Bush hit the wall today on immigration reform with a major defeat in the Senate. According to the AP, “The bill that would have given a path to U.S. citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants fell 14 votes short of the 60 needed in the 100-member Senate to advance toward a final vote. Bush has sought an overhaul of U.S. immigration laws for years and this bill may have been his last chance for a significant domestic legislative victory before leaving office when his second term ends in a year and a half.”

Poor Bush, can’t make corporate indentured servants out of poor, third-world workers. And it looks like slavery isn’t going to make a come-back. But hey, with this Supreme Court we now have you never know . . . .

Speaking of, didn’t you know this would happen? Weren’t you warned? In its last day of full session the Supreme Court today struck a fatal blow against the “Brown v. Board of Education,” ruling from 1954, effectively ending voluntary racial integration plans in public schools.

"The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race," Chief Justice John G. Roberts wrote for the majority in an opinion that addressed integration plans in public schools in Louisville, Ky., and Seattle.

In dissent, Justice John Paul Stevens said "there is a cruel irony in The Chief Justice's reliance on our decision in Brown v. Board of Education... The Chief Justice rewrites the history of one of this Court's most important decisions." Justice Stevens, who has served on the Supreme Court longer than any other current justice, concluded his dissent, writing, "It is my firm conviction that no Member of the Court that I joined in 1975 would have agreed with today's decision."

Stevens was joined by Justices David Souter, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer.
Look for Roe v. Wade to be reversed before the end of Bush’s term. It’s all part of the so far successful master neocon plan to dominate women, minorities, oil wealth, poor people, and everyone else that doesn’t serve their corporate agenda.

Oldest peed on the floor a few hours ago. He had to go timeout for awhile. He broke a dvd earlier today, so I'm keeping two of the big pieces to show him "broken" the next time he asks for the movie.

My left shoulder aches, but I took some ibuprofen earlier, and I have a glass of merlot from somewhere in South America (Argentina?) and some garlic bread.

Last month Mr. catnapper and I spent 5 days in NO. We've been there many times and didn't want to go down when we'd be in the way. But there comes a time when (like after the SF earthquake in '89) they're hurting as a tour-based city.

While journalists and presidential historians had long noted Bush's deep faith and Cheney's powerful influence in the White House, few had drawn a direct correlation between the two until Tuesday, when transcripts of meetings that took place in March and April of 2002 became available.

In a transcript of an intercom exchange recorded in March 2002, a voice positively identified as the vice president's identifies himself as "the Lord thy God" and promotes the invasion of Iraq, as well as the use of torture in prisoner interrogations.

A close examination of Bush's public statements and Secret Service time logs tracking the vice president reveals a consistent pattern, one which links Bush's belief that he had received word from God with Cheney's use of the White House's telephone-based intercom system. (snip)

That was taken in front of the Arc de Triomphe in December. Mr. smokey went to London for 6 weeks on business. I joined him for the last 2 1/2 weeks of the trip and spent a weekend in Paris.

On our last day in Paris we saw teensy little heads peeping over the top of the arch, and we were so pissed that we didn't know we could climb to the top.

We got some great pictures from there. Although it's damned hard to take a bad picture in Paris, being there is like walking around in a postcard.

207. We made it to the top of La Tour Eiffel

but the first part was really scary. We boarded the ground-level elevator, and they crammed in so many people that the first passengers (like US) were crushed against the wall and couldn't breathe. When we got to the first level and weren't dead, we headed for the next. Did you know that once you're at the top and look down at the flagpoles, you can see the sway of the monument? Maybe it's corny, but I love landmarks!
