Police: City Official, Husband Face Charges For 'Exorcism' On Daughter
Police: City Official, Husband Face Charges For 'Exorcism' On Daughter
Couple Have Not Been Arrested

An Edgewater city councilwoman and her husband face criminal charges after their daughter accused them of battering her during an effort to exorcise "the demons out of her," according to police.

Debra and Daniel Rogers had complaint affidavits for misdemeanor battery and felony false imprisonment filed against them with the state attorney's office on Thursday. They have not been arrested.

The Volusia County State Attorneys Office confirmed to Local 6 News that it had received a complaint against the Rogers involving false imprisonment and domestic battery claims. Officials said the investigation is "active."

The allegations stem from a June 27 incident at the family's home on S. Riverside Drive. Police said the couple physically restrained their 18-year-old daughter, Danielle, against her will while drenching her with olive oil.

The Rogers deny the allegations.

Rogers was elected to the Edgewater City Council in November of 2005 to a four-year term.

3. Maybe...
...they were "virgin" exorcists, and this was their first time
trying to rid a teenager of a demon.

Either that or they mixed up their "Exorcism For Dummies" handbook
with their "30 Minute Italian Dishes" cookbook.

Who knew?

8. Father accused cops of wanting to have sex with daughter, accused of dragging her out of shower
to berate her over diary entries. Daddy Dearest also is accused by the daughter of badgering her into confessing sins like exactly how she kissed and touched her boyfriend. Oh and they managed to rip off her shirt and bra during the exorcism.

Call me nuts but the man sounds like a freaking pervert.

Responding officers said they found Danielle Rogers "out of control" and unable to rationalize. Her father was holding his daughter's arms behind her back. Officers put her in restraints until she calmed down. She was then voluntarily taken to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach for a mental-health evaluation and released shortly afterward.

The same night, hospital officials contacted police, saying the young woman was bruised and wanted to file assault charges against her father, Daniel Rogers.

Danielle Rogers told Brady during the interview such incidents went back several years, including her father dragging her by the hair and shoving his fist into her mouth to stop her from crying. She said he had also pulled her nude from the shower to read her excerpts of her diary he disliked.

The father also told Brady that when Danielle returned home from hanging out with a boy, her father "would sit her down and he would have her graphically 'confess' her sins as to exactly where they touched each other and kissed each other."

Danielle Rogers' shirt and bra were partially torn off and she was covered in olive oil after the incident, which took place June 27 about 8 p.m.

The incident unfolded after the 18-year-old woman swore at her twin sister Christina, and her father Daniel threatened to shoot one of Danielle's friends.

"We need to get the demons out of her," Daniel, 47, said to his wife, Debra Rogers, 46, councilwoman in the Volusia county city. "Go get the oil," he said to Christina, the papers claim.

9. Debra Rogers also left 'strange' notes, e-mails and voice mails with biblical phrases

Edgewater council member Harriet Rhodes said Debra Rogers, an accountant, is known as religiously zealous and used to leave religious tracts for a former city manager. Rhodes said Rogers is entitled to her beliefs, but if the reports are substantiated, she went too far.

"I think it should be investigated, and if it's true, maybe they all need some family counseling," Rhodes said.

The former manager, Ken Hooper, said Debra Rogers also left notes, e-mails and voice mails with biblical phrases, and he considered that "strange."

"A lot of people I've noticed turn to their religious faith when there are family problems and that's probably what they're doing," Vincenzi (edgewater vice mayor) said.
