Democrats.com Poll Finds Libby Commutation Boosted Support for Impeachment
Submitted by davidswanson on Tue, 2007-07-10 02:35. Impeachment

www.democrats.com

The commutation of Scooter Libby's prison sentence backfired politically on Bush and Cheney and greatly increased support for impeachment, according to a Democrats.com telephone poll of 1,014 adults conducted by ICR.

Before the commutation on July 2, Americans 34% of Americans supported impeachment hearings for Bush, while 55% opposed. After the commutation, support increased to 43% and opposition dropped to 50% - a net increase in 14% for impeachment hearings.

The political consequences were even worse for Cheney, who was Scooter Libby's boss. Before the commutation, 33% of Americans supported impeachment hearings for Cheney, while 51% opposed. After the commutation, support increased to 45% and opposition dropped to 44% - a net increase in 19% for impeachment hearings.

According to Democrats.com president Bob Fertik, "Republicans like Bill Kristol who celebrated Bush's 'extremely clever Machiavellian move' were utterly wrong about public opinion, just as they have been wrong about everything from Iraq to Social Security to Terry Schiavo. The American people recognize a coverup when they see one, and they understand that Libby's sentence was commuted to stop him from testifying against Cheney and Bush."

1. Nothing "backfired" on Bush and Cheney.
Nothing at all...it is working out perfectly for the two men who are not running for any political office. All they are interested in is keeping their lying asses out of jail, or at least heading up the alphabetical list of presidents (and veeps) who've been impeached. They're getting everything they want...Scooter will obviously keep his mouth shut, and when BushCo forces this to the SCOTUS, their Federalist water carriers Roberts and Alito will find for the Unitary Executive across the board, and a very dangerous new precedent will be set.

Not that Roberts and Alito actually respect precedents, as they falsely testified before the Senate. So maybe they won't mind when another SCOTUS ignores their precedent some day and restores sanity to our system of government.

But no one should shed a tear for poor Messrs. Bush and Cheney. They know they have nothing to worry about.

2. Repukes just don't get it. I think they thought the commutation
of Libby was going to be met by cheers and beers. They are clueless and truly have no understanding of the people. Remember Karl bragging at election time that "I have the numbers." It's that kind of mindset that makes these people such losers. The '08 election is ours to lose, they have nothing....

3. I keep thinking about what Buchanan said; Americans aren't paying
attention and don't much care. Well, Pat, you might just be wrong about that!

4. The second we can get convictions on them
I say go for it. I don't want either of those pricks to be able to weasel out of an impeachment because we can't get enough Senators to covict them. It would be a beautiful sight to see the bushbot SC judge Roberts read the verdict.
