WASHINGTON — The U.S. Navy said Tuesday that it was sending the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf in order to maintain two carriers in the region amid growing tensions with Iran over its alleged support of Iraqi insurgents.

'Time running out for Iran strike'
Predicting that sanctions will ultimately fail to stop Teheran's nuclear program, Brig.-Gen. (res.) Yossi Kuperwasser, former head of Military Intelligence's Research Division, told The Jerusalem Post on Monday that time to launch an effective military strike against Iran's nuclear installations was running out.

Both sides raising tensions
WASHINGTON -- Well-informed sources in Washington fear a confrontation between Syria and Israel may happen this summer. The sources say that Syrian intelligence is abuzz with activity reports of an imminent Israeli attack across the Golan Heights, while others believe it is Syria that is gearing up for war.
Is Israel helping George Bush drum up another war?—Caro

BAGHDAD, Iraq — A barrage of up to 35 missiles and mortars slammed into the fortified Green Zone late Tuesday afternoon, in what U.S. and Iraqi officials say is the largest such assault to date on the safest place in Baghdad.

LORENZAGO DI CADORE, Italy - Pope Benedict XVI reasserted the primacy of the Roman Catholic Church, approving a document released Tuesday that says other Christian communities are either defective or not true churches and Catholicism provides the only true path to salvation.
I’m reminded of the Eddie Murphy bit where he pretends to be a child teasing another child who got no ice cream. “You’re going to hay-yul. You’re going to hay-yul.”—Caro

The Nation
Bush again links Iraq violence to 9/11
WASHINGTON — Struggling to stem growing opposition to his Iraq policy even among Republicans, President Bush contended anew Tuesday that the perpetrators of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the United States are the same as al Qaida in Iraq, a violent Iraqi insurgent group that didn't exist until after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.
Woo hoo, McClatchy!—Caro

Officials worry of summer terror attack
WASHINGTON - U.S. counterterror officials are warning of an increased risk of an attack this summer, given al-Qaida's apparent interest in summertime strikes and increased al-Qaida training in the Afghan-Pakistani border region.
Be afraid, America, be very afraid of Republicans wanting to scare you into loving George Bush.—Caro

Bush on Health Care: It’s All Your Fault
Bush spoke in Ohio (Tuesday) and blames YOU for lawsuits on doctors, not choosing the correct health plan, being in poor health…it goes on and on. His new talking point is the “Federalization of health care.” The medical industry is freaking since Moore’s movie just came out. They need you dumbed down and Bush tries to do that for them.

U.S. Senate panel moves to cut off funding for Cheney in flap with Dems over executive order
A Senate appropriations panel chaired by Democratic Sen. Richard Durbin refused to fund $4.8 million in the vice president's budget until Cheney's office complies with parts of an executive order governing its handling of classified information.
Woo hoo, Senator Durbin!—Caro

Gonzales Was Told of FBI Violations
As he sought to renew the USA Patriot Act two years ago, Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales assured lawmakers that the FBI had not abused its potent new terrorism-fighting powers. "There has not been one verified case of civil liberties abuse," Gonzales told senators on April 27, 2005. Six days earlier, the FBI sent Gonzales a copy of a report that said its agents had obtained personal information that they were not entitled to have. It was one of at least half a dozen reports of legal or procedural violations that Gonzales received in the three months before he made his statement to the Senate intelligence committee, according to internal FBI documents released under the Freedom of Information Act.

Former Bush adviser to say no to Senate
WASHINGTON - President Bush's former political director says she intends to follow his directive and not answer questions about her role in the administration's firing of federal prosecutors — unless a court directs her to defy her former boss.

Former Surgeon General Says His Views Were Censored
July 10 (Bloomberg) -- The most recent U.S. surgeon general said President George W. Bush's administration barred him from speaking out on stem-cell research, sex education and other issues when science didn't support Bush's political views.

Vitter Flashback: Clinton should resign.
Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) first got his start in Congress after replacing former Rep. Bob Livingston (R-LA), who “abruptly resigned after disclosures of numerous affairs” in 1998. At the time, Vitter argued that an extramarital affair was grounds for resignation: “I think Livingston’s stepping down makes a very powerful argument that Clinton should resign as well and move beyond this mess,” he said. (Atlanta Journal and Constitution, 12/20/98)

I will be a guest today on the Tony Trupiano Show, at 1:00 PM ET. Listen to Tony’s show every day between noon and 3:00 PM ET on listener supported RadioPower.org.

Flynt Gets Scoop
A call from Hustler magazine may have prompted Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) to expose his past with an escort service run by the so-called D.C. Madam, ABC News reports. Vitter issued a statement last night confirming that he had used the now-defunct service… Last month, Flynt offered awards for sex scandal information.

Accurate Health Care Numbers: Michael Moore 1, CNN 0
CNN decided to have its health care expert, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, go after Michael Moore's new movie Sicko. One of the facts that he claimed the movie got wrong was its assertion that health care spending in the United States is $7,000 per person. Dr. Gupta said it was only $6,000. Well, this is an easy one. We go to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services National Health Care Expenditure projections and find on Table 1, line 3, that projected per capita health care expenditure for 2007 is $7,498.

The Political Brain
Just published: The Political Brain: The Role of Emotion in Deciding the Fate of the Nation by Drew Westen, who essentially argues that passion, not logic, decides elections. Instead of concentrating on issues, facts and policies, politicians should instead focus on feelings. The New York Times quotes none other than Bill Clinton praising the book: "To say I think it’s a very important book is an understatement."
Actually, Prof. Westen argues that we should concentrate on BOTH feelings AND issues. Both are important. But this slant on the book will give right wingers ammunition for ridicule of liberals and Democrats. I’ve already heard from one of my crazies on this.—Caro

Hannity continued to bash carbon offsets -- no mention of Murdoch's purported plans to use them
This is only the latest example of Hannity attacking carbon offsets and, in particular, former Vice President Al Gore's reported use of them. However, Hannity has yet to address News Corp. chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch's pledge to take steps -- including the use of carbon offsets -- "to be carbon neutral, across all our businesses" -- which includes Fox News -- "by 2010."

'Chicago Sun-Times' Looks to Redefine Itself as 'Liberal, Working-Class' Paper
The tabloid that shifted toward political conservatism under the brief ownership of Rupert Murdoch more than two decades ago now says that it is "rethinking our stance on several issues, including the most pressing issue facing Americans today: Bush's war in Iraq."
That’s what it used to be, the working man’s newspaper. Before there were so many working women.—Caro
Burkle, Web exec may unite on Dow bid
Supermarket billionaire Ron Burkle and Web entrepreneur Brad Greenspan, who had separately proposed ways that Wall Street Journal publisher Dow Jones & Co. could avoid a takeover by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., might cobble together an alternative bid for Dow Jones.

Technology & Science
Microsoft cultures creativity in unique lab
Two dozen designers, engineers and strategists toil in an unusual research lab on the Microsoft campus. Awkwardly dubbed the Mobile and Embedded Devices Experience design center, or MEDX, it is where Microsoft plots strategies to sell souped-up cellphones that act a lot like PCs.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Google Inc. will introduce on Wednesday a new feature that lets users create personalized maps which plot the locations of everything from cheap gas locally to the latest earthquakes worldwide.

Long Live New Yorkers!
A new study finds that Empire State residents are extending their life expectancy faster than denizens of other states. What gives?

No Evidence Tomatoes, Lycopene Cut Cancer: FDA
TUESDAY, July 10 (HealthDay News) -- There's little hard evidence that a diet rich in tomatoes and the tomato antioxidant lycopene can ward off cancer, according to research from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Maybe. Just remember that this administration forces its scientists to report findings that are beneficial to industry.—Caro

Ethiopia unveils new find of ancient fossils
ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Ethiopian scientists said on Tuesday they have discovered hominid fossil fragments dating from between 3.5 million and 3.8 million years ago in what could fill a crucial gap in the understanding of human evolution.

Astronomers spot most far-away galaxies
The galaxies are seen as they existed just 500 million years after the birth of the universe. Their light, traversing the cosmos for more than 13 billion years, was seen only because it was distorted in a natural "gravitational lens" created by the gravity-bending mass of a nearer cluster of galaxies.

Environment
Sheeps Being Trained to Weed Vineyards
HOPLAND, Calif. (AP) - Call them mutton mowers. University researchers are training sheep to clean up vineyard weeds but stay off the grapes. Enthusiastic and unpicky eaters, sheep are already being used in some vineyards as a green alternative to tractors.
The Fermilab uses buffalo as its weed eaters. There’s a virtual tour. I don’t know if it includes pictures of the buffalo.—Caro

Cows that burp less seen helping in climate fight
LONDON (Reuters) - Manners aside, getting cows to burp less can help reduce global warming.
Less burping. Yeah, that’ll do it.—Caro
