When they take a break on Stern's show, they often play crank phone calls, clips of newscasters making errors during a broadcast, & yesterday they played a clip from Jesus Camp....Oh my God, what lunatics....This woman was going off about Harry Potter, basically pontificating that he'd have been put to death "back in the day" as a sorcerer...Are you fucking kidding me!.....I could not watch that entire film, I most certainly would throw something thru the TV, :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

On a related note, I rented a DVD not too long ago that though it angered me, it was a powerful & worthwhile film to see...It was called "The Magdalene Sisters", which dealt with the abusive asylums run by sadastic nuns in Irleand which existed from about the 1940's? - thru the late 1990's...

Here's a comment from a viewer about that movie:

"This film will move you that is for sure. It is amazing to think such atrocities went on in the name of God. Well I guess it isn't really but this film lets you experience the single mindedness and hypocrisies of people who hold such fanatical beliefs. The film takes you on a journey through the eyes of helpless young women. These women are victims of the church and all its cruelty. We see how their spirits are affected by such unjust behavior. You will feel and cry along with them. You will hope along with them. It is amazing that anyone in these kind of circumstances could ever find any hope.

Peter Mullan had done a superb job at writing and directing. He even plays a small part in the film.

The script is very well structured. It builds it dramatic tension nicely. The performances all round are very strong.

I am sure you will enjoy this outstanding drama.

1. The Magdalene Laundries began, of course, with a noble ideal
and that was to rescue women who had worked as prostitutes and gotten sick, pregnant or too old for the job. The laundries were only one of such "female asylums;" other orders had other hard labor schemes for the women. Most of them began in the 1800s.

They soon devolved into a dumping ground for problem daughters, girls who'd been impregnated by anyone from boyfriends to fathers to the parish priest. Sometimes girls were sent there because they were attracting too much attention from men, whether or not it was returned.

The sadism occurred because of a desire to keep order, to force religiosity where it didn't exist, and because these girls had been written off by their families and now belonged to the nuns as property.

The last one closed in 1996. They existed for far too long.

2. I got about 1/2-way through that movie before I had to turn it off.
I can't watch people turn the words of Jesus Christ into a weapon.

3. Merely reading about the way these women were treated makes me so physically ill I can't even think
of watching the film. I'm sure it's very well done and I just hope people don't assume such abuse ended when the laundries closed.
