Bear Stearns has written to investors to say two troubled hedge funds that bet heavily on risky subprime loans now have "very little value."

Bear Stearns in June had said it would provide up to $3.2 billion in financing for its High-Grade Structured Credit Strategies Fund. The investment bank had also said its Enhanced Leverage Fund had taken greater risk in investments backed by subprime mortgages.

"The preliminary estimates show there is effectively no value left for the investors in the Enhanced Leverage Fund and very little value left for the investors in the High-Grade Fund as of June 30, 2007," according to the letter Tuesday. A copy of the letter was obtained by Reuters.

Separately, a source familiar with the funds said the net asset value for the High-Grade Structured Credit Strategies Fund is about 9 cents on the dollar.

The impeachment question has much more relevance to the way they view the office of the Presidency than either of those two questions do. The impeachment question could reveal a lot about how they view the power of the Presidency, it is a question of enormous relevance.

...I think that the last question was supposed to be convivial and Gravel came off as a sourpuss. I'm not saying that Gravel should have crammed sunshine up everyone's collective butt, but he could have tried to be upbeat in the spirit of the question.

This was an opportunity to show that they can lighten up and not be doom and gloom and Gravel missed that, instead going for a serious and decidedly negative angle.

I think the real underlying shame was the incredible lameness of some of the questions. Gravel's serious issues should have had a better forum rather than this yuk-fest.
