational person thinks God didn't care about those who died. God cares about everyone and doesn't micromanage like that. Everyone has to die someday.

12. The way he went on and on about his seatbelt, that's how I took it
I really wanted to say something about Nader in my OP. But you know where mentioning him can get you around here. It's worse than mentioning god. I'm not religious at all but I did wanted to quote the guy accurately.

11. I sincerely doubt that this individual meant that God was not looking
out for others. He was just grateful to be alive. I see no reason to make his answer an anti-God diatribe.

20. Exactly. I'm grateful to God for all that is good, don't blame Him for what isn't.

If God controlled everything, everything would be good. But human beings have free will and often use it in evil ways. In this case, many in our government have chosen to ignore infrastructure and people are dead today because of it. God didn't make the bridge collapse. It collapsed due to human error and neglect.

14. Let me get this straight, did the guy mention

God and angels or have others just turned this thread into yet another atheist attack on believers?

16. well...
...my comment wasn't intended to be an "Atheist attack on believers"...since I AM a believer...just to point out the questions that can naturally arise when one thanks divine protection for an accident in which others have died.

I'm pretty sure I understand how the guy meant it; it's something a lot of us say (and think) when escaping a close situation. It can; however, lead into the whole realm of Theodicy.

That's all I meant...

19. I quoted what he said
He mentioned god and angels but when he elaborated it was all about the seatbelt. He went on about how it saved his life.

To tell you the truth, I was worried people would turn it into a Nader flame fest so I refrained from mentioning him. I never thought people would latch onto the god thing.

31. I'm going to start praying to seatbelts.
Seems to me they are a hell of a lot more useful than god or angels.
