Clyburn: Positive Report by Petraeus Could Split House Democrats on War

By Dan Balz and Chris Cillizza
Washington Post Staff Writer and Washingtonpost.com Staff Writer

House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) said Monday that a strongly positive report on progress on Iraq by Army Gen. David Petraeus likely would split Democrats in the House and impede his party's efforts to press for a timetable to end the war.

Clyburn, in an interview with the washingtonpost.com video program PostTalk, said Democrats might be wise to wait for the Petraeus report, scheduled to be delivered in September, before charting next steps in their year-long struggle with President Bush over the direction of U.S. strategy.

Clyburn noted that Petraeus carries significant weight among the 47 members of the Blue Dog caucus in the House, a group of moderate to conservative Democrats. Without their support, he said, Democratic leaders would find it virtually impossible to pass legislation setting a timetable for withdrawal.

"I think there would be enough support in that group to want to stay the course and if the Republicans were to stay united as they have been, then it would be a problem for us," Clyburn said. "We, by and large, would be wise to wait on the report."

Just a thought but don't we already know what Petraeus is going to say? After all he's only speaking to WH approved RW blogs and stations (FOX) and has already been quoted about needing to extend the mission longer to achieve the desired results of the surge.

Not to mention al-Maliki said on July 14th that Petraeus works along a “purely American vision.” Aka Bush's vision for Iraq.

Now he wants Petraeus out completely and has threatened to arm Shia militias if he does not leave.

Seems to me this is a classic Bush fuckup crony that our idiot Congress is all waiting on. These are the suckers though that believed the doctored intelligence on Iraqi WMDs when ALL of us knew better. The same fools that believed Alito, Roberts and Alberto Gonzales and allowed them to get through confirmations because they TOOK THEM AT THEIR WORD. The same complete morons that trust the US elections' process enough to never push through a bill to prevent election thefts via voting machines and the same rejects that refuse to impeach because they don't want to piss off the constituents that are clearly behind removing these criminals.

They are quite too incapable to be in a decision making position in our country if they are this blind and ignorant to the facts.

At this point NOBODY from the Bush regime should be taken at face value. We already know their pitch, Tony Snow's been making it on TV. They want to stay there indefinitely. Congress would be once again the biggest band of idiots in history if they fell for this shit again.

2. Any Democrat who isn't EXPECTING a blessing doesn't deserve to be in Congress.
In fact, many of them don't deserve it any way you slice it.

3. Sounds like the Blue Dogs are prepared to continue Bush's war.
How nice....time to start evaluating what this "blue dog" caucus is and how they might be enabling the Republican agenda.

5. So--- why in the heck would any self respecting Democrat
believe a general, that was about the ten or eleventh pick to head the war in Iraq. One who finally agreed with and carried out the orders of bush. Damn if I would believe anything he said.

6. Intellectually weak I say (certain House dems). Any general that dares go against the current,
well, you know what happens to them.

7. The war won't end before before the 2008 elections.
Before the last election I predicted that the Congressional Democrats would work to achieve some minor and pointless victory but fail to make any real change for fear of risking the Presidency. Sad to say, I was 100% right.

They made their "stand", cried about Bush being too strong to defeat, and settled for benchmarks. Frankly, when it comes to the war we elected a bunch of pussies too scared to take responsibility for their actions, which is half the reason the country is in it's current mess in the first place. Call me wrong if you like, but until Congress proves otherwise I remain wildly unimpressed.

8. The report will have enough good things--that has been
the point all along. The NYT Article " This is a war we can win"
the Pollack and O'Hanlon report. Two Democratic Think Tankers.
John Burns article NYT.

Do you get a feeling--I have seen this play before.
How about the Cheerleading us into Iraq???

Who lead the way back then???????

9. But, but, but... ...the NY Times is liberal!
Surely they wouldn't report with anything but a bias towards communism and weakening America?
