Two good-sized quakes in Brazil and Argentina
6.1 and 6.2, respectively. Haven't heard anything on the news so I'm hoping our neighbors to the south are all okay. We hear so little here of anything south of the US-Mexican border it's really shameful.

Those are pretty big ones, but quakes are not all that rare in Argentina, at least.. Brazil..I'm not sure..

When we lived in Panama we had small ones almost every day..(all the cupboards had slide latches on them, so everything wouldn't come tumbling out)

5. Argentina
Mendoza, Argentina (near the Andes and the Chilean border) is particularly prone to earthquakes.

7. quakes
from http://gosouthamerica.about.com/b/a/001187.htm
Earthquakes in Chile, Argentina and Brazil
An earthquake at 1331 GMT struck the Chilean area of Norte Chico, damaging structures and causing panic. Rated at 6.0 on the Mercali scale (1-10), the quake was felt in Coquimbo, La Serena, and as a 4.0 tremor in Santiago. Across the Andes, at the same time, a 5.0 earthquake shook the provinces of San Juan and Mendoza, and was felt in Buenos Aires, an area not usually subject to tremors. Earlier, at 0619 GMT, a 7.0 earthquake shook an unpopulated area of the Brazilian Amazon. Experts wonder if the Brazilian earthquake, a rarity, might have triggered the others. There are no reports of major injuries or damage, but residents of Norte Chico remember the 1997 Ovalle earthquake that killed 12, left hundreds injured and caused major damage. For more details, read Fuertes sismos sacuden Chile, Argentina y Brasil in Spanish.

8. Here we go again
My oldest son flew into the airport that had the big plane crash 2 days before that crash. I found out later that afternoon where he was, phew. Today he arrived in Argentina. Thankfully I just looked this up and they felt it in Buenos Aires but nothing happened there. I'll bet he has a story or two for us when he gets home.

My youngest was close to the steam pipe that blew in NYC. He gets home tomorrow.

Sometimes being a parent is not a lot of fun!

I did read that only one had died so far in Argentina so hopefully that will be the extent of it.
