DANGER OF FIRE! If you own a Maytag or Jenn-Air dishwasher, please read about an IMPORTANT RECALL!
Edited on Mon Feb-05-07 11:48 PM by Radio_Lady
Maytag has recalled 2.3 million dishwashers sold at department and appliance stores and by homebuilders nationwide from July 1997 through June 2001 for between $370 and $800.

A neighbor was kind enough to send us this information, and our dishwasher's model and serial number are involved. We have a couple of options to repair or replace it. We've been warned NOT TO USE IT.

Please send this link to anyone you know who has a Maytag or Jenn-Air dishwasher. The model and serial number are on the inside front door frame. See below for more information, and go to this website:

https://repair.maytag.com/repair/dishwasher.jsp?siteCd=MT_EN_US

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following

Name of Product: Maytag® and Jenn-Air® brand dishwashers
Units: About 2.3 million
Manufacturer: Maytag Corp., of Newton, Iowa
Hazard: Liquid rinse-aid can leak from its dispenser and come into contact with the dishwasher's internal wiring which can short-circuit and ignite, posing a fire hazard.
Incidents/Injuries: Maytag has received 135 reports of dishwasher fires, resulting in product and/or property damage. Four injuries have been reported, including three reports of smoke inhalation and one serious hand laceration when operating a fire extinguisher to put out a fire in the dishwasher.
Description: The recall involves Maytag® and Jenn-Air® under counter or portable plastic tub dishwashers. The dishwashers have black, white, almond, bisque and stainless steel front panels. The following model and serial numbers are printed on a label located on the dishwasher's plastic frame on top of or to the left of the door opening. Consumers should contact Maytag to determine if their dishwasher is included in this recall.

2. Thanks, Madmax. There are 2.3 million of these dishwashers affected.
I think there might be some Democrats among those numbers!

I guess we're going to buy a dishwasher (and get a rebate) this week. Hot dog!

Thanks for your post.

3. Mine is a year earlier but if they have the same detergent dispenser
it isn't the rinse agent leaking that will be a problem - it is a little $3 gasket that goes on the latch for the dispenser - it gets old and leaks and can ruin a whole bunch of stuff inside the door - replace it after about 5 years and it should be alright.

5. Interesting. The company is offering a company repair or $75 rebate towards a new one.
I must admit that the rinse agent feature has never worked properly on my machine. I put some Jet Dry in there maybe a year ago, and it still has the same "dipstick" blue color. I just gave up on it completely, until tonight.

Thanks for the information. I'll look into it more tomorrow.

11. in mine, the little gasket leaked and ruined the motor
for the rinse-agent dispenser - I don't know why but it is called a "wax motor" - it rusted out and quit working too. I pretty much rebuilt all the stuff in the door right before christmas...it isn't hard if you are into that kind of thing - got some good info (and parts) from a website called repairclinic.com

I'd take the repair they are offering and ask them to check that gasket while they have the door taken apart.

12. We're actually thinking about replacing this dishwasher, due to an accidental fall on the door.
We were getting ready to fly to Alaska, straightening up the kitchen and getting ready to run the dishwasher, which was open to receive our dishes.

I turned around and tripped on the edge of the open door. I then lost my balance, and fell right on the dishwasher door, which would not close. Luckily, I was not hurt because the door stopped my fall to the floor. After our vacation, my electrical engineer husband managed to twist the misshapen door and get the dishwasher to run again.
This really adds to my concern.

Also, the rubbery finish is coming off the tines on the lower shelf. Maytag sent me some of the liquid in a bottle, but I painted the stuff on and it only lasted for a few months.

So, we'll probably go out looking for a new dishwasher and get their $75.00 rebate. Thanks for posting.

8. Kick- Appliance electrical fires are a serious hazard.
I do building maintenance. Anyway I've seen several appliance fires where the unit just sat there and burned and the breaker didn't pop. Because these units are under counters where flammable mystery residues (bug poop, grease condensate) might reside you could have a big fire before the smoke detector goes off.

14. Nolabels, glad you checked it out. Do you plan to repair or replace yours?
Our model is 9 or 10 years old. It was installed by the builder of our home, and we occupied it in August 1998.

I think we're going to comparison-shop the four brands this weekend.

20. Fix it myself, that three dollar gasket in the door panel should be easy
So far we have got good mileage out of this one. The prior Kenmore dishwasher we had only lasted three years, the bottom seal gasket leaked then corroded and shorted out the motor.

We are at various stages of renovating the home, maybe when we get to kitchen we get one that is built to last a little longer.

Doesn't sound like a very comfortable situation. I am so sorry to hear about it.

29. I did it online. Follow this link and, after a few questions....
it will take you to a form where you can get your rebate/voucher. I didn't try the "repair option" branch, so I don't know if you can arrange a home visit online.

28. Additional news from wire services today. (BTW, Maytag was sold to Whirlpool in March 2006.)
2.3 Million Maytag Dishwashers Recalled
February 6, 2007

The recall of 2.3 million Maytag dishwashers, which could catch on fire, generated so many calls to the company that it could not handle the volume, a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission spokesman said.

Faulty wiring in certain Maytag and Jenn-Air brand dishwashers led to a voluntary recall of the machines last week. Dishwashers are blamed for causing 135 fires and four injuries.

Affected dishwashers were sold at department and appliances stores between July 1997 and June 2001 and sold at prices between $370 and $800.

Consumers, who were told to immediately unplug the machines and call Maytag to arrange for an in-home repair, were met with messages to call back later.

"We are working very closely with Maytag to address some operational issues that the company is experiencing," said Scott Wolfson, a spokesman for the Consumer Product Safety Commission, a federal agency with responsibility for protecting the public from product that can cause injury or death. "It's a positive sign that the company is receiving so many calls because we want consumers to be responsive to the announcement, but just as importantly, we want that remedy to be available to the consumers."

Maytag, once the nation's third-largest appliance maker, was bought by Whirlpool Corp. on March 31, 2006, in a deal valued at $2.6 billion.
