You don't have to be a 'Fundie' ...
... to wish for a peaceful passing for a fellow human being, and be grateful that her suffering is over.

You don't have to be a Christian to be Christ-like in your compassion for others.

And come to think of it, you don't have to be Jewish to love Levy's Jewish Rye Bread - a comment that will be lost on those too young to remember the 60's.

So here's a Jew who's made her opinion of psuedo-Christians known to all, saying Godspeed to Tammy-Faye - who, as things turned out, was the real deal after all.

May your God embrace you as you pass from this life, and may your family find comfort in the memory of your graciousness, and the delightful sound of your laughter.

Peace, my sister.

6. The 'Fundie' reference might be a tad confusing ...
... it is in response to a fellow DUer who just labelled me a 'Fundie' for coming to Tammy-Faye's defence.

I didn't know Jews could also be Christian Fundamentalists, but I have been corrected.

26. Someone actually wrote me in my inbox
to castigate me for saying something positive about her. Weird. I've never had someone do that before.

4. That says it all
Thank you.

I don't want to belabor the point I've made here tonight, but as a gay man, I appreciated her message of love and inclusiveness towards gay and lesbian people. How rare that is for some people who profess to be Christians.

I'm recommending your post.

12. This ol' pagan knows a good Christian when he sees one.
Tammy Faye was a good Christian. She really "got" the love part of it. And the love part is the part that is worth keeping.

Thank you, Nance. Once again you said it over there so I don't have to say it over here.

14. It's not who you were. It's who you are.
It's not what was. It's what is.

And by those realities, everything that changes is new.

This is why we can fault Democrats who stop embracing Democratic values. And why people like Senator Byrd can be seen as good people, even though his past was hateful.

This is so obvious, but so often overruled by our emotions and fears. Maybe it's best to say, don't judge but just observe.

21. "...you don't have to be Jewish to love Levy's Jewish Rye Bread" -- Yes! Yes! I remember!
My favorite "head shop" (remember THOSE?) back in the day had various versions of Levy's Rye Bread posters all over the place -- they were hilarious!

Anyway, as to Tammy Faye -- she first won me over from her appearance on the Drew Carey Show as Mimi's mother. I figured that anyone willing to poke fun at their own persona probably had a good heart. Real assholes and self-serious ideologues are incapable of such self-deprecating humor, and her comedy work clearly indicated to me that she was neither. And that was way before I knew anything about her work for HIV/AIDS and the gay community.

I sincerely wish her a good journey, and hold no animus against her. After all, she initially demonstrated her good judgement by divorcing that asshole Jim Bakker, and went on to demonstrate some true "Christian" (speaking as a non-Christian) values in her subsequent work.

I wholeheartedly join you in wishing her peace.

22. Thank you Nance that was beautiful
I grew up in Rochester, Minnesota, home of the federal prison which held Jim Baker. Tammy Faye used to come and visit Jim when he was in prison, and one day when I was young my family took me out for pizza to celebrate my birthday. Halfway through our lunch Tammy Faye came and sat down at the table right across from ours. She was the first celebrity I ever encountered in real life and I still remember that day despite how many years have passed.

This past year I heard her son on the radio and it was one of the most enlightening interviews I have ever heard, she raised a truly remarkable kid and while she may have had some big issues in her past she seemed to have come around later in life and I could really respect her as a truly decent person.

May she rest in peace.

29. Very good.
I really do not know enough about this person to say anything about what type of person she was. But I would not wish cancer on even my worst "enemy." I have a friend, who practices a form of carpentry that holds that it is best to have compassion for everyone, even those who you believe are your enemy at any given time.

30. And here's a Buddhist
Who thinks the world would be a much better place if "Christians" actually practiced the example set by Jesus.

It sounds to me as if Tammy-Faye finally got it right. And even if she didn't, no one deserves to suffer like that.
