URGENT! Need some help ripping these folks a new one
nicely, of course. This comes from a family-oriented, Disney vacation board. All the posters except me and another think this guy is right up there next to Jeebus in his dedication to his "art".

Need help quickly, before the thread gets shut down!

thanks!

1. Ummm...
Did you know your link is only to a news story and I can't find anything about a discussion forum there?

2. Bad link maybe?
All I get is an article about a skywriter who does Bible verses. I don't see any thread.

3. Matthew 6:5
I assume that your message board is discussing this guy? Well, Jesus (that's, y'know, the "big guy") sez:
"And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward." Matthew 6:5 NRSV

This guy making a spectacle of his piousness is in clear violation of Jesus' directives in Matthew. All of his claims that "this isn't about me, it's about God" are bordering on the sin of scrupulousness. Scrupulousness is basically making too big a deal of how holy you are. Being holy is its own reward and you don't need to advertise.

Scrupulousness is something that Catholics are warned about. Evangelicals won't have any idea what it means.

5. get the log out of your own eye...

9. Jesus was speaking to the Sadducees
This "speck of dust" crap is what some Christian's like to pull out when they are caught with their hand in the cookie jar (or, more realistically, their peckers in the prostitute). "Don't worry about the speck in my eye, when you have a log in yours!"

Nice try.

In this passage, Jesus is not speaking to His disciples, He is speaking to the Sadducees. Jesus talks about the "speck of dust" in Luke 6:42, but the context for this quote is established at the beginning of the chapter, Luke 6:1-11. In Luke 6 He is trying to illustrate the idea that one should judge other according to the same standards and one would have others judge them. The Sadducees were quick to judge and condemn other people, but they themselves did not live up to their own rules (think Ted Haggard).

I don't think that this skywriter is following the spirit of the commandments in Matthew 6, and I'm sayin' so. If someone wants to judge me on these same grounds, I accept that.

11. well...it's good that you live up to your own standards...
your attempt to associate me with those who try to deflect criticism of hypocritical behavior is off-base though. Nice to see just how quick you are to judge others...consistency is good, I suppose...

I don't see this guy as trying to draw attention to how righteous he is...but I'm not looking for it, either.

12. What part of SKY WRITING didn't you get?
"I don't see this guy as trying to draw attention to how righteous he is..."

Yeah, writing religious messages in the sky is in no way making a spectacle of himself. What was I thinking? :eyes: "Preach the Gospel to the whole world. Use words only when necessary." -- St. Francis

17. Well...
I'll be the first to admit that a sermon lived can be better than a sermon preached...but just 'cause this guy uses skywriting to put the Gospel up there doesn't mean you can class him among those who like to have people "blow trumpets" to call attention to his "righteousness acts". This guy uses sky writing as one way to get the Gospel message across...

So what?

4. it needs a pound of fuel to climb to 3k feet in a small airplane...
when i was learning how to fly, in 1989, that fact (that it used up a 'pound' of fuel' to climb to working altitude) seemed to make the entire enterprise debased, or something, made it less then decent- if god wanted us to fly, he'd a given us wings. :)
William Blake once said 'a fool shall not enter heaven be he ever so holy'. This freak is a fukking fool, harmless, if you leave out the atmosphere

7. And these folks need a ripping...why?...
The man is practicing freedom of speech...his messages are very innocuous and, I assume, no one else is barred from "posting" counter-messages if they wanted to. I would say his comments fall firmly within the realm of free speech in the public square.
He isn't calling for the overthrow of our government, or the imposition of a theocracy.

Now, if you wann'a take him on for air pollution (as a previous poster alluded to) then that might be legitimate...

13. Have to agree
Unless we have designated the air government owned property I don't know that its anything other than a free speech issue.

Of course the counter to this that if an atheist was up there writing messages there would be a massive reaction.

18. Probably so...
but the Atheist has the same rights of Free Speech as anyone. Yes, no doubt there would be more outcry from those who want a "Christian America"...but those people need to learn that this is a secular nation, and that it operates at its best that way...

10. I saw this asshole while I was at Disney.
Edited on Sun Jul-22-07 10:06 PM by IanDB1
Some kids were really excited by it, and gleefully told their parents, "Mommy! It says 'Trust Jesus!'"

I commented, "I wonder how many poor people they could have fed for the money they wasted on THAT stunt. I think there are more 'Christian' things they can do with their time."

Once again... I should NOT be the only one to "Boo" The Animatronic Bush at Disney World!

Why don't you post that thread to the Disney board?

Notice the news puff piece doesn't mention how much money this costs?

Flying planes isn't cheap.

And this asshole was up there ALL DAY burning fuel.

As long as he is not violating anyone else's rights he can be as stupid as he wants to be.

20. I agree with your idea that the money might be better spent elsewhere, but...
..."And this asshole was up there ALL DAY burning fuel."...

I'm pretty sure you didn't pay for the gas...

Some Christian groups beleive that spreading "the Word" by means of the word (verbal, written, or otherwise) is a signal part of "The Great Commission"...along with actions aimed at alleviating suffering.

And I support the fundamental principle of Freedom of Expression...including your right to disagree with this guy.

It seems to me that we gotta' focus on trying to keep this nation a nation of secular laws and governance...otherwise the "Christian Nation" folks are gonna' destroy our fundamental rights.
